Holiday Inn Express & Suites Mitchell by IHG — Hotel in Mitchell

I was on a sales call that required a long drive and short meeting. These sales calls are always the worst to far to make it home after but a short day of work. Making for a short afternoon and evening away from home. After completing my sales meeting in Huron an hour north of Mitchell I headed toward my hotel. I was notified on my home screen my room was ready on my way to Mitchell. I headed straight to the hotel and got situated in my room. Before heading to the pool.

Where I experienced probably the greatest after work stress relief I have ever known. I immediately sat down in the spa and began some chitchat with another middle aged man who I suspect didn't have water in his workout bottle. We met and told stories and watched some children go down the slide into the pool. Soon all the children were done and I decided I wanted to give it a go. I climbed out of the spa and walked over asking the lifeguards what is worse the stairs or the slide and can I handle it? They both laughed and shrugged their shoulders, as I started up the three story climb to the top. When I arrived at the top I caught my breath, and felt my thighs for the first time since football in the late 90's. I looked over the rail to the pool below higher than I was expecting. Looking in the tube that headed out into the darkness. I checked one more time over the rail mainly to be sure the lifeguards were paying attention just in case they were going to need to earn their paycheck in a min. I climbed into the dark cold tube and made the decision I will not cross my arms over my chest like the sign says and will instead hold my hands on the outside so I can hold myself back keeping the sliding at a snails pace where I would just plop into the water. I began to scoot out to the drop and then it was if something just grabbed me and pulled me into the abyss. The 3 story water slide twirls three tight turns to the right in the dark outside before shooting you back into the hotel pool area and slowing you down with two sharp left turns the opposite way and dropping you in 4 feet of water at the feet of the two lifeguards. I knew this, I had checked it out and I am sure I was only in that tube for a second. But if you ever wanted to know how Dr. Ellie Arroway (Jodie Foster) felt like in 1997 when she rode the space ship to see the aliens for the first time. This slide is it, I saw my life from the beginning until the end. I questioned if the slide was ever going to end. I wondered for a moment if I actually did die and this is what that feels like if you don't float away like all the good people you have heard about. And just before I really did think it was over I awoke at the bottom of a 4 foot pool splashing about with water up my nose. My mind screaming standup all you have to do is standup. I panic for just a moment more before standing up with as much dignity as is possible for an overweight middle aged salesmen. Who only a moment ago thought this might be the end of this life and had experienced every possible emotion I can think of. I walked to the ladder climbed out and immediately went two more times. I laughed, I cried, I am relieved, I am happy.

I received an email from IHG asking how my stay was, so I am in my office writing this review on Monday afternoon. If you ever find yourself in Mitchell South Dakota with some time to kill Go stay at the Holiday Inn Express, go to the pool, ride the slide. Do some Christmas shopping at the greatest Christmas store I have ever seen Cabela's. Then finish the evening by heading to the Depot down town probably the only place in the Midwest I have ever been served beer by an actual German speaking waitress. Have the Rib eye medium rare wash it down with there local Little Hazy IPA. Before heading back to the greatest little Holiday INN I have ever been to for an early night and a great night of sleep and a wonderful breakfast before heading home to your family. My family and I had the chance to stay at rhe holiday inn in Mitchell this weekend as my kiddos participated in the state pedal pull. We decided to spend the extra money to get a hotel with a fun pool area for the kiddos to enjoy. We arrived a few minutes before 3 on our check in day, and even though staff wasnt super bubbly, they were efficient and we were able to get checked in. Unfortunately at that time though we found out that the slide to the pool was not open. I was upset about that just money wise we spent extra for that specifically and then it wasnt available. I did not see if we could cancel our reservation however because we had other people coming to stay at that hotel as well and was not sure if we would all be able to cancel and find another hotel for us all on that short notice. Upon entering our room it seemed very clean and woukd work for what we need. We had a 2 queen suite and it did feel a little crowed as one queen bed was close by the window so hard to get to that side, however not a big deal. Shortly after arriving we were able to access the pool and did appreciate the size of the pool and that it had a bathroom in the pool area, as well as plenty of seating. At bedtime we utilized both queen beds as well as the sofa bed, that Unfortunately did have some food in it from a previous guest when we pulled the bed out. The beds were also on the firm side, which I personally do not prefer, so it was not the most comfortable sleep for myself. We took part in the complementary breakfast which although i feel it did have a few less options then other locations I have stayed, it was still a decent breakfast with a good selection of warm items. Unfortunately the juice machine was broken and the coffee had run out but was patient and just waited till new options were available. I do have to say I am thankful however that we found we had accidentally left my daughters shoes in the room when we left (and found this out at about 2pm when we were getting ready for the drive home) so we stopped back to see if they were there and the ladies at the front desk were super helpful and went and found...

The hotel is great - very new. Everything was comfortable and the room was great. The front desk staff was not at the front desk when we arrived at the hotel (not sure if it was the 10pm check in). there was no sign stating "we'll be right back" only to me finding that on the other side of the counter to pick up the phone in the seating area to get the attention to the front counter.

We were not greeted as priority club members, even though we were one. I stated that when I called to make the reservation that afternoon. The front desk clerk also took a bit to figure out and find our reservation and to pay for the hotel.

The rest of the stay was nice. The overlooking the pool and not an outside window from our room was a downer (on the 4th floor).

Checking out a luggage cart was not to be found and the front desk could not find one as well. We got everything we had in 1 trip. Had to check out at front desk to get a 0.00 bill receipt as none was slid under the door.
