FRIENDS Don't Let FRIENDS stay at the Wyndham Inn on the Harbor.
Let me start by saying, it is close to the water, they have beds and showers.
Now my personal experience having never been to Newport Rhode Island.
Upon completion of an 18 hour drive from Michigan (not cutting across Canada, the border takes too long to get through.)
Tired from the road, the experience began with a
“Where’s Waldo” game of finding a parking spot. I discovered later that the resort has 56 rooms and 51 parking spaces (they have a few more but you will be double parked and blocked in using those spots.)
You can park across the street at the cost of 10 dollars a day/weekday, 20 dollars a day/weekend. It is 40 dollars a night. CASH ONLY. ( The resort will reimburse you for this parking with al receipt.)
As the week moved forward 5 more parking spaces were closed off due to remodeling being done! Keep in mind at this point the place was booked solid from the last week of April until August! Very bad time to remodel!
As far as the room, we entered tired and upset. (There are 2 levels of parking and if you are on the lower level you will need to carry your bags up one flight of stairs to get to the elevator.)
The hallway door opens into the bedroom. I found this very strange. This bedroom position does allow you to hear all the activity in the hallway, including the neighbors slamming their door repeatedly starting at 5:15AM. So if you like to be totally aware of the goings on around you, this is the place!
Do not worry, you have bifold closet type doors to separate the bedroom from the living area. That have knobs only on the bedroom side, so be careful when closing them.
The cabinets had a vinyl type wood pattern covering them. This was torn and peeling in many spots.
The carpet was stained and ceiling covering was peeling in spots.
Not all of the windows would open.
The exhaust vent in the bathroom had layers of dust stuck in it, dating back to the early 1700’s. (I guessed this was the historical aspect of the area!)
You will be provided pots and pans, microwave and a 2 burner cooktop, with utensils and plates.
Television and wifi included. (A bonus vhs/DVD player also! So bring your vhs collection!)
All of the staff was helpful except one.
A call was placed to the manager. Do not bother calling, there was no answer or voicemail.
The maintenance person was called to fix a wall mounted shampoo dispenser that had fallen off. He stepped into the shower with dirty work boots leaving footprints.
VERY IMPORTANT!!
If you are not booked in rooms Numbered 01 to 06 for example 201, 203, 403, etc.. your only view of the water will be when you are driving in circles trying to find a parking spot!
Request those rooms if you choose to stay here.
They actually painted the hallway walls of the floor we were on, Friday the daly before we were to leave!
( You can't make this stuff up! )
To be totally honest, I have had better amenities at a rustic campground.
I would keep looking for a place other than this. I will never return.
If it were closer to Michigan I would have canceled and gone home, the...
Read moreI cannot stress enough how disappointing this place was. We spent a good amount of money on a Club Wyndham timeshare membership and were expecting something similar to the other resorts we have stayed at in the past. Others have been very nice and in great locations, but this one resembles a third-rate Best Western or Motel 6 (if they even still exist). Newport is a lovely place to visit and I highly recommend it - great food, hospitality, walk-ability, family-friendly (if you need that), and beautiful sights.||Wyndham Inn on the Harbor gets two stars from us for 1) a great location and, 2) a great view. It has a very odd approach that feels like a back alley hourly-rate hotel. Everything from the flooring, to lighting, to furniture, to the lobby are outdated. There are no all-weather mats when entering from outside, on either the lobby level or the lower garage level, so you are tracking in dirt constantly, requiring continuous mopping leaving a constant wet floor all day, every day. There is questionable security with a sports bar on the first floor and no keycard access to the single elevator. Speaking of the elevator - there is only one for the entire building so you share it with the maintenance personnel and get to peek at their back hallway workings. It was very unsettling to say the least. My last comment about the entire location, before moving on to our room, is that there are absolutely NO AMENITIES. Parking and WIFI do not count, in my opinion.||Our one-bedroom mini-suite had a very odd layout as we WALKED DIRECTLY INTO our king-sized bed from the hallway, the door barely clearing the corner of the bed. There were ceiling leak patches throughout, no bathroom fan, water pressure via only one shower setting, no working outlet in the bathroom, the shampoo/conditioner/body wash bottle adhesives kept falling off of the walls AND we lost hot water (throughout the property) for a day. The lightbulb in the refrigerator didn't work; the cabinets were in poor shape (attached photos). We did not request maintenance for the light bulb as it was a minor inconvenience but added to the overall lack of attention and oversight in this room. The décor was (again, outdated) very sterile - there were no accent pillows, placemats, anything to attempt to create a atmosphere of hominess or comfort. Lastly, there were no local brochures, a Guest Binder of any sort in the room, not a kitchen inventory, which we have come to expect when staying in a time share.||We love visiting Newport and will visit the two other options in this chain to see how they compare. With such a low bar set, the other's will surely be an...
Read moreJust finished a one week stay through RCI. This was not our first time visiting Newport but was our first time staying at this resort. Newport is absolutely our “happy place.” We love the great food, relaxation and area attractions. The location of this resort is ideal…walkable to all of the shops and restaurants on Thames. The unit was comfortable and the floor to ceiling windows in the living room overlooking the harbor are spectacular! It was wonderful to sit in the living room and enjoy the view. We stayed in unit 561 with close access to the rooftop which is a great feature. The layout of the unit with the door opening directly to the bedroom is a bit odd. In the morning, the maintenance/housekeeping staff had no mercy constantly banging doors while cleaning and having loud, animated discussions in the hallway. Every morning we were awakened by them. The unit was cosmetically clean although, I dropped something behind the nightstand and was met with years worth of dust, dirt and hair! There is also mold around the bathtub. The units probably need periodic deep cleaning. Almost everything worked in our unit but one window was broken and did not open and the hvac unit was VERY noisy. We called in advance to inquire about the partial kitchen since I was planning to bring some breakfast foods. The woman who answered the telephone told us the refrigerators were “personal sized” and she wasn’t sure if there was a freezer so we decided to skip the breakfast foods. Her info was incorrect. We had a full size refrigerator and two burners, which is very nice. Also, we had no idea there was a bar on the second floor until we read reviews. No one pointed it out! The television offerings were disappointing since they are very limited which was a challenge on bad weather days. Parking is TERRIBLE. They have these impractical double spaces that you could get blocked in and there are not enough spaces for the number of units. Two nights we had to park across the street at the sister resort which is a dark walk if traveling alone. I noticed that other reviewers mention paying for parking and being reimbursed but no one mentioned that option upon check in. At check in, the timeshare spiel was too much. I had to say “no” 10 times before they would issue our keys. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and could possibly stay here again. A bit of staff training and attention to detail would make this place...
