This hotel provided one of the worst experiences I have had at a Marriott property and I’ve been a loyal customer for 30 years.
The initial room we were in was so close to the highway that it became impossible to talk or relax without interruption. Apparently, this was the reason the rooms at the hotel had 'white noise' sound machines. I asked to be moved and, unfortunately, nothing was available until the third day of my stay, After moving all of our belongings on the third day to the new room we found it in disrepair. The A/C was broken, lamps were missing, other lights were not working, the refrigerator was not closing, the window was completed obstructed by a metal overhand. Moving again (after unpacking was not a reasonable option). The maintenance staff tried their best to make things whole but they did not have the right tools or parts to fix the majority of problems.
The hotel staff was nice but seemed very inexperienced and lacked maturity to effectively manage the hotel or our situation. For example, I had to reach out 5 times to the front desk about availability for another room after I was told earlier in the day that a new room would be available around 1pm. Not once did anyone on the staff reach out to me to provide an update on our situation. This resulting in my having to hang around the hotel until 5:15pm and being late for a 6pm meeting. The maintenance staff tried their best to fix things in the new room and were very apologetic but, one of the maintenance team constantly verbalized their frustrations with how things were not properly done to keep the room well maintained. Inappropriate in front of the customer. Several members of the housekeeping staff apparently didn’t show up and, as a result our room didn’t get cleaned. When a housekeeping staff person did come to the room, she did a good job and was very courtesy. On the other hand, when her manager came up, the atmosphere changed as the housekeeping manager began to reprimand her in the room in front of me about how slow she was moving and that non-check in rooms should only take 17 mins. Extremely inappropriate in front of our customer and certainly devalued my experience.
We will definitely never stay at the Fairfield in North Portland ever again and have to seriously consider whether, in general, Fairfield Suites are the best properties for our stays...
Read moreWe arrived early around Noon in Portland and drove to the hotel right away. With my Gold Elite status, we have never had any issue checking in early especially when we have also checked in through the Marriott Mobile apps. When we arrived at the hotel, instead of getting warm greetings by the front desk staff, we were told that check-in is at 3 PM (without asking us for our reservation number nor our credentials). We thought it was very rude and not very Marriott-like that we used to get with your other hotels. This was definitely not a good start of our vacation week that we had been looking forward to in a long while. Then, after explaining to the front desk staff that we checked in through the Marriott Mobile apps for an early check-in request and that we had a wedding to go to in the afternoon, plus, we just had a long flight from Detroit to Portland in the very same morning, the staff looked into the computer for the first time. She claimed that there was a large convention, which was questionable, as we did not see a lot of people nor cars in the parking lot. With no apology, suddenly she said there was a room available! It could have saved us 15 mins to explain ourselves why we needed the early check-in. So, we checked in to a room which was really small and outdated/dingy. We were hoping for a free upgrade that was supposed to be a part of our Gold Elite membership benefit - but we did not get one. After we settled in for a few mins, we went out for lunch and did a little shopping nearby. We went back to the hotel at 3:00 PM to get ready for our friend's wedding, took a shower and dressed up. Around 3:30 PM, suddenly the power went completely out! We thought the generator would kick-in. But no... few minutes passed by, we couldn't even contact the front desk as the phone died as well. It was a complete black out! My Husband and I had to finish dressing up in the dark!!! What a ridiculous and unacceptable situation to have in a hotel room. An hour went by, then, two hours went by, power was still out! We finally got ready after the struggle getting ready in a small hotel room with no power and left the hotel around 5 PM and the power...
Read moreThere were several issues with our stay at this hotel. The manager on duty did an excellent job taking action to rectify the issues, but they were remarkable nonetheless. For whatever reason, it was assumed we were part of a group that had booked a block of rooms, so we were assigned a room on the first floor, which smelled of cigarettes--the window was open and the screen had been punched through (by a previous guest?) Second room also assigned on the first floor within the block of rooms by the group had two beds--one had been slept in and was unmade. Upon returning to the front desk, I asked if we had to have a room on the first floor. This is when they asked about our "group" --we explained that we were not part of a group. So, the third room assigned was on the 3rd floor and was ideal; the manager escorted us to ensure all was in order.
The morning after our New Year's Eve event in the local area, we were awakened at 7 am to a child screaming and running in the hall. Having had my own children, I ignored it until 9 am when we found he was sitting outside our door screaming at the top of his lungs--parents in the hallway were doing little to collect him. At this point, we prepared to check out and let the front desk (same manager) know of the issue. As we approached the desk, thankfully we caught eye of a good sized puddle of water on the slick tiles beneath the courtesy water dispenser. More attention to details in the various departments is needed. A survey from the hotel was completed and a general manager indicated they would...
