First, the cost of the location is ridiculous. There's really little reason for it to be priced so high. It is not near the city's center, the square, or the Ole Miss campus. It also is not located on Hwy 6 which is a much busier thoroughfare than Hwy 7. Very few of the businesses located around the property even were open on the weekend--very disappointing. The hotel offers less amenities than its competitors in town, as well. It felt like highway robbery paying that much for a location that has so little to offer its guests.
The handle on the back door to the hotel does not open by the commonly used method of pressing the handle down. Instead, you have to pull the handle up to gain entry, which made no sense to any of us in my room. We ended up walking around the building in the cold, and the front desk clerk alerted us to the confusing issue with the back door handle.
This location does not offer the SEC Network. Here we were in Oxford, Mississippi, home of Ole Miss, an SEC school, on an Ole Miss Football gameday against one of our longstanding SEC rival opponents, and we had zero ways to watch the game in the hotel. VERY disappointing! Every SEC town needs SEC Network in your hotels.
The breakfast bar had no meat and no milk. "Hot" breakfast served, in the South, on a Saturday morning, and there was no sausage, bacon, ham...nothing. There were plenty of cereal choices, but there was no milk. No milk at breakfast. The most important meal of the day. Every family who passed through the line when I was there was complaining about the same thing. We and several other families, including our team's coach, had to spend more money out of pocket to go get a decent hot breakfast elsewhere off the property. Even with the exorbitant hotel rate we were paying, there was no breakfast meat or milk. Ridiculous.
The TV remote in the room did not work well. The only way it would work is if you got up out of bed and walked all the way over to the TV and stood in front of it. Frustrating.
My room had no view. Literally, all you saw when you opened our curtain was a large wall and the top of the awning in front of the hotel. I knew that we would be behind the awning, but I never knew that there would be a big wall facade. Again, crazy price for a room without a view. Also, there was some machinery on top of the building outside of our window that was loud. It would frequently cut on and off and disturb us at times.
The tub still had some curly black hairs stuck to the wall in a couple of spots.
Several of the bed pillows were so thin that our heads touched the mattress in the middle when you laid on them.
There were no plastic laundry bags in our closet, as you get at most locations.
A couple of the things that were good was that there was a quick check-in process. The elevators were centrally located and close to both the front and back entrances. The room was relatively clean. The hotel was close to the high school. We had plenty of hot water in our shower...
Read morePros: Nice lobby, clean room, spacious bathroom. Cons: Very hard mattress-like sleeping on a table! Be sure you bring your own charging block because there are NO USB Ports anywhere in the rooms. We looked everywhere- lamps, desk, television, alarm clock. There was no hairdryer in the bathroom. While we were dealing with another issue at the front desk, someone else was down there asking about getting a hairdryer. While trying to get assistance with our main issue, we thought our room phone was broken, but after pulling the side table out from the wall we realized it was not connected to the phone jack. Our main issue was with the fact that the hotel allows tour busses to park in the back parking lot and leave their engines running all night. We were located on the back side of the hotel on the 4th floor. I thought the thrumming sound was coming from the AC. It was a constant rise and fall noise that grated on our nerves making sleep impossible. I turned the AC off, but the noise continued. That’s when we realized the noise was coming from the parking lot. After we figured out why the room phone didn’t work, we called the front desk. To her credit, the concierge did go outside (with my husband)to speak with the security guard associated with the tour buses. We were told that the hotel owner/general manager has an agreement with the tour company that allows them to park in the parking lot. When my husband went outside (this was now 1:30AM), he was verbally attacked by a very aggressive man associated with the tour group. They refused to turn the bus engines off because apparently people were inside the buses sleeping. No one seemed to care that we spent $200 (Ole Miss Baseball weekend price) for a night of no sleep and a curse word laced verbal assault by someone not even staying in the hotel but using its parking lot. We had audio proof of the engine noise and the concierge witnessed the aggressive behavior of the tour bus representative, but we were denied a refund when we left early the next morning. We contacted the general manager, but did not receive a response for several days. Eventually we were given Hilton points (not anywhere close to being enough to redeem for anything). After several more emails to the hotel management, we were promised a $150 refund that is supposed to be processed in 30 days. This was a terrible experience and we do not recommend staying at this hotel. (Unless you want a place to park your tour bus!) Please see my 5 star review of the new LaQuinta Inn in Oxford if you’re looking for a great experience. They were booked solid or we would have stayed...
Read moreThis well-established Hampton Inn is currently undergoing an upgrade. It is pet-friendly. Front desk personnel were pleasant and welcoming. Our basic double-queen room (#301) was rather small. There was barely enough room to accommodate our above-average assortment of luggage. A distinct doggy odor was evident on entering the room. This is common to most, if not all, pet-friendly establishments. The room, indeed the entire facility, was impeccably clean. The bathroom was a bit small but the shower was good. A couple of minor bathroom problems were evident. First, the body gel shower container was completely empty and, second, part of the shower head fell off when attempting to adjust the spray pattern. The beds were comfortable. Despite much searching, we couldn’t find USB ports to charge our devices. We understand that such ports will be installed as part of the upgrade. A temporary solution might be to install portable USB wall-hubs which can be purchased for as little as $15 per unit. Breakfast was good and the seating area was large and well maintained. A slightly frustrating issue was that we couldn’t find the room closet. We thought it may be behind a large mirror but the mirror wouldn’t slide right or left, and wouldn’t budge when pulled forward from the right side. Next morning, staff informed us that it only opened when pulled from the left side - a rather unusual design. Perhaps management could place a small sign on the mirror indicating this fact. In summary, a good clean facility in need of a little better...
