I am an artist who recently stayed in New York at 1871 House for two months during the run of a solo exhibition in Chelsea. With two subway stations within a short one or two block distance, the location was incredibly convenient and made getting around NY very easy. With the Upper East Side being a somewhat quiet area in comparison to other areas I have stayed, I never experienced loud noises that might affect sleep during the night. There are many good restaurants and grocery stores very close by. As a woman alone in Manhattan, I always felt safe in the area and the house. The hosts of 1871 House are lovely people, very friendly and helpful. Though they live on the main floor of the house, I rarely saw them, unless we made arrangements to meet. Any questions I had were answered promptly by email. The whole house is very quiet and only once ran into other tenants in the hall. I stayed in two suites- the front parlour and the rear library. Both were very comfortable for an extended stay with kitchen facilities, sitting and work areas. Both suites have big windows with lots of light and high ceilings, making it feel quite spacious.Decor is very fitting for the time period of the house. Housekeeping came once a week, arranged at my convenience. I highly recommend an extended stay at 1871 House. Great landlords, great brownstone, great area, and the best deal...
Read moreMy husband and I are Manhattanites who needed a home away from home while our apartment was being renovated. After a discouraging hunt for a short term lease through Leasebreak and Airbnb, we thankfully stumbled upon 1871 House.
From our first contact with Lia, the resident owner along with her husband Warren, we knew this was the real deal. Lia invited us to stop by to see the studio apartment before making a decision to stay there. The Rear Library met our needs and fit our budget. There were no surprises when we moved in. The studio apartment was quiet and cozy, equipped with a modest but workable kitchen. There was plenty of heat, hot water, and available internet connection. We could not have been in a better location, close to subways, buses, shopping and many of the cities best cultural offerings. Lia and Warren attempted to address any of our Concerns in a timely fashion and see to it that we were comfortable.
My only caveat about staying there is the stairs. There is no elevator in 1871 House and the Rear Library is two flights up. If you stay here, pack light as you’ll be hauling your things up and down...
Read more1871 House is my favorite NYC extended stay hotel! Located on 62nd Street between Lexington and Park Avenues, I cannot imagine a better location. I am near the best shopping, best food, my mid-town office, and minutes from Central Park. The townhouse is situated among grand single family brownstowns, each of which is truly magnificent.
Different from the customary hotel room, my suite was decorated with an antique bed, mahogany armoire and leather settee. The rugs, window treatments and linens were equally tasteful and inviting. I felt comfortable yet special. I loved having my morning coffee at the marble topped table looking out on 62nd Street -- it is a great spot to people watch and simply enjoy NYC.
The Raum's made me feel welcome and provided great advice about local restaurants and transportation. They are tremendous hosts and I will definitely return to...
