We stayed for two nights over Columbus Day weekend and the 3.8 rating feels right on the money. This place is fine if your expectations are low, but it is not a resort. It is a property that looks better in photos than it does in person.
Check-In & First Impressions: The women at check-in were kind and friendly. No issues there. The lobby looks nice enough if you ignore the “Out of Service” water fountains hidden behind fake flowers. Getting the parking pass meant stopping at the timeshare presentation desk where a man offered us a $250 Visa gift card for a quick 90-minute sales pitch. We declined, saying we wanted to see the property first. Smart choice, because calling this place timeshare worthy is laughable.
The Villa: We got one of the “renovated” villas, but it is lipstick on a pig. It photographs well, but the maintenance and quality control are nonexistent.
Exterior & Maintenance: The outside of the villas needs to be power washed. The siding has green algae, the paint is peeling, and the porch supports are visibly leaning. The wooden railings are soft and rotted, with fresh paint slapped over them like that would fix the problem. If you cannot maintain the exterior, it is safe to assume the inside is not being maintained either.
Interior Details: Inside, the bathroom vanity was chipped, the toilet paper holder was barely attached to the wall, and the baseboards were caulked like a toddler art project. The shower had no water barrier liner, so water poured out onto the floor and soaked several towels. The AC and heat worked very well, which honestly shocked me after everything else.
Beds & Comfort: We checked in as a party of three. The pull-out couch bed was terrible. It felt like two comforters laid over a metal frame. No bedding was in the room for it, so we had to call down. We did receive a follow-up call confirming delivery, which I appreciated. The linens bag included two extra pillows and one flannel blanket. Unfortunately, the main bed only had two top sheets as the blanket, so those extras went straight to the couch bed. The main bed itself felt like springs wrapped in fabric on top of plywood. The two sad pillows on it had the thickness of paper. For a place calling itself a resort, the fact that you would need to bring your own pillows and blankets to be comfortable is ridiculous.
Pool & Hot Tub Area: At first glance, the pool area looks decent, but that illusion fades quickly. The paint around the hot tub and pool is flaking off, and the floor was filthy. I wiped my feet on a towel afterward and it turned black. While sitting in the hot tub, I looked up and saw mold covering the skylight ceiling. There were maybe five towels total scattered across the rack. Not sure what the point is of telling guests not to bring room towels when there are barely any at the pool. The outdoor pool was half full of water and dead leaves. The lounge chairs were still sitting out like the staff had given up weeks ago. Nothing about this area suggested regular cleaning or upkeep.
Staff & Service: The front desk staff were pleasant, but follow-through stops there. Once you are in your room, you are on your own.
Noise & Wi-Fi: We did not use the Wi-Fi, but the property was surprisingly quiet. Even with people golfing right outside the windows, noise was not an issue.
Value for Money: Since it was a holiday weekend, the prices were higher. The Red Roof Inn fifteen minutes away was fifty dollars cheaper per night. We will be staying there next time. Nothing about this property justifies the extra cost.
Bottom Line: This place has potential, but potential does not count for much when everything feels neglected. Would I stay again? Maybe, but only if there is nothing better in the same price range. The 3.8 rating fits perfectly. Not terrible. Not great. Just completely...
Read moreLet me temper some expectations with this property. This is not a "resort." A resort is a high end, luxury property. This is somewhere in between a cabin in the woods and a 2 star hotel. With that said, if you go in expecting a comfortable stay on a beautiful property with a rustic feel, then you will love it here like my family did. If you are expecting high end accommodations and stellar, white glove service, you will be disappointed. This property could go from a 3 star to a 5 star pretty easily if they just tightened up some of the things I will mention below.
The Good: Staff [onsite] were friendly, helpful and responsive. The workers at the front desk and the on property restaurant were awesome and are what made our stay. I hope they're treated well because they are what make the experience. Unit was clean and well kept- The furnishings are dated, but it was clearly cared for before we got there, that was all that mattered to us. We loved our patio, the jacuzzi tub and the basic cable. We found it refreshing, like stepping back in time a few decades. We enjoyed the pool, the playground, the clubhouse. The grounds were well maintained. Never saw trash once, lawns were mowed and well kept. There appeared to be an extra level of caution as it was the midst of COVID-19. So it was good they were taking it serious. The property is far enough removed that you feel like you're in the country, but you can get groceries / CVS / etc within a few minutes. Great hiking trails nearby, of all difficultly levels.
The bad As said, the property is rustic and dated. The pool [we went to Fairway] looked like something straight out of the 80s. The pool needed a fresh resurfacing. There is no internet in the units unless you want to pay $20 per day, per device. The common areas like the pool had wi-fi so people would come there just to use the internet. This was problematic as there was a policy that no more than 10 people could be in one place at a time. They should have changed this during COVID-19 for the safety of the guests and staff. We put a swim diaper from our 2 year old in the trash in the lady's locker room, the next day, it was still there. Yikes! One towel limit in the pool, the towels were cheap and not absorbent. One towel barely did the job. The hot water was limited in our unit. You couldn't even fill up our tub without getting cold water.
The ugly The policies at the top of this organization are awful. Here are two examples. We asked for a late checkout [checkout is 10am]. They told us that we could checkout at 10:30. That is a grace period in most hotels, not a late checkout. This cut our whole trip a day short because we like to travel while our kids sleep. We also were having such a great time, we wanted to extend our stay a week. [Our first week was through a timeshare] We called and requested a quote directly through Exploria resorts and they wanted $200 / night and were unwilling to budge. Both of these above complaints are because the property was maybe 2% occupied [and that is being generous] as a result of COVID. You would think Exploria Resorts would want to work with its guests to help them amid crisis but they were inflexible. Not only that, isn't revenue worth more than an empty unit? Terrible leadership decisions that make me wonder how long this place will be in business. Lastly, the horse stable is pathetic and heartbreaking. All the horses are cooped up in a tiny surface area standing in their own poop. You should not have horses if you can't properly...
