While in Deer Valley, we split our time between two hotels, both of which were recommended to us: The Goldener Hirsch and the Montage. We will review and compare both with the goal of providing as much information as possible so that travelers can make an informed decision based on their priorities and preferences. ||For those who don’t want to read the entire review, the sum of it is this - If you want a gorgeous room, you plan to cook most of your meals, and you don’t care about amenities, the Goldener is a great option. If you are looking for a more self-contained hotel that offers an amazing spa, great food, easy transport options, don’t plan to cook and are ok with ho-hum rooms, the Montage is your spot. ||For the Goldener, here are our detailed thoughts on what we believe most travelers consider: ||ROOMS - We were told to book a room in the “new residence side, not the old side,” which we did. We give the room a 5 out of 5. The furnishings and decor are gorgeous. The room was the cleanest hotel room we’ve ever stayed in. The room is self-contained in the sense that it is more like a furnished apartment with some extra amenities. Everything you need is there (they even have a real coffee maker, which I loved - not one of the pod machines in most hotels that don’t really make a full cup of coffee) and the shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc. smell wonderful. ||AMENITIES - The pool was not open for use when we were there in June, something we wished had been disclosed when we made the reservation or at least within the cancel period. The “spa” facilities/amenities aren’t much to speak of. There’s a co-ed dry sauna. There’s also a small outdoor pool with a hot tub connected to it. The sauna, pool and hot tub all seemed undersized to the size of the hotel had the hotel been at full capacity. It felt like the minimum was done to check a box and that it wasn’t consistent with a true four-star hotel. We ranked the amenities at a 3. There is a spa facility at the hotel next door that was serviceable (but it doesn’t hold a candle to the Montage and wasn’t accessible unless you booked a treatment there, which we did.)||RESTAURANTS - This seems harsh, but we rate this a zero. The food offered at the hotel and in walking distance wasn’t edible. I mean REALLY wasn’t edible. We ordered a meal at the hotel and at a restaurant nearby (Cena). Neither of us finished even half of the meal. The menus reflected what seemed to be an effort to have unique offerings, but came off as overcomplicated, perplexing and not at all interesting. We struggled to select items from the menu and then really couldn’t eat them because the respective kitchens didn’t carry it off. That said, if you book one of the rooms with a kitchen - they are fully equipped. If you plan to cook and not really eat out and don’t mind going to town center when you do, Goldener is a great option. ||HOUSEKEEPING: Hands down a 5. (Read above - Cleanest rooms we’ve ever stayed in.) ||CUSTOMER SERVICE: Really nice, warm staff. Customer service gets a 5. ||Overall, we rank the hotel a 3.5. If you want to stay in an incredible room while in Deer Valley, you plan to cook your meals or go to town center for meals, and you don’t care so much about amenities, the Goldener is a great option. If you want a great restaurant and spa facility on site, and you don’t care about constant disruption while in your room (even when the privacy light is on), try the Montage, which we give a 4 overall (5 if you don’t include our ranking for...
Read moreDon't believe the rankings for the Goldner Hirsch. My wife and family (3 adults, 1 teen) stayed in a residence and a studio suite that I booked after reading that it was the #2 spot in CN Traveler Reader' Choice awards. Having previously stayed locally at the Montage and St. Regis, my expectations were high.||||The fitness and spa facilities were underwhelming at best, far below standard for a hotel in this category and not comparable to the Montage or St. Regis, other Auberge Resorts properties that I've stayed at, or countless other hotels in this category. The Fitness center was no more than a fairly small room with 2 bikes, 2 treadmills, a rowing machine a cable machine and dumbells. There was no separate area for stretching or yoga, nor were any classes (yoga or otherwise) offered. As for the spa, this was little more than two treatment rooms, lacking any changing/locker rooms, pre-appointment changing rooms, steam or hot tub or showers for post-treatment.||||The rooms were also somewhat underwhelming. One of the rooms we had (studio suite) had no view out the window (we backed up to a concrete wall), and an undersized shower in the bath. Housekeeping did not properly restock the room, leaving us to call several times for basics such as washcloths and Kleenex. There was little or none of the "personal touch" ascribed to the hotel to make the experience better.||||Dining choices are limited as well. The Kitz coffee shop has a "fair" selection for breakfast and the Antler Lounge was understaffed, leading to long wait times for food an beverage. The Goldner Hirsch restaurant was lovely, but patrons who don't stay at the hotel make it difficult to secure tables for hotel guests.||||If you want to ski, and ski only, Goldner Hirsch may be for you. However if anyone in your party doesn't ski or enjoy winter sports and wants to relax with a workout in a true Fitness facility, as well as enjoy a real spa, then I wouldn't recommend it. We've had great experiences previously in Deer Valley at other hotels, and Goldner doesn't compare. We left with my wife saying that "I won't do this again", referring to both the Goldner Hirsch and ski trips to...
Read moreIncredible location at the base of the Deer Valley resort, perfect for winter and summer activities, with superb service, outstanding restaurants, and great amenities including a fun top deck pool and fun infinity edge style spa tub. Auberge Resorts took over this Deer valley classic a few months ago and have done an outstanding job of improving this Deer valley classic into a world class hotel. The new residences and rooms perfectly complement the old room Austrian charm of the original hotel. We stayed in a large suite and also a 2-bedroom residential suite, both in the new wing and both were modern, well equipped with remote control fireplaces, great lighting throughout with beautiful décor. Although our rooms had none or extremely limited views of the mountains the location is incredible, and the top deck is a fun place to hang out with wonderful views of the mountains. The regular shuttle service into Park City main Street is a wonderful convenience meaning we hardly ever used our rental car, so if you don’t need one then take a Lyft to the hotel. We stayed during summer and hiked a bunch around the Deer valley and Park City Mountains but from I could tell this would be an amazing place to enjoy a winter ski trip with all the amenities and proximity to DV.
However, the reason for this five-star review is mostly because of the amazing team. We were lucky enough to stay for over a week and during this time we felt like family.
Stay here, I can’t imagine you’ll be...
