We stayed here last year and it was excellent. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast w/ baked french toast & a berry compote. Our cabin was lovely. I was thrilled because they have a great hot tub, and did not use Bromine in it. (I asked, because I have a severe Bromine allergy) We loved it. We even bought our daughter a nights stay for Christmas! When our anniversary rolled around, we decided to book another night to celebrate in the middle of a week long camping trip. We arrived in our cabin & found someone elses shoes on the floor by the closet, which made me question the cleanliness of the cabin. (See pictures) The furnishings are looking a little shabby with lots of scuffs and water marks on them. (When it starts to get shabby, lower your rates, or replace or refinish the damaged furnishings if you are calling it upscale and charge $300+ bucks a night! ) We went for a bike ride, then returned to enjoy the spa. The spa was not as clean as last time. Seriously an inch of sand in the bottom, & pine needles floating. This is also one of those spas with a rough surface that will snag and ruin your suit, so beware. The view is wonderful though. We relaxed in the spa for a while & chatted with another couple. We got out of the tub, went back to our cabin & I immediately began to itch. Within an hour, I was covered in hives, only on the body parts that were exposed to the hot tub. To put it mildly, our romantic anniversary was ruined. I hoped to find a first aid kit with benadryl or burn cream or hydrocortisone cream, but there was none to be found. By this point, it was late and well past the posted hours, so I didn't want to disrupt the owners. I made it through a miserable night, & asked Dean in the morning if he used Bromine now. He said he ALWAYS has. I can say that is not true, because I asked him on our previous visit, & also did not have an allergic reaction on that visit. I was surprised not to get any sort of sympathy to my obvious discomfort. He said they did not have any allergy remedies on hand, so I went to the store. We were extremely dissapointed in the breakfast. Aside from the standard fare, which you fill out a form at check in selecting your options, there were two slices of leftover fritada (the other couple had said they had it the previous morning) and a couple of plain scones. It was dissapointing there was no cold cereal, as we did not select the oatmeal or cream of wheat since the fresh food had been so abundant and delicious on our previous visit. While we appreciated that Dean let us use a hose to rinse our bikes, & their stellar location, our experience this visit was really dissapointing. As I write this 8 days later, my Bromine rash is finally beginning to clear up. Sadly, the rest of our anniversary trip was majorly impacted by my allergic reaction. While I realize my allergy is not any fault of our hosts, it is clear to me they switched chemicals. For a place that emphasizes their consideration for peoples allergies on their website, and in the literature they provide at check in, (ie: asking people not to use perfume, fragrances, smoking, etc.) I would have hoped for more consideration in my situation. I also wholeheartedly agree with another reviewer, this place is micromanaged. (Which you could say contributes to their success! Their guest books are filled with wonderful comments from highly satisfied guests.) But I have never seen so many rules and instructions! On our first visit, we laughed about all the rules. How to cook, how to clean, how to check in and use their luggage cart, which wash cloth to use for what, how to be courteous of other guests, etc. We were not offended by this at all, but did feel like we had to mind our manners and speak in low tones at all times. Sadly the b-fast and hot tub made this an overall dissapointing experience, especially considering it was the "splurge" of our trip! We really missed a fresh breakfast by a talented chef. I found Dean's problem solving lacking for someone running a customer based business. Very sad second & last...
Read morePay $280 to be treated like a kid with rules like "scrape off your plate in the garbage, use disposal sparingly, don't cook with too much garlic, load dishes in the dishwasher" and that's just after you eat. Everything has a rule. Not relaxing. And the hot tub was dirty. Bad filtration. Only 3 of 8 jets work. Sad cause it's so beautiful.
