I'll start with the positives that have been echoed among other reviewers. The location is ideal if you want to be in the heart of Times Square. The staff were generally pleasant, though I thought they could have more working the front counter when the check-in lines get long.
"Noisy" would be the word I'd use to describe our three-night stay. There appears to be some kind of labour dispute between (former?) workers and the hotel, so they show up every day at 7am blaring horns and blowing whistles. Even from the 20th floor, it was grating and made sleeping in difficult. It also occurred every day until mid-afternoon. When you exited the lobby, it was cringeworthy loud. Adding to the commotion are giant inflatables of rats and bed begs that you can't help but stare at. The walls of the hotel itself are thin (I could hear a patron in the next room sneeze) and with the lack of carpeting in both the rooms and hallways, all sounds are amplified. The gap under the room doors is big enough to slide my toes under so you pick up every sound from foot traffic in the hallways. People coming and going at all hours, it's just beyond noisy. On the third night, a yappy dog's bark carried through the halls for a good two minutes. I get that NYC is a busy place but the traffic horns and sirens (at all hours) at street level add to the cacophony. Finally, though not a deal breaker, the room below ours was being renovated so there was the constant sound of thumps and scrapes of what I assumed was drywalling, mudding or spackling going on, usually beginning at 7am (I was already awake thanks to the aforementioned protesters).
The room itself was "acceptable" in that it was one of the newer, renovated ones. I liked the skyline art over the headboards. Simple black and white decor gave it a sharp look but the longer you stay, the more you see that it's only "surface clean". Dust buildup in corners, stains on walls and doors...you get the idea. The renovation work was shoddy as well - poor carpentry (hardly a 90 degree angle in sight anywhere) and slopping painting. The ceiling above the toilet gave evidence of a leak from above and had only been partly repaired. The view of 51st Street could have been pleasant were it not for the dirty windows (I guess window washers is a dead profession).
I'd have been content to offer a 3-star rating but upon reading and hearing about other customers' experiences, I find the hotel's message misleading. I had checked their website and they really "sell" the idea behind the rooms and their luxurious features. However, I assume these are for their most exclusive rooms, and not the Executive (where we stayed) or the "run down" suites that others have commented as being old, dirty and outdated. There was no daily free national newspaper, as advertised, nor are the in-room coffee and tea packets the brand name they suggest. I question the double pane windows that reduce noise (see first paragraph) and their idea of an "ergonomic chair", which was just a fabric lounger. An Australian couple initiated a conversation with us on the elevator ride and they described a very dingy room with words like mold, dirty carpets, and plaster falling from the ceiling in the showers. They were on the 9th floor. Maybe The Manhattan's motto is you get what you pay for.
If you're reading this review to consider a stay here, I'd suggest booking an Executive room or better. Otherwise, just look at the reviews from other people and their experiences as it relates to the cheaper rooms' decor, condition and cleanliness. I'm certainly glad we didn't have one of these lesser rooms; but we paid significantly more for the Executive room we did get.
Management: Your 1-star reviews are beginning to catch up to your 5-stars and the most recent ones are mostly negative. I'm sure you'll copy and paste the same response to this review as you have with the other critical ones. These are empty promises. If you were indeed serious about the feedback you get from your customers, you would have fewer critical...
