Wow. I will preface this review by saying I have been to many competitors in this industry (Pebble Beach, Broadmoor, Kiawah, etc) and this would be a ONE star but the group of guys made it memorable.
First, the check in area is ill-designed for the constant in and out of golf travelers. Lobby is tiny and non-existent and everyday they turn over to the next group of suckers to help them empty their wallets. The nicest feature of the hotel is the public bathroom, although only having two isn't always enough. The bathroom showers in the guest rooms have nice shower heads. The living room configurations don't work for a group of 8. The breakfast was solid. The outdoor space was pointless. No pool? No Hot tub? No gym?
Overall, the staff was miserable and nasty. They try and nickel and dime for every single thing, not only at the INN, but also at the golf courses. You can't stock the room with some waters and snacks? We spent $30,000 and have to walk to the tiny snack section to spend $10 for a water? They messed up scheduling transportation, never apologized. The rooms are fine, but the beds should be at least a size bigger, my 5 year old son saw it on facetime and asked where the rest of the bed was.
Golf: The reason we came. We played all four courses. The caddy experience was very hit or miss from some great guys that made the trip to some lumps that didn't even help look for balls. We had the dye package but definitely not worth it. The condition at blackwolf run , specifically meadows greens, was atrocious. How does a course charge those rates and every green had more ball marks than the last. The river course was better conditioned and a fun course, but nothing crazy. The Irish course was fun but felt over the top fake at points. The ranger telling us to speed up as we literally sat on the tee waiting to tee off because there was a group in front of us playing slow as hell was interesting. The straights, well that is the place to be. Can't say much negative about that course or the experience there! We had a magical day there. We also had a blast playing the par 3 course but the second time the ranger asked how I wanted to pay for using the hickory rentals. I was confused and he informed me it was $10 to use the hickory clubs. For real? Luckily I had a roll of quarters but every turn felt like being at Disney world and mickey mouse shaking your pockets out. Also they lost my one of a kind putter head-cover. What do I do now?
Food on site was all average at best. I ate nothing at the restaurants that would be anything special. I could recommend no places to eat. They love telling you about "complimentary" hot dogs/brats and we even had to fight with them to get those one day. Crazy! Maybe this was Herb Kohler's vision?
For the money spent, I could never recommend anyone go there for more than a night and to play the straights and one more course and move on with your travels! For my birthday they sent a 6 pack to our room, I don't drink.... but thanks for the generic mass produced card. They made everyone feel like just a number and the goal of squeezing dollars was...
Read moreWe had an unpleasant start that tainted the stay here, with cold and borderline rude front desk staff who handled the room check in. We get to our room to discover it’s not what we booked, we booked a room over looking the water. We get to our room overlooking a not scenic parking lot. My husband goes down and asks to be moved and the receptionist argued we were in a nicer room than we booked. We insisted on getting a room with a view like we asked so she told us to bring our stuff back down to the lobby (rude - thanks for making me lug it up there on their error to be rudely told to bring down) treated us like an inconvenience, having us awkwardly standing in the lobby while we are in people’s way because there no place to sit while we wait to hear about our new room. When we got to our new room, it was the same as what we were in, but with a view… so to tell us the wrong room she placed us in originally was an upgrade was a lie. The rooms were ok - personally not a fan of dingy carpet, it’s not sanitary, like a sponge soaking up the oils of other people feet. The bed was among the most uncomfortable I’ve slept in - hard spring mattress with not so much as a padded topper. I really hoped for the price a relaxing bed would be my minimum expectation. The bathrooms were nice, tho not cleanliest - black mold on the sink border. Also... I get the eco conscious aspect of not using single use toiletries, but it risks tampering and unsanitary conditions. I also think glass cups in the room is disgusting - I though COVID killed that but apparently not. The tv is small and looks like it’s from 2008, but the surround sound is a cool touch. No usb outlets other than on one side of the bed with a little alarm clock you could plug into. The room decor was mediocre, not luxury feeling at all… not a room I would want to spend any time relaxing in. Hilariously the only thing I was impressed with was the lobby restrooms - they feature a $5000 Kohler digital bidet toilet. We didn’t see any room service menu, breakfast is continental. I’ve stayed in Marriotts nicer than this hotel, but for the price, I stayed in the most luxurious and accommodating hotel, Vice Roy, this time last year for the same price as this mediocre over priced stay. This was… just a (uncomfortable) place to sleep. The only benefit is it’s attached to a strip of shops and restaurants, which is convenient (tho no coffee shops). Overall, I won’t be returning and will be warning friends and family to spare themselves the mediocre over priced experience of...
