I had a disappointing stay yesterday and this morning at the Elm House Inn in Napa, California. I assumed I would be in a friendly B and B type arrangement, greeted by friendly hosts. This may have been true at one time. Now, the place is affiliated with corporate Best Western. My arrival was coldly received by a quite unfriendly receptionist. She told me there would be baked cookies between 6-8 and gave me my keys.|I walked downtown ( not close at all-20-25 minute walk with no attractions along the way), had a bite to eat and returned before eight for a cookie. There were four cookies left but nothing else except for instant coffee and tea. No one else was around .|I went upstairs to my room to read but none of the lights provided enough lumination. I was not able to read except on a screen.|I had a horrible night trying to sleep. The furnace was very noisy, alternating between a blast of heat and a cold fan. This continued all night. The bed had five pillows, ranging in size from about 3' x 18" to 24" square. They were all lumpy and very uncomfortable. Goodwill might not accept them as a donation. The mattress was firm but the mattress pad was too small and the corner kept coming off. The sheets and top cover were tucked in so tightly that as a six footer, I couldn't pull them high enough to go over my shoulders. The mattress pad, the sheets and the cover all tangled up in a nightmarish mess with the multi-shaped pillows. The furnace just increased my irritation. It was a hapless night. It was a major contrast to the wonderful treatment I received at Dr Wilkerson's in Calistoga the previous night.|Besides the lack of light, the room had no charm. The towels and the shower and tub and other bathroom lighting were fine but I had no desire to stay in the room. I looked forward to breakfast.|Breakfast was again 2 stars. Someone made cheese and chorizo omelettes but then left them unheated for a couple of hours---totally inedible. For breakfast pastry they had processed poppyseed bread and they also had cold waffles made much earlier. They still had their instant coffee and tea set up and some melon that was so tasteless that I managed only one bite. I ended up eating two hard boiled eggs.|If I were driving through the desert in January I would've had lower expectations but this place is in Napa Valley, California, one of the most famous culinary destinations in the world. Why was there no wine offered in the late afternoon with good local cheese and crackers? Why wasn't there fresh fruit and pastries? Why did the inn not have someone making the omelettes on the spot? Why wasn't there an atmosphere where enthusiastic visitors to the area could share there recommendations of things to do? For the prices we paid, I expected all of these conveniences.|I recommend you stay closer to the river and downtown or stay at a chain motel another mile out of town. There you'll get a swimming pool and you'll...
Read moreStaying here is like having a fever dream that you're actually staying in an insane asylum. I honestly don't know where to start because I'm sweating bullets just thinking about having to stay here another night.
This is straight up the loudest hotel I've ever stayed at, and I've stayed at a hotel where domestic abuse was taking place. The road noise is egregious. The hotel is located smack dab on a 8 way round about and walls having 0 sound dampening ability. You'll hear everything. I knew we were in trouble when they had a white noise machine out, but bless its little heart it is not up to the task of this place. They put their ice machine in the middle of the staircase so you'll hear people going up and down the stairs allll night long. Beyond that, the guests staying are just rude. I thought we were staying in a day care at one point because there were children SCREAMING at the top of their lungs starting at 6a sharp and never let up. I went out to check out what was happening and there was a guest just sitting with their room open and letting their children run wild. Guests (and especially the staff) just have zero regard for making this a space for everyone.
Speaking of staff not making this a space for everyone, the front desk did nothing about all of this. Just watched it all happen and thought it was normal. They told me to address the problems myself, like seriously? They want me to tell other guests their own quiet hour rules and exterminate an ant infestation on my own? (Yup, the room we're staying in has an ant infestation). It seems ownership of this spot swapped hands lately and they got the worst staff money can buy to run it. I hope they're saving enough money to ruin any sort of historical good will this place built up over the years because its just not there anymore.
Stay away if you actually want to enjoy yourself. Or stay if you're just curious yourself now, but this is an awful hotel running around wearing a nice hotel's skin. Don't be fooled. You can stay at nicer places, for cheaper, and much closer to downtown Napa for...
Read moreMy husband and I chose Elm House for our honeymoon on the recommendation of trusted friends and family who stayed here in 2024, unfortunately our experience has been less than enjoyable. Upon checking into our room we noticed ants crawling in the bathroom, and the AC while cooling quite well was (and still is) extremely loud like there is something stuck in the fan. There was construction outside our room for the first 24 hours, and while we understand the hotel can't control when the city has work done, it would have been nice to have been given a heads up.
This morning we were both woken up by screaming children around 6am in the lobby area (Posted quite hours are 9pm-8am for reference). When I went out to grab coffee and breakfast, the child was unfortunately still screaming and the family had their room door wide open into the lobby seemingly not caring about the other guests attempting to enjoy their stay.
My husband went out to speak with the desk manager who refused to address the loud guests and instead suggested he should confront them himself, which in our experience is just completely lacking in basic customer service for their other paying guests.
Elm House markets itself as a small boutique hotel for a quiet stay and even advertises "romance packages" on their website, but I cannot for the life of me fathom how anyone could have an enjoyable romantic experience under...
