We spent our anniversary at the Mt. Vernon, King Louis XIV. First, this is an extremely old house with no updates besides paint. Per the email, we were told to bring all our belongings in with us when we arrived, and to follow the white rose petals to our first clue. After entering the shared common area through the front door, our room was straight ahead. After entering the passcode, the door opened into another small room (no white rose petals to be found). This was irritating, as there were no clues. We tried to find clues on our own, but this was challenging as we were trying to hold all our stuff. Frustrated, we used the QR code so we could enter our suite and put our stuff down. Once inside, we got into our robes as recommended (only one robe had a belt). This was annoying when having to crawl, climb, and slide through tunnels and trap doors, and trying to hold the robe together. The next clue told us to go back where we came from (as in, leave our suite and return to the shared common area). This was unsettling as we were in our robes (one without a belt) and were looking for clues while other people were entering the front door to get to their suite upstairs. That clue led to another door that had to be shoved open, (deep gouges were in the floor). Once entering the massage room, the massage gun and all the attachments were covered in oil from previous use (can you say GROSS). Completely disgusted, we decided to pause our gaming and go out to dinner. While trying to get ready in the bathroom, there was no place to set anything, not even a toothbrush. There was a built-in cabinet. When I opened it, I was smacked in the face by a musty odor. I immediately closed the door back and was forced to sit my makeup bag on the top of the toilet lid. There were no amenities like you would expect from a boutique style VRBO/or Airbnb. Usually there is a small lotion, a makeup wipe…a cheap toothbrush. This suite offered nothing except hygiene items in the shower (the shower did not work to its full capacity). There was also no full-length body mirror, which is also standard in most hotels/VRBO/and Airbnbs. The suite offered "snacks" (peanuts/popcorn/Hershey Kisses). For $540.00/ night (without paying for extra packages), the snacks could have been more upscale (Godiva chocolates, almonds, apples, granola bars, etc.). The kitchen had not been updated. The countertop was a laminate countertop you would find in an old diner (not King Louis XIV vibes). By the time we returned from dinner, we were really over the games and just wanted to enjoy the “largest bed in Ohio”, but also wanted to know what was in the chest in the headboard, so we continued playing. We ended up finding the body canvas paint room, (which we did not partake in since it was an extra fee, and we already felt we had overpaid for the experience we were getting). We found the key to open the chest which led to more clues. I don’t want to give away the surprise, but I was skeptical to touch any items in the headboard, as I was unsure how clean they were after experiencing the massage room. The last clue led to using another key. We could hear it click, but nothing happened. After going to sleep, about 45 min later, the door just flew open. Of course this made us jump. The LED lights in the headboard would not shut off (even when utilizing Alexa and the remote). We ended up using spare pillows to cover the headboard lights so we could sleep. As for the largest bed in Ohio… it was two mattresses shoved together that left a divot in the middle, and each mattress rolled you into the divot. This “luxury experience” was a far cry from making us feel like royalty. The lack of updates and uncleanliness of the room/ props made this stay feel very low budget. This themed suite could have been executed so much better. We’ve stayed at luxurious hotels for much cheaper, with more amenities that were sanitary. I truly wanted his to be an amazing experience to celebrate our anniversary, but it...

I will say up front that this room that is part romantic B&B and a much larger part escape room is not for those looking to climb into a robe and read a book for the evening. This room had us searching for clues, finding secret passage ways, climbing ladders, crawling into unknown spaces, and even going down a slide. But it also really emphasized working together and having fun while you were doing it. Whether it was dressing up and taking themed selfies together, enjoying massages in side by side automated chairs, or fill out love questionnaires in front of an idol strewn Amazonian waterfall, the adventure did focus on couples doing things in tandem and gaining enjoyment from this.
Our room was jungle themed (Paradise Lost) and was their newest room (had been open for only a few weeks) so we definitely were some of the first people through the adventure. Having said that, we were super impressed with the ingenuity of the room and the complex nature the house itself. Would highly recommend that you have done a few escape rooms before taking this on because if you are new to the types of clues that an escape room provides as well as where to even start looking, you might get frustrated quickly. Fortunately every clue came with a QR code if you really needed assistance, but it is much more fun to try and figure out mysteries on your own, try different things, and not just jump to the end.
Recommend that you get there right at the 5pm check in time because if you are only there for a single night, you will need a lot of that time to get through the room. We started our room around 5:15 (after checking out all of the decorations and just taking in the huge bed and shower) and didn't finish till around 11pm (with about an hour break for a nice dinner in town). Also recommend making reservations at one of the local restaurants (we went with Mazza and can recommend that as well if you enjoy Italian) as it was packed even on a Monday night.
Also, definitely ensure that your cell phone is charged up. We used ours throughout the escape room part because the lighting is (possibly on purpose) a little bit dim in many of the clue areas. There are blackout curtains on the windows and the light switches mainly focus on the bed and bathroom areas. So we used our phones as flashlights for much of the game and also utilized them if we got stuck and had to use a QR code. There are not people on site nor cameras in the rooms to ensure your privacy (these are meant to be romantic getaways), but there are parts of this were you could actually get stuck and not be able to return to the main room if you cannot solve a puzzle, so having a cell phone on you is pretty critical at all times.
In closing, if you are in the Columbus area and are looking for a fun night with someone you are close to, would highly recommend trying one of Romantic Adventure Getaway's rooms. These rooms will challenge but also provide a lot of laughs, romantic opportunities, and...
Read moreThe fun starts from the moment your significant other books this adventure. Between the strange questions like, do I fit in an airplane seat? Or do I prefer chocolate or paint? I was scratching my head, all while he made sure to tell me that one of us had to have our phone on us at all times and fully charged. So with hesitation, I packed an overnight bag and we hit the road, allowing me to guess where we were heading over the next three hour drive. I didn’t know much and that’s what truly makes an adventure/date night like this, so spectacular.
We pulled up to a historic house, I knew at least that much when we parked. He told me to make sure I grabbed all my items from the vehicle, because he didn’t suspect we would be coming back to the car anytime soon. We were walking up the sidewalk when my boyfriend stopped and said, the other guests are right there in the entryway (inside) and I said what’s that mean? Do we have to walk past them? Are they going to look at me crazy because of what I agreed to sign up for? Even though I literally had no idea what was behind those closed doors. Or even what on earth we both awkwardly signed up for. We kind of just stood there as they came out and said hello. The whole time I could only wonder what they just got done doing?! What was I about to be doing? I wanted to ask but didn’t..I still was clueless
We creaked open the door and was immediately greeted with such unique atmosphere. I was blown away with the rooms and decor. I wondered to myself Where was I? Was I crashing a psychics home? Were we about to meditate all night? The vibe was incredible and like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Between the flickering lights, crackling fire, mirrors and the bed hanging from the ceiling, I was pumped. We started our adventure, diving right into the first task of finding 4 color coordinated numbers, I was ready, game on!
Our whole night was filled with riddles and teamwork and it was truly a blast. There was such beauty in getting able to do an ongoing escape room without the ticking timer in the background. We had all night and got to go at our own pace. We proudly did each and every puzzle, riddle, and task with no hints, just pure success. We had a blast! This was the best date night we have ever shared and we literally can’t wait to do the next one!
I would definitely recommend this to friends! I mean whom I kidding, I already did! I wasted no time bragging on such a fun night and showing pictures of the different room(s) to friends and family. Yes you read that right, there are multiple rooms you end up in! So pack a light bag, some drinks and your thinking cap for a wild adventure, unlike any other.
Lastly I have to give a shout out to the host of the year. We were amply impressed by the fluid communication we had with him and the great lengths he went to ensure our trip...
