We were really excited to come back here for the first time since COVID. The Red Parrot was an important part of our annual summer day trip to Newport, and the last time we were here was 2019. Unfortunately, we were sorely disappointed.
It was surprising to open the exact same menu we had left in 2019 - no additions or updates. And even more surprising to have no cocktail list, only frozen cocktails. I feel like I remember getting a flavored margarita, but I guess they did away with their cocktail list and only have a handful of frozen cocktails to offer.
I really love oysters, but like most oyster-lovers I tend to prefer specific types. I have never been to a seafood restaurant that did not know where their oysters were from until coming to The Red Parrot in 2024. When I asked where the oysters are from our said ‘oh I don’t know, we don’t really know that. Maybe Maine or something’. To be fair I was a bit surprised at his response and never asked him explicitly to go check, but it seemed a futile question as he had established the servers were not intended to know the answer (to what seems a typical question to me).
I ordered a salad and my partner ordered the soup. The salad was okay, the berries with goat cheese was good though I was not a huge fan of the dressing. The lobster bisque was incredibly salty with barely any lobster in it. We had intended to share, but after having a spoonful I knew I lucked out getting the salad
I ordered the New York steak with lobster meat, my partner ordered the scallops. The steak was bland and dry, the lobster didn’t taste fresh (but maybe the taste of the steak was throwing it off). Worst was finding bits of shell in my lobster. I had some of my partners scallops that were somehow rubbery, though the outside lacked any golden crust.
For the price it was not the meal we expected. While I understand our server is young and likely earning his way through school, the service was lacking and uncomfortable. You used to have to wait an hour to sit down here (with three levels!!) so I should have expected a change when we walked in at 7pm without a reservation and were able to be seated right away. With so many other restaurants in Newport, I suggest trying somewhere else. I know I...
Read moreWhere to start!? This 3 floor restaurant has the biggest menu i have ever seen!!! Surely something for everyone! From seafood to salad to sandwich to burger they have it all!!!! We got mucho nachos and couldn't stop eating them!!!! So so good. The clam chowder is my second favorite clam chowder hands down. Was almost a buttery flavor mixed in. Seriously delicious!!!! For our main courses I got the ny strip steak which was so tender !!! Little bit if fat pieces but not enough that it took away to much from the steak! The mashed potatoes were also very good 👍🏻 the veggie of the day was the asparagus I disliked that very much. It did not even compare to the rest of the things we had. Plain and bitter flavor. Seems as though it was steamed and that was it they called it a day. Added a little spice and pepper to try to get it tolerable but at the end of the day luckily I did not go there for veggie anyways!!! My friend got steak stuffed with lobster with the French fries and veggie of day (still asparagus) she said it was sooo good! Said the lobster inside was the perfect amount of butter!!! The atmosphere here is nice and peaceful it was dull lights which made the night enjoyable. You can see the water from some of the seats which is a nice bonus when eating in newport. Our waiter was very nice. It was a busy night even though we went at 6 on a Sunday. Only a half hour wait and the restaurant was still full to the brim when we finished up and left !!! So I am not going to knock him many points but he was not very quick to bring things we asked for. But eventually they always showed up and in my book that's good enough! I would 100 percent recommend trying this place out. We paid cash so got what they consider the cash discount. We each got two drinks as well. She had 2 Jameson and Coke and I had 2 deep eddy grapefruit on the rocks. Our bill was 170. To me that is a wonderful price for the amount of food we got ! We each had left overs to bring home. If you find yourself in newport... you've got to stop in! Even if it's just for the...
Read moreMy husband and I hadn't been to the Red Parrot in years, but on today's visit to foggy Newport, on a Sunday after New Year's Day at around 1:00, we knew that this was the only place to eat if you can only choose one dining option during your trip. NO REGRETS! We sat in the corner on the street level and enjoyed people-watching and the lifting fog over the harbor. We both had soup - I had the creamy, tasty lobster bisque, and my husband had the NE clam chowder which was perfectly seasoned with dill. We shared the Bucket of Steamers... surely enough for FOUR people but we ate it all; these steamers came steaming (literally) in a bucket and were cooked perfectly in a garlic/wine sauce, and they were accompanied by plenty of melted butter, lemon wedges and crusty bread (and plenty of wet naps!). With barely enough room for the entrees, we were able to try a few bites before wrapping up leftovers to take home. I had the lobster ravioli which was the best I've ever had; local lobster meat filled the heart-shaped raviolis and there was a good amount of choice meat in the delicious sauce as well. My husband had the seafood alfredo... picture it in your mind and on your taste buds (before you look at the attached photo)... and you won't even come close! The alfredo sauce was to die for and obviously house-made, and there were so many sea scallops, shrimp and real crab meat. You could tell that the scallops and shrimp were cooked (or grilled) individually before being added to the dish because there was a hint of grilled goodness within the deliciously-sweet scallops and tender shrimp. So after today's experience, I am certain that I will never have better chowder, steamers, lobster ravioli or seafood alfredo anywhere... and I've tried these items hundreds of times in my 50-something years. GO TO THE...