Continuing: I wish I had read some of the lousy reviews on other sites before paying our non refundable $280 . Besides the fact that we are micromanaged at every turn from how to use the luggage cart to how clean up, these people are NOT HANDICAP FRIENDLY!!! My boyfriend had one leg. An above the knee amputee. It's an obvious handicap. All I wanted was one night where we could relax in the hot tub. We had issue with the broken safety railing, broken tiles and only 3 of the 8 jets in the hot tub working. Even the ADA parking is the same as any other parking and a wheel chair would definitely have an issue navigating to the broken hot tub. Anyway We are pretty chill people and afte 4 days of camping I just wanted my boyfriend to relax before he goes back to his rigorous job where he also helps people who have lost their limbs. So even though there were some obvious safety issues, we pushed through with a smile! This is the main issue: No one has ever questioned us about our service dogs. My boyfriend has a visible disability. We carry our paperwork with us but have never had an issue in restaurants or hotels. Dean (owner) came to our cabin that clearly has a do not disturb sign (I was naked in the bathroom) and harassed us about the dogs. We were literally on our way out and told them that. It was check out time. But Dean said he would he back. We were packing to go and he came back to harass again (within minutes). Let me also be clear that Dean assumed we did not have the paperwork rather than ask kindly to see the cards and doctors notes we carry with us. My boyfriend clearly explained to him what the dogs when he is not wearing his prosthetic. He put us on the defense instantly coming to our cabin just as we were leaving the place.
We left and they proceeded to send us an email threatening us and giving us an exhausting scolding of how it's a federal offence to not have real service animals. Umm... seriously? So my one legged boyfriend needs to prove that he has a disability? Also they are highly trained which is obvious to anyone who meets them. The letter also insinuated that our dogs "barked repeatedly" This is a flat out lie. They are trained to alert us if someone is coming -- because as you can imagine if an intruder were to come to, say your cabin in the woods with a "do not disturb sign," my boyfriend would need a minute to get himself his crutches. Also they claimed that we were hiding the animals. We were not hiding them. We had their service harnesses and they were with my boyfriend when he approached our cabin area outside. This establishment is one that there is a self check in station. Had they had a front desk they would have seen us and the working dogs. The whole experience made us very upset but we wanted to leave it behind. The disturbing email did not let us forget and just made it worse which is why I decided to write this review.
If you are not handicapped be aware that for almost $300 they will micromanage your every move. There are a bunch of rules about not cooking certain foods and cleaning up after yourself and how to load the dishwasher for them. This place is not relaxing and a total rip off. It's so unfortunate. We could have gone to a beautiful resort but instead we had a horrible and offensive experience. micromanage...
Read moreWe stayed here a couple months ago and also back in 2018. Cabins are cozy and well appointed with comfortable bed and furniture. Everything is clean. The woods that are the heart of the habitat are magical. We would recommend to the owner that the hammocks hanging from the trees be hung differently. The trees holding up hammocks are terribly scarred from the ropes tie around them. We were very sad to find out that the woman who created this lovely place with her husband died last December. Oddly that seemed fitting for us as we were grieving our own family losses during the year prior. It appears since then some things have been downgraded. Don't expect much from the food. It's Continental breakfast, but there's not much to choose from and not high quality or very tasty. That's a huge change from 2018 when his spread was amazing, both in quality and presentation. No worries though... Port Orford has several excellent places to eat or get high quality food, and there is a fridge in the cabins and a very accessible kitchen in the community center that guests are encouraged to use to cook their own food. The community center and hot tub area remains a beautiful place to hang out. Most disappointing part was at the end when we had a terrible text exchange with one of the staff who was furious that we used the sofa bed without giving advance notice ... There were no extra linens but there was a clean mattress cover so we used to our own linens and a couple of their throw blankets. We didn't know we were going to use the sofa bed ahead of time so we texted the staff at checkout to let them know so that they could charge us the extra fee if needed. Instead, we received text lectures about cleanliness that included personal insults and general rudeness followed by a Willy Wonka style lecture about all rules and policies being in the contract. I eventually had to block the staff person.
No longer a sanctuary habitat, but still a lovely, comfortable, convenient place to stay. Just offer up a fee for utilizing the sofa bed, which was extraordinarily comfortable by the way, and throw blankets ahead of time to avoid the wrath...
