!!!COMPLAINT!!!: When being seated, a middle-aged female black attendant (describing so she/they can be identified) came up to us and said and I quote "Are you Chinese or Filipino?" When I didn't answer out of shock, she repeated the question several times in quick succession. Then proceeded to say "I know you're not from here - you have an accent" and would not let the subject drop. This is incredibly unprofessional and racist and I would hope that the Winter Garden Theatre would take matters like these seriously. She was assisting seating in the left orchestra area at the 3:00pm show on December 18th, 2022. She was also rude to several other guests, belittling them when they weren't sure about where to sit, etc.
REVIEW: I visited this theatre for a showing of The Music Man starring Hugh Jackman and Jodie Foster. I rushed - it's $49 per ticket, maximum 2 tickets per person. Came to the box office (Broadway St. entrance) at 8:30am on a Sunday 12/18 and was 5th in line. Box office opened at 12pm sharp. Ticket sales went very quickly. We obtains seating in the 4th row, Orchestra Left at the very edge (D17, D19). It was very cold waiting in line for that long - I suggest bringing blankets. There is a McDonald's right across the street if you need bathroom breaks/sustenance while waiting in line. The lady who sold the tickets was curt/unfriendly. I heard the same from the people who were in line in front of us.
Entry started 30 minutes prior to the show at 2:30pm for a 3:00pm show. Entry went very quickly. They check your bags intermittently - no weapons allowed of course. You enter the theatre on the right side.
The theater itself is lovely. Reds and golds. Very old fashioned with circular box seats. Of course, upcharged refreshments. They had themed drink cups.
The seats were partial view but it wasn't too much of an issue. There are maybe a handful of times in which the action happens in the rear of the stage which you miss. However, these parts don't last that long (only a couple minutes at a time) and don't take away from the whole of the show too much.
The intermission was not long enough to accomodate for everyone to go to the restroom - lines were very long and it wasn't feasible for everyone to get in/out before the end of intermission.
Show itself had wonderful costumes, set, effects. Would highly recommend Music Man before it ends on Jan 15, 2023. Significant applause when Hugh Jackman enters and when Sutton Foster enters. Delightful young actors/actresses as well who do an excellent job.
Afterwards, exit through the doors on the left to get to the stage door. For our show Hugh Jackman came out 2nd, just a few minutes after the end of the show. He stayed quite a while to chat with fans. There will be fans waiting who weren't at the show so it'll be difficult to...
Read moreThis was probably the worst experience I had at a theater in New York, and I have been many.
I went to go see Back to The Future The Musical with my boyfriend to see his first Broadway show. When he bought the tickets, he thought they were standard tickets. Instead, they were standing room. My boyfriend is permanently disabled so he was not going to be able to stand for the shows run time (he can walk. He has a cane). We were told that because it was a sold-out show, they couldn't get a seat for him as he was on the floor of the box office, not being able to get up
I think it was the show coordinator that came out to help (Bless her. She was the best part). She pulled up a chair next to the two disabled seats at the back and had me stand behind him. As the show started, we realized (we know that there are some hidden disabilities) that the two men who were in the handicap seats were abled men.
Everyone part of the cast and crew of the show did great, but as a theater, the staff of the theater, such as the box office and ushers, were all unaccommodating, rude, and disrespectful. Even though I was told by the show coordinator to stand right behind him, there were multiple times when the ushers told me I couldn't, and I had to go into the standing room zone.
There needs to be more accommodations for this theater because I should not be having a fight with staff about finding a seat for my boyfriend when he is collapsed on the floor. New York law states that if anyone with a disability needs accommodations. They have to be willing to provide those accommodations, sold out or not.
If you are disabled and thinking of seeing Back to The Future, go see the show. It's truly amazing, but don't come back to the theater again. Ever since Beetlejuice left, the theater staff has gone downhill, and I would rather go to a theater that accommodates my partner, then...
Read moreBeautiful theater, fantastic show. The theater personnel are very polite and friendly. The venue is clean and well maintained. We saw Back to the Future and it is fantastic. The cast is excellent. Their portrayal of the characters is amazing. As a Back to the Future movie fan, I would say they are exactly what you'd expect to see. The car is like nothing you ever seen before. It is truly part of the cast. It talks, lights up, blows smoke, and even flies. The special effects far exceeded my expectations. As a live theater fan, I couldn't believe how amazing this show is. I think it will remain on Broadway for many years. If you're an avid theater fan this is one you won't want to miss and if you have never been to a live show before this would be a great first theater experience. Bravo to the creators, producer, director, cast, orchestra, choreographer, set designers, costume designers, stage crew, sound crew, lighting crew, and all the other people behind the scenes that make this show great. Thank You Winter Garden Theater for hosting this wonderful show.
"Spoiler alert don't read below if you don't want to know what happens"
You will be amazed at what the car can do. Imagine a car lifting off the stage the wheels fold under it before it flies from the stage to above the audience while hovering there it turns upside down with Doc and Marty waving at you, once it returns up rite it spins around 180 degrees then flies into the stage and disappears. You don't need to imagine it. Go see this show and it will happen right...
