Where to begin …big sigh 😔☹️😞
I am not sure if our stay at Moxy nYC rose to the level of fraud— but it was close. We were offered (and Paid) for goods and services that were provided poorly or not at all. After multiple unanswered calls to the front desk we realized it was impossible for moxy to provide what they offered.
Before you read this understand the sarcastic tone is an indicator of displeasure and disappointment that rose to the level of anger after our terrible experience at Moxy NYC
At least 12 reasons the Moxy NYC sucks and you should look elsewhere to stay no matter What— consider this a public service message caution!
The entryway was more crowded than the A train … All it was missing was a crazy person… We definitely had plenty of angry people;
Check in was slow and we waited a long, long time in line approx 20 minutes or more The Entryway was stuffy, humid and smoke filled at times. Luckily we were directed to the third floor where were allowed to wrestle our luggage through separate elevator rides to wait in another line that obstructed the other bank of elevators that were the only way for the guests to get in and out of the building;
Fortunately we were able to practice our dancing skills; that is to say the two step of getting out of the way of elevators and getting back in line wait The dancing back and forth back and forth to allow people to come and go to the elevators;
Despite despite the long and uncomfortable wait, (and before being directed to the third floor check in line) there was enough people to keep the front door, propped open to the smoking area immediately in front of the hotel — which resulted in a steady and refreshing vacuum stream of vape and cigarette smoke—
Further, in the event you wanted to sit outside to wait for your Uber you were able to bathe in a slaughterhouse of cold cigarette ash ,Discarded wrappers, coffee cups and Once we checked in we were lucky enough to have to jostle in a tight space to wait yet again to get into an undersized elevator;
At breakfast yet another wait to be ushered into yet another public space where a phone rang unattended for 40 of the 45 minutes I sat at breakfast I waited to receive cold food and a 12 dollar cold bagel with unrefrigerated (not real cream cheese spread). Although the cream cheese was fake and warm I was able to use a real piece of cutlery;
There was limited connectivity with internet and in fact I had to rewrite this b/c I lost signal;
NO hot water …. I have a video of my wife scream expletives in the arctic shower fortunately she would not allow me to post;
Not hot water a second time. Calls to front rang unanswered( no video taken) it wasn’t funny after the first arctic shower;
Possible redeeming feature was that there is a window into the toilet ( from the bedroom area) ? Technically I had the opportunity view and listen my wife angrily bm from the arctic shock caused agonizing gastric distress of a cold arctic shower;
We called down to the front area to report the lack of hot water. I am pretty sure I was connected to the same phone that rang unattended through the entirety of my breakfast—
To sum it up -All of the above caused us to run late frazzled; luckily it set the tone of disappointment that set the mood for the remainder of the day. ( happy holidays!)
Post Script: Definitely need to add after our departure:
Ps # 1 So I left the hotel too crowded and hurried to complain and need to add —-
Ps # 2. Stuffy, crowded, lack of service, poor internet connectivity- offensive smells and claustrophobic spaces well worth the fair price of around 300 dollars. don’t forget the 12 dollar fake bagels.
ugh and avoid ...
Read moreEDIT: So the $170 charged ended up getting dropped which was wonderful, we love that :)
The $120 then became $112 and then there was another charge for $14.35. Both of those charges went from being pending to actually being on my statement. I called my cc company again and they tell me to get in touch with the hotel. I went back today to inquire what the $112 was for, and the guy who checked us out was there. I went with a friend bc honestly, the staff here isn’t exactly the friendliest so I just wanted some back up. I explain the situation again, and he explains that there’s a 100 dollar deposit fee, and then starts rattling off all these other taxes and fees and mentions a bedroom fee and I’m like? Isn’t that what the 108 was for? He gets kind of snappy with me and even my friend picked up on it. Maybe he was just tired of explaining it but I was just genuinely confused with how their billing system works. Anywho, he says to give it 5-7 business days and the 100 dollars will be refunded, so all that’s left will be 12 dollars and the 14.35 charge. He makes it a point to count from the day the charge went through to todays date was was like “that’s only been THREE days, you need to wait FIVE BUSINESS DAYS”. So now we wait to see if the 100 will INDEED be refunded. If it’s not, my credit card company has assured me they will take care of it so I’ll be getting my money back one way or another.
