Hmmm, TLDR. This review is a tough one for us. We loved it and had some quams. First, the people who are employed there are wonderful and personable. The location is perfect. You can walk anywhere in the town (city) and see the sites and eat at any restaurant, reservations recommended. The hotel itself is more like an inn. It's eclectic in design with wonderful woodwork all around. The room in which we stayed was brighter than what we've read about with the exception of the bathroom, which needs brightening, a lot. Just brighter bulbs would probably do the trick, but it was dark. Breakfast was wonderful but again they should really invest in new flatwhere. It's old and dingy. They may also need a new dishwasher as I found the glassware waterstained and thought they weren't even washed. More than once, I grabbed a utensil that was dirty. This really is one of my more critical reviews, sorry. The reason for such detail is would I stay there again? I actually think I would as strange as that sounds. I washed my utensils. Strange, yes, but the breakfast was too good to pass. We used paper cups instead of glassware. We actually found the price reasonable compared to the chain hotels on the other side of town, and the other side of town wasn't as pretty, at least we thought so. You know, I don't know, but when we go back, again if they have brighter lighting and new utensils with a better dishwasher, this review would be so much shorter and better Good location, center point and quiet.

This place lies about their prices. They don't honor what's on the internet through their third booking.

Then I'll say sorry or anything. You'll be stuck. They don't honor prices even though they don't boot up their own computers. They will say that they had a computer different so it's not their fault.

They do not honor. You'll be sitting out there if you want to in the cold. Then they make you go and talk to their booking agents instead of them doing it even though it's their mistake.

They don't care if you're trying to help them or whatever they don't give a whatever. I don't care if you're in the cold. You have to find something else whatever.

They can make a mistake themselves but make you deal with the problems of the mistake they made. Therefore it's up to you to speak for absolute hours, dealing with their booking company.

They don't care about you. They're not grateful for you. I would say this place is basically awful. They'll tell you that yes everything is good come in, an hour later a different response once you're all ready to go.

It will take you hours on the phone dealing with the booking agents that they should do themselves, due to it was their properties mistake. They don't care.

It will take you all day. Nothing shall be accomplished but a waste of time. If you want to be gas lit on vacation or a business endeavor or what it may be, I think there are a lot of nice thotels here that are more honest I wouldn't deal with this.

Another thing is I talk to the GM. I said what if this happened to an older person, they have 20% on the phone and we have absolute bad weather conditions. Like where the

You have nowhere else to know you paid for this your family helped you whatever? You might not have any power on your phone or what on, they're not going to respect that even though it's their issue. There could be so many scenarios.

You traveled so long, you realize there's bad weather conditions but for whatever reason you can't be where you were supposed to be something happened, and they say oh well?

And what you need to do is go talk to the third party that book to you that we made our mistake on so that you have to go do this yourself! We are talking a long time on waiting calls. You are doing it all, meanwhile freeze in the process.

It could be anything, you suffer the repercussions of their bad business strategies.b

You can explain this to their GM, she will say I don't know about the what ifs? What if that what if this not my problem.

If that's not bad management because I took hospitality classes I don't know what is? The what ifs are your job that's what you took your training for! Do you need to know what is going to happen if you are not ready for the what ifs?

One should always be prepared for what ifs or you should not hold that position. If you owned a store would you wait for people to slip on ice and say WOW! Not my problem not ready for the what ifs? Be prepared. No excuses.

Instead would you give them a number to call? Let them be on that number for hours.. the words can happen and that's totally bad management I'm sorry it really is.

Consider how they deal with the what ifs and how they don't handle their own situation,. Could be you and I wouldn't put my hands into something that selfish. Risky to say the least.

What if it was you and...

*Management has NOT been in contact with us, as noted by Abby H./The Hotel Portsmouth's response. That comment is literally the most we have heard from the hotel & clearly it is not great. We are still waiting for a phone call and a resolution.

Save yourself the cash and stay elsewhere.

I would NOT be writing this review if we had heard back from management, but my husband and I called & emailed with no response, it has been almost a week since our stay.