Read moreThis is part one of many. I visited the manhattan at Times Square last week with my cousin and we two women in our younger 20s, traveled on a redeye over 6 hours to NYC. This was by far the worse hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Upon arrival we had asked to use the bathroom to change out of our airport clothes since our room was not going to bed ready for at least another 8 hours but we could call to see if there was a room ready if we left the hotel. Of course we left since there were two small couches in the “lobby”. There was no available bathroom to use, we were told to go across the street and use another hotels bathroom. The service when we first got there felt off. We asked if they were able to hold our bags, and were reassured they would be put in a safe room but not after begging for a tip. We walked around for hours and were starting to get tired so I tried calling the hotel, they hadn’t picked up for over an hour and a half but I was finally able to get ahold of someone and they stated our room was ready. We hurried back to the hotel to get checked in, when we arrived our bags were in the hallway right where we left them and were not put in a secure room. Going up to our room two of the elevators were out of service so we had to wait what seemed like forever at the time. Throughout our whole time the elevators were an issue. We finally made it up to our room, and the door lock was not intact, which didn’t make us feel comfortable. The room was extremely old and dirty from years of grime build up. Which was not what we paid for, or what was advertised on their website. But we pushed on and tried to get ready for the rest of the night since we had plans. I went into the bathroom, there was hair in the sink, water leaking from the ceiling and sink causing the paint to separate and peal from the ceiling and wall. We found mold in the shower head and in the tub insert there was water that had somehow gotten under and felt like you were on a waterbed. We kept looking around and there were cracks in the walls and looked like the walls had years of smoke build up. We found one working outlet and they had plugged in an extremely old extension cord. One of the wall lights was not working and the thermostat was hanging off the wall. The carpet was so disgusting I wanted to wear my shoes on the floor, this was the equivalent of a motel 6. Luckily there weren’t any bed bugs and yes we checked multiple times. This is obviously not what we had paid for or what was advertised. We were very frustrated and wanted another room since we felt we were getting taken advantage of because of our age. We decided to go downstairs and talk to the receptionist. We were extremely nice and not pushy in any way. When we started explaining our room situation and we didn’t feel comfortable staying in this room the receptionist rolled her eyes and said of course. Which made us think this is a problem that happens all the time. She told us we did not pay for the premium room that is advertised on the website. Which we booked through Expedia and those were the only rooms on there. If we were going to do that it would be an extra 200 dollars on top of what we had already paid. But she said we could look at another room and they could give us complimentary breakfast which I will get into in a minute. We went upstairs once again on the extremely slow elevator, upon exiting in the hallway the carpet was coming up due to water damage. The room was way cleaner but still older. We went back downstairs to see if we could possibly see the nice rooms we thought we were originally getting because at this point we did not think they even existed. We had been told there was a premium room when we first when down and after we went back down to see if we could see what a premium room looked like to consider paying the extra 200. We were told by another receptionist there were no available rooms, beside the two we were shown. There was never a “we can comp a night or get a refund” mentioned. So we ended up taking what we thought was the...

The reason for our trip was to meet family from overseas and we were not the ones who chose the hotel. Against our better judgement we decided that we would stay here so we were all together.
The pictures that are posted on the website absolutely do not accurately depict how rundown and out dated the hotel is. Once onto the floors, the hallway is cold and damp with a musk smell. We paid extra to stay in a newly renovated room based off of other reviews saying how rundown the hotel is.
Upon checking into the room, my boyfriend and I went to take showers to freshen up. To our surprise there was NO hot water in the shower. As we had reservations and it being Valentine’s Day we didn’t have time to wait so dealt with a cold shower. Before leaving we spoke to front desk staff who advised that the hot water had been turned off for the day due to renovations going on, but would be back by the time we returned. This would have been nice to know upon check in, but at the time we were willing to believe it was just something staff forgot to tell us.
Our second night at the hotel is where it went really downhill for us. We returned to our room with lint and dirt from the air duct all over our towels and personal toiletry items. Attempts were made to call housekeeping and front desk and no one answered. Despite how awful this hotel is, there is always a long line at check in with only one person working. We did not want to wait in the line when there is a direct extension to housekeeping and front desk.
Eventually I had to call reservations who attempted to get in contact with the front desk and were also unsuccessful. At this point in time my boyfriend ended up going to the front desk to speak with someone. Once at the front desk he was met with attitude from staff who told him that the reason why people were not answering the phone was because all staff were on “lunch”. They did say they would send someone to look at the room however appeared extremely annoyed by the fact he had asked them for assistance.
Eventually staff from house cleaning did attend and one of the staff members asked a manager of the cleaning staff to look at our bathroom. She showed him not only where all the dirt was coming from and the state of our washroom but also that there were wires hanging out of the wall. The manager advised that this was unacceptable and offered to speak with front desk and ensure a room change.
My boyfriend went back to the front desk to get new room keys. He was told new keys would not be issued to him unless we had brought down our belongings and returned the keys to our current room. When he asked for a trolly to help bring our items down he was told no. Our new room was going to be on the same floor and in no way made sense to lug our stuff down and back up to the same place.
We cleared out our stuff from the room and he stayed with our belongings on the floor and I went down to get the new keys as he had lost patience with staff due to their attitude and rudeness. Once I got to the front desk I was met with the same attitude. Housekeeping had graciously cleaned up the dirt but once we got our stuff out of the room and I did a look over to make sure we had gathered all our belongings; the bathroom once again had the dirt and lint all over the counters. I took a picture again to show front desk incase they wanted to shut the vent so there wasn’t a build up. I was met with “you’re changing rooms aren’t you?” And little care for the inconvenience of the whole ordeal.
When we got into our new room it was freezing cold and the thermostat could not be turned on to make the room temperature warmer. Not only that the walls in the hotel are so thin, we could hear the entire conversation of the people in the room next to us. After the lack of care we experienced we did not bother to make staff aware of the problem until the next day when new staff would be on duty.
Never would stay or recommend...