Okay I’m posting this because I want to get this sorted out asap. The place is nice, rooms & location is alright and I would come back except they just took a BUNCH of my money for no reason. So my boyfriend booked a room here through a 3rd party website, hotels by day, about a week in advance for 08/26/2023 and it was supposed to be 108.50. We get there and I get charged $170 on my credit card ( I assumed we were paying at check in). We go up to our room and our door isn’t opening (the battery died or something, the nice lady at the front got it sorted out whatever) As we’re leaving I start to wonder why $170 when it was supposed to be $108.50? So I ask and the guy who’s checking us out is like oh destination fee plus taxes whatever so I’m like okay cool. Then I wake up the next morning (08/27/2023) and there’s a $120 dollar charge from the hotel. I call them and a woman answers and says “oh it says you’re still in house” and I’m like !?!? because I’m in my bed at home. Then I ask her about the extra 120, and I honestly forget what she said but she sounded in a hurry to get off the phone. She asks for my email to give me a receipt and then hangs up (never got that receipt by the way). I called my credit card company right away and they’re keeping an eye on both charges. But when I was speaking to my boyfriend about it today he realizes that he had paid for the room through hotelsbyday ON the day that he booked it, (which I didn’t know at the time, again, I thought we were going to pay at check in) and shows me the charge on HIS credit card statement. So all they should have charged us when we checked in was the destination fee and whatever taxes and fees they were lopping on. I’m not trying to discourage anyone from coming here, I just want to get this sorted out and get my money back. I’m not sure if I can update this review but if I can I will. My credit card company said to wait 5-7 days so finger crossed that this all gets...
Read moreExcellent location, one block from the 8th Ave subway and surrounded by excellent food, coffee, sights, and entertainment. Rooms are as small as you'd expect in NYC but by FAR the most cleverly designed I've ever seen when it comes to making maximum use of the space. Everything folds out, folds down, tucks away. Shocking amounts of drawer space. Most comfortable bed I've ever had in a hotel (it was very firm with a soft topper).
Service was excellent. Someone was always holding the door open, bar staff was super friendly and so was the front desk. We had some maintenance issues that were resolved within the hour (clogged sink and the barn door for the bathroom kept coming off the track because the backstop was missing). We were also missing our bathrobes, which were $80 and I didn't want the hotel to think we'd kept them and charge us for them, but they brought them right up. The downside? I'm 5'4 and a size 8/10 and they didn't even remotely fit me: tight in the shoulders, and the "waist" tied right under my breasts. Not sure if they accidentally gave us two child robes or if they just assume all their clients are tiny.
For some reason the water in the hotel tastes TERRIBLE (NYC has some of the best-tasting water in the country, so that was weird), but they handed out free bottled water throughout the whole stay.
I have three complaints about the place, one large, two small. The biggie is that, in our room at least, there was a painting on the wall that slid open to reveal a window directly into the shower. It slid open FROM THE ROOM, not from the bathroom. They didn't tell us about it, either; we discovered it accidentally. That means that someone could very easily creep on whoever they're staying with, and we were frankly horrified by it. Not a good design choice under ANY circumstance.
The first small issue was that the hotel really is trying WAY too hard to be trendy. Their voicemail is CRINGEY, like, straight-up Steve Buscemi carrying a skateboard saying "hello fellow youths!" The music in the elevators is pounding and too loud to even have a conversation over. These aren't serious issues but just. Be aware.
The second small issue is that there was plenty of room to leave a coffeemaker but they didn't because that way they can sell you $5 coffee at the downstairs bar. (There wasn't even any cheap coffee in the businesses around the hotel, so that sucked, and I HATE having to get dressed before getting coffee.) I know a lot of higher-end hotels do this but it's a pet peeve of mine; please make your money in ways that don't require grumpy morning!me to have to put on her big-girl pants before caffeinating.
Also, it's basically impossible to find the parking garage (the address isn't listed anywhere I could find, so we had to call the hotel to get it, and then the GPS didn't work because of all the tall buildings), and once I finally did, they wouln't take my 150 pickup truck.
TLDR: I would absolutely return to this hotel. Good service, excellent location, very comfortable, and superb use of space. Just bring your own...
