I am an active Marriott Bonvoy member and typically choose Marriott when traveling. I came from CA for this trip so my expectation was to see the same Marriott quality that I've seen in the past. However, its my understanding that Townplace Suites is not one of the most luxury brands of Marriott -- and unfortunately this rang true during this vacation. At first impression, everything was great. Our flight was early and Michael was able to accommodate us with a room as early as 11am. Parking was easy and the hallways were clean, but when we entered our room there was an very stuffy and musty smell - almost as if the carpet was shampooed recently. I quickly realized that there was no central air at all in this room (129). I didn't see any vents anywhere in the room. All we had was the window, which I guessed had not been opened in awhile, hence the smell. We stayed for 7 days and while we wanted to open the window to air out the room, the cold weather didn't always permit us to do so. Plus we have 2 small children who we were trying to stop from catching colds, and the stuffy room didn't help that either. We were there for my cousin's wedding so there were several of us at the hotel. I soon realized that my mom's room (113) was a little more updated than ours. Same layout, however she had an actual thermostat on the wall while we could only use the buttons on the window unit. She also had a lightbulb out and stains on her couch, but I'll let her share her feedback on that. Speaking of stains, our curtains in 129 were full of them. Luckily I am somewhat of a germiphobe so I always bring Lysol wipes, in which I heavily used as soon as we arrived. However to be there for a week I didn't even feel comfortable enough to let my family walk barefoot in the room. At some point I had to tell myself to just stop looking around and wiping things down because I was just finding more and more filth. I'll wrap up by saying that even through all of this, the staff seemed very friendly. I never had an issue with them and they were very accommodating when they could be. The benefits of this hotel for my family was that we had a kitchen and laundry on site. Both very necessary with small children. However if I visited this area again, unfortunately I would probably stay at the Extended Stay...

I am writing this review not just as a witness to a deeply disturbing situation—but as someone who believes it’s our duty to speak up when others are dehumanized.
While staying at this hotel, my friend—who booked her room directly through the Marriott website—personally witnessed a horrifying incident: a young Black mother and her children were ejected from the property by a staff member named Ralph Dupree. There was no altercation, no violation, no disturbance—just racially motivated hostility. The woman and her children were removed without cause, and it was painfully clear it was because of the color of their skin.
But the discrimination didn’t end there.
The same employee then began aggressively targeting my friend, making a scene about the fact that she had a cat with her, despite having already paid in full for a pet-friendly stay. Instead of following policy or providing support, Ralph tried to illegally raise her rate, causing her extreme stress.
And tragically, during this turmoil, her cat went into labor. One of the kittens became stuck and required emergency surgery. My friend was mistreated, overcharged, emotionally harassed, and forced to manage a medical emergency for her pet—all while witnessing another family of color be publicly humiliated and thrown out.
This is not hospitality. This is abuse of power, racial discrimination, and gross misconduct under the Marriott name.
I overheard false, defamatory comments being made about guests—statements that were not only unprofessional but rooted in bigotry. It’s clear this location has no respect for its guests, especially those who are people of color or in vulnerable positions.
Marriott must be held accountable.
Until there is a full investigation, disciplinary action, and public acknowledgment of the wrong done here, I strongly urge all travelers—especially minority families—not to stay at this location.
Dignity should come with your room key. At this...
Read moreWe'd stayed in this property many times years ago and remembered the staff and the manager were all friendly, nice and professional. We remembered the rooms were clean. I spoke with the manager when I made the reservation this time and he's super nice, professional and helpful. Not sure if it's the same manager in this property from long time ago but that was about what we remembered from the past stays. That's why we decided to stay with them again. This time when we checked in, the room looked OK and then we left our luggage. We headed out to downtown and came back at night. When we just stepped in, we felt the room was humid and not cold enough after running the A/C in low temperature from the afternoon until we came back. Then my son spotted a big roach by the bed and my husband chased after but it went hide under the bed. A while chasing after the roach, my husband finally got it and we put it in a bag ready to show the staff that the room needed pest control. We were worried about the bugs/pests when staying at any hotel and unfortunately we spotted a roach this time. :( When I picked up the phone to contact the front desk for sending someone taking a look at the A/C, the phone was dead with no dial tone. I headed downstairs to the front desk to let the staff know about the A/C with a roach in a plastic bag with the phone dead issue. Even before I said "please send someone to take a look at the A/C", the front desk staff just immediately suggested to switch us to their biggest available suite and upgraded our entire stays. They do care about their customers and they handled the issues immediately and professionally with the highest standard they could offer, just like the way we remembered after all these years!!! :) The next room was clean and everything worked fine. We had a great stay this time and we'll be coming back every time when we need to visit New Orleans. We'd highly recommend this property to all visitors and...
