Abby and Nakoya: The Dynamic Duo of Disappointment at Cabana Shores Inn!
This 1-star review is for Abby and Nakoya the two ladies who work the front desk with Caribbean accents. If I could give negative stars, I would.
My husband and I decided to take a very last-minute trip to Myrtle Beach for my birthday. We made a direct booking for a two-night stay at this hotel because it was cheap and close to the water--nothing else. My expectations were low because of the price point and 2-star rating.
The only pros for this hotel were the oceanfront room views, proximity to the beach, and the shower. That's all; everything else is what you would expect from a 2-star property. At first glance, the room appeared to be okay, but after settling in, the decay was hard to miss. The room was dilapidated and in need of repairs (see photos), but it was cheap, so there's that.
When we arrived for check-in, we were assisted by Abby. You could clearly tell that Abby was inexperienced and in need of some refresher training, as she quoted the wrong totals. We inquired about late checkout, and Abby honored a 3pm checkout at a cost, which we agreed to. We were told that beach towels were available for us in the room, but we were only provided with two sets of towels.
After using the only two towels we had in the room at the beach, my husband called the front desk to request more. After waiting an hour, he went down to the desk, only to be greeted by a very unpleasant individual known as Nakoya, who is severely lacking in interpersonal skills and is in need of some sensitivity training. My husband inquired about the towels we had been waiting for and asked if she could get him some or point him in the right direction, to which her response was, "From where?" (as if he would know). He replied, "Wherever you keep them." Nakota walked two steps to a cabinet behind the desk and handed him three towels and washcloths. Once again, 2-star... no surprise here.
The day of checkout was the last straw for me and the only reason I'm writing this review. My husband and I had booked a 9:30am parasailing excursion and planned to have lunch afterward since our checkout was confirmed for 3pm. After our excursion, I saw that I had two missed calls from hotel at 11:30am. When I called back, I spoke with Nakoya regarding checkout. I informed her that our checkout time should be 3pm, as this was our conversation with Abby on day one. She informed me that late checkouts are only provided based on availability and that they were unable to honor a 3pm checkout. Instead of trying to find a resolution to a problem her associate created, she chose to offer to pack up our things and remove them from the room or call the police to have us escorted out, as if we were squatting on their property. Please keep in mind that it had only been 30-40 minutes after the standard checkout time. At this point, our day was ruined, and we had to abruptly stop what we were doing to rush back to the hotel. I was livid!
When we arrived back at the property, my husband decided to go in because I was flabbergasted and beyond angry.
Abby and Nakoya were at the desk when he came inside. When asked for an explanation of what went wrong, Abby admitted to honoring a 3pm checkout but also stated that it was based on availability, which she acknowledged she never mentioned. UNBELIEVABLE!
After a pointless conversation with the two of them and zero accountability from Nakoya for threatening to have us removed by the police, my husband requested if we could have about an hour or so to clean up since we were still soaking wet from our excursion, which Nakoya reluctantly honored.
To the management company: you need to rethink the individuals you vet and hire to represent your company, or you will remain a 2-star last...

Read moreI've stayed at this hotel twice. First time was in November of 2019. For that time, I stayed with my family and the stay was quiet. The second stay was at the end of December 2019, I stayed for a business trip.
Pros: Quiet Beautiful Ocean View Decent Price Average Amenities
Cons: Bang for buck - Cost was actually alot higher than what it should have been. Over $70 a night for a room of this caliber was terrible. Bathroom amenities missing (No shampoo, conditioner, body wash/soap, lotion) - All of them were just basic hand soaps like someone didn't care to actually refill them First night, the AC did not work. The fan did not want to turn on. Since on this stay, I had no thermostat in this room, I had to manually tweak the wall unit to try and get it to turn on. It did turn on, but no AC, just outside air. Lighting; This was on both stays. The lighting is terrible. The first stay with the family, the lights on the beds did not work at all. On top of that, what looks to be lighting in the kitchen/entry area, weren't even installed. There was just two holes where lights should be.On the second stay, the big floor lamp in the room didn't work at all. I had to unplug it, undo the lightbulb fittings and reconnect the wires/light switch wire (sinces its a pull down light switch to activate). Then, after that, only one side worked still. The bed lighting worked at least. But the kitchen/entry lights in this room were missing as well though Desk/table. The end of the desk by the dresser was damaged, and the dresser drawers never stayed closed. On the other end, the chair was wobbly, so it was uncomfortable to actually do work during my stay. There was damage throughout the room, which you will see in some of the pictures. For a newer renovated hotel at $100-130 a night, that's unacceptable. I can stay at a regular Best Western for cheaper and better quality. Just, without the view. Breakfast; There is just no breakfast in the off-season. The first time I stayed with my family in November, there was a bare breakfast in the morning from 7AM to 10AM for $8 a person. But its definitely not worth it. My kids breakfast at school for $1.75 comes with more/better food. Lastly, not really an issue with the hotel, maybe the area its in, but between 10PM & 11:30PM I received over a dozen blank calls which may have been prank calls, to the room. Since there is no staff for the nights in the off-season, there is no way to fix or resolve this issue.
** I did not use the bar at the front desk during my stay, so I'm not sure if that was even available.
**As another note, there is no easy access to the beach. The beach is across the road, but you have to go around the outside of the hotel into the road, with no pedestrian crossing, to get to the other side.
**Final note, it looks like they are still...