Horrible experience is a understatement. My husband and I stayed at Hotel Portsmouth last weekend for two nights in the Garden Suite. Upon arrival we noticed the claw foot tub we planned to soak in was filthy and the floor in the bedroom had food all over it. We decided to not say anything and go on with our evening. After all we are on vacation! When we got back from dinner, it was around 10pm and we were ready for bed. We try to unlock the door to our room and the key won’t open it. We asked for help from the man at the front desk, and he told us this is common and really annoying. He would need to call maintenance (not in house)and we could either go back out again or wait in the lounge for them to open our room. We asked if we could just switch rooms, but the vacant two room were dirty. We ended up falling asleep in the lobby and they woke us up when the door was opened. Not a great way to start. The next day we tried to reach a manager by the phone in our room to talk about the previous night and discuss the mess. The phone rang and rang. No answer. No help. Got dressed early, no one at the front desk either. Still no communication. Ran into other guest that were also looking for help, nobody around. Everyone left to enjoy vacation away from the hotel. When we got back our room (late afternoon) was still dirty. No one came in during our entire stay to clean. Tried the front desk again. No answer. Left the phone to ring, nobody picked up. Decided our stay was so bad we would check out as early as possible. We asked the woman at the front (YES, apparently people do work at this hotel)to speak with the manager, it was Tues morning and we were told she would not be working until the following day and we should email her. The woman at the desk told us she would give us a refund for our stay and this happens often. Not great to hear that this is a common occurrence, but happy to know we could discuss our situation with management soon. It’s now Thursday afternoon, we still have not heard anything from a manager. Super upset. This is literally the first review I have ever made, and I am doing so because our stay was so bad. My husband and I are left feeling horrible about our vacation. At the price we paid, we could have stayed at a much nicer place, that’s clean, safe and with friendly service. I also, would have never written this if we had any contact with the hotel but I feel I have no other choice.

Save yourself the cash and...

Just left the hotel Portsmouth. We were there from Sunday 12/29- Monday 12/30. Everything was aesthetically lovely as usual. My husband and I go here every year before Christmas to do some last minute shopping and enjoy a night out and we've always stayed at hotel Portsmouth. I got very sick the day before we were due to arrive for the dates we had booked before Christmas. I called to cancel our reservation once I found out I had to pay $170 regardless if I came or not, I asked if I could rebook instead of losing my money. The gal on the phone said yes, but I had to do it right then if it was after our booked time I would lose my half deposit of $170. We had initially booked a room for four because we had possibly another couple coming with us. And we were told that if it turned out just the two of us no problem we can book it for two people and obviously for a lesser price and she did quote me the two different prices of the four person bedroom versus the two-person bedrooms and they did not cost the same. Since I had to book it I asked if I could just have a room for two since the other couple couldn't make it. Again I was told "no problem" I could downsize and pay less. I asked if I could switch it to the smaller room since it was just the two of us now. She quoted me the same price as I was paying for a four-person room so $340 for a two person bedroom. I stated that's the same price as the four person bedroom and she said "well that's the price" I said well that's crazy I guess I'll just keep the four person bedroom , maybe I can find someone to come along to help defray the cost. Thinking that when I arrived and have the conversation with whoever was available that maybe they would work with me by either discounting a room that I didn't need or moving us to a smaller room at a better price because I thought $340 was very steep. The person at the front desk could not do anything for me because they said the hotel is full and that's the price of the large room . I said but I tried to get a smaller room and it wasn't full at the time that I asked and was told it was the same price? She could not help me . Then, as I was leaving, the gentleman at the front desk asked how was your stay? I said lovely as always you have a nice place here. Unfortunately I won't be returning, I felt as a return customer they could have done a little something to help me out but they didn't and it was almost 340$for our room for one night for two people. He said nothing ,he didn't even look up from the desk ,didn't say goodbye ,oh I'm sorry that it didn't work out for you, I'm sorry to lose your business... nothing. Our next stay we will try the Hotel Thaxter, or Sailmakers house, both lovely accommodations and close to all the...
