La Orilla Beach House II

Also known as Luquillo Beachfront Retreat on Google.

In February 2020, a group of us rented La Orilla Beach House I (just down the street) for a few nights before a cruise. It was a little outdated, but we loved the outdoor dining/seating areas, pool, hot tub, and being right on the ocean. This year our cruise was cancelled, so we decided to come and stay for an entire week this time (February 2021) but to give Beach House II a try, as it seemed to have better beach access and to be more updated.

We booked nearly 9 months in advance. Somewhere in between, new management took over this property. Upon arrival, we noticed some differences in what we thought we were getting (was provided the prior year, as well as previous reviews). A washer and dryer was not available, nor was a 2nd refrigerator (in the outdoor kitchen). We had 9 people staying for a week. 1 refrigerator was not enough for food and drinks and ice. The kitchen also lacked some basic supplies like a can opener, ice cube trays (refrigerator did not make its own ice), or pot holders, to name a few. When we mentioned to the manager about the washer dryer, he did say his staff would make it available for the next day.

Note: Only one building on the property is available to guests - when looking at provided pictures, pulling in from the street, the right hand side building (1 story) is where the living room, kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms are housed. The 2 story white building on the left only provides a restroom and outdoor kitchen. This outdoor kitchen was of no use to us, being there was no refrigerator or stove/oven. This area housed the grill, we did pull that out a few times for grilling our dinner. This unavailable building was accessed each day by employees doing laundry, bringing in dirty and carrying out clean. I expect that this was the central linen cleaning for all of the Managers properties in the area.

The outdoor seating area left much to be desired. We were on vacation and would have loved to lounge around, kick up our feet on some comfy outdoor couches or loungers. Some of us were looking for loungers to lay in the sun as well. Just cheap plastic chairs.

Rooms were sparse, did the job. Except several of us ended up with bedbug bites. Not everyone or every room, but half of the 9 of us did. A place other that the bed and a TV in each room would be a nice upgrade here.

Good WIFI if you were in range, barley reached outside the main house.

The hot water heater went out one evening, but the Manager quickly sent someone to check it out and had it replaced by breakfast time the next morning.

Several large cockroaches outside that we killed, I did not see any inside. My husband later told me that he saw some in the kitchen and killed them, too, but didn't want to tell me at the time because I would've been grossed out.

All in all, this stay was just okay. Last year our experience was much better. This house has a lot of potential, unused space could provide families with billiard tables, games, etc. Proper closets. Washer and dryer available throughout the stay. Expand the kitchen to utilize unused space. Make outdoor kitchen more usable - especially a refrigerator. Include seating and TVs in rooms, update patio furniture to include outdoor dining table and comfy seating. Oh, and hire an exterminator! The manager could ultimately charge more and make more money with these updates/improvements. The beach was unavailable to do weather, wind, and rip tide warnings. However, for when the water is calm, providing kayaks, body boards, or other beach amenities for families would be...

My husband also reviewed the hotel but the hotel claims we didn’t stay there. We were booked and checked in on Sunday, Feb 16, 2025 and checked out on Monday, Feb 17 2025. We were only offered a credit to return and don’t plan to as this hotel wasn’t what we look for in a vacation spot.

The hotel is quaint and it is true, limited staff. We checked in via online and then did speak with someone to help us get to our room and use the keypad (which was a little challenging). When checking out Monday morning at 10:30am, no one was there but the housekeeper that we saw.

There were no pool towels and no one was there to retrieve them from the front desk, if that is where they are kept.

The room was adequate but wasn’t renovated. Basic bed (hard and loud) with one lamp. We didn’t try the TV.

The hotel is walking distance to a beach access but the beach is not accessible from the hotel property. The walk wasn’t bad and it was relatively safe.

We did see water, coffee bar, and microwave in the lobby.

The hotel halls are tile as are rooms so it could be loud if guests weren’t respectful. Property was in need of repairs - wood rotten on pool deck, rusted AC units that appear old, no AC or fan in bathroom. We know the hotel mentions their work to improve so hopefully one day they can make it nicer and improve the room quality.

The room was clean overall but just older and needs renovating/new furniture and mattresses.

Parking was available onsite.

Disappointed in the hotel monitoring reviews. As someone traveling from North Carolina, the pictures and marketing online didn’t add up to the property as we had hoped.

This may be a great place for some but wasn’t the right fit for our vacation as a couple away from our kids...

I absolutely love this place! We hosted a group retreat here and were able to work with Adianice and Asiria to have our whole team stay in the same location / hotel. They were helpful with updating our bookings and helped us when we wanted to add more nights to our stay. Very communicative and kind throughout the entire process / stay. Once we arrived we were super excited, the water is right there! you can her the waves while you sleep and its so calming. The pool was nice, we would do a few dips before bed. Beach and Kioskos are walking distance, 10-15 depending on your mobility. The rooms were clean and cute, beds comfy, balconies were also nice to have. The view!! Looking over the water while you enjoy a cafe is luxury yall! Had such a great stay! We recevied check-in info day of our stay once our rooms were ready and had no issues checking in, there is a water filling station by the front door and a cooler with ice for your drinks. The rooms had TV and mini fridges which was great! I didnt use the TV but kept by water cool in the fridge. Would stay here again and hope I am able to! I would recommend, it was very quiet and calming stay, the outdoor area is well kept and pretty. Love the decor and plants around the property as well. There is a parking lot across the street if you do drive, we walked or took taxis which was easier for our group. :D Thank you!...

If it were possible to add a star, we would do it without hesitation. The hotel had a very unique and beautiful style, we can tell that the owner has been working hard to improve it. It was clean and quiet, and offers a breathtaking view of the beach (this beach is easily accessible, just a 3 minute walk from the hotel). I highly recommend enjoying a meal or drink in front of that view, wether it is food purchased from the hotel or your own. The pina colada we had at the hotel is the best we’ve had in Puerto Rico so far, and we’ve tried a few ☺️ The owner of the hotel is very kind and helpful. She knows the area very well and can give you good recommendations of places to visit and adresses to eat at. We can’t talk about the hotel without mentioning its sociable and cute cat, Selva. Thank you for the perfect stay, we will definitely come back if we get a chance to visit Puerto Rico again.
