I had read numerous reviews about this property, especially regarding the internet service that never seemed to be working, and called the hotel prior to booking to ask if this was resolved. I was told it was. You know what they say about "first impressions"? Well from the moment we arrived, the first thing we were greeted by was several hotel employees hanging around the main entrance smoking. I actually had to part them to get in the door! Seemed rather trashy.
Once we got to the room, I attempted to log in to the internet and it did not work! I called the desk and was told by the first person I spoke with: "it should be working, please continue to try". After no results, I spoke with another employee who told me it would work if she re-booted the router. Two hours later, we still had no internet. Again, I called the desk and was told there was there was nothing wrong with it. I ran into yet another employee and she told me: "the internet never seems to work in the room I was in"! Now I am not the least bit happy with the staff or Choice Hotels. I went to the desk and told the guy there that if they could not fix the issue, I wanted a different room. The guy at the desk didn't seem the least bit concerned, or honor my request. I know there were rooms available because there were only 6 cars in their parking lot, nobody in the pool, and the lobby was empty. By this time I am so irritated by every element of this crummy location that I gave up on even arguing with anyone any longer!
The next morning we got up for breakfast which was even worse than the internet service! Very limited breakfast items and the only hot offering was bad looking white gravy in a filthy, slopped up crock pot! Very poor indeed!
This was the worst start to a vacation I have ever had! Thank you...
Read moreThis was an all-around very poor experience. I am a regular Choice Hotels customer, and have noticed that most of the Quality Inns lately are not up to par, but this one should really be shut down and either massively refurbished, or rebuilt. Among the unpleasant aspects were: I asked for a room on the 1st floor, and not only did they not accommodate my request, there was no elevator in the building. (I have great difficulty climbing stairs) The only ice machine was on the 1st floor, so if I wanted ice, I would have had to use the stairs again. The room was very hot, even though it was cool outside. The air conditioner looked like it was decades old, was very noisy and put out tepid air. The toilet had been used and was unflushed when we entered the room. -There were no microwaves in any rooms, only one in the breakfast area. The wireless network did not work at all, would not connect. We were able to use another network nearby with a weak signal for a limited amount of time. The mattresses were very soft, and one of the beds had a lopsided mattress - had a dip on one side. The tap water tasted horrible - very bitter. They need to take the local "Pizza Ranch" out of their hotel information book. The service over the phone was pitiful, they were very slow, didn't know their own menu, and got our order incorrect. Price was much too high for the condition of this hotel. I had many other rooms on the same trip in similar size towns that were very nice for...
Read moreThis hotel is decent, overall. Our room seemed updated in décor, but there were some stains on the carpet in our room. However it was cleaned well, and I slept like a log, which is impressive for my hotel stays.
The front desk staff were very friendly and fast. This makes a big difference to me, for if it seems to me like the staff don't care if I'm there or not, it rather taints my whole visit to the hotel. But my experience here at the Quality Inn was top-notch.
Breakfast was so-so, with a good amount of options whose quality was generally mediocre. It was also cramped in the breakfast buffet area while guests tried to choose their breakfast items. The eggs tasted like cardboard, but they DID have honey packets, which I used to sweeten my plain oatmeal. They served make-your-own waffles, which looked good; but if a hotel doesn't have real, pure maple syrup, I always skip the waffles and pancakes.
The front door does not open on its own, and it also does not have a handicap opener button to push. I don't EXPECT hotels to have these, but for this particular hotel, there was a good incline going up to the front door from the outside. This made going in with a luggage cart rather difficult. My husband, who is in a wheelchair, also needed me to help push him up the incline while holding open the door at the same time.
The price was low for the city but high for Eastern South Dakota. I believe it was high due to the summer tourist season in Mitchell,...
