Johnstown is among the American cities with the richest history! This property is wonderful and located in the heart of it. In the character of an old industrial city in the Twenty-first century, metropolitan Johnstown has about 200,000 people within 25 miles of it, but only the poorest 10% actually live in the old city. Indeed, this hotel is centrally located in bustling Richland Township, but about 10 miles from there.
If you aren't from Pennsylvania, visiting the old city is essential, not because it is beautiful (it is pretty run down), but since it is an unvarnished glimpse at how a 19th. century manufacturing town was laid out. At least two open gems though: George's Song Shop on Market Street specializes in old vinyl and is the oldest, continuously operated music store, in the US. (1934). Also, Coney Island Lunch on Clinton Street is delightfully unhealthy (burgers, dogs, and mountains of chili). As with anywhere you go in Johnstown, the staff will do anything for you, and the place is amazingly affordable.
The Incline Plane is the most significant tourist spot in Johnstown, even though it is in a remote location on the other end of town. (About 15 miles from the hotel.) There is little to no lodging anywhere near it. You can usually ride it and even take your vehicle with you from the old city to the Westmont Mountain top. Asiago's Italian Kitchen is at the peak, has panoramic views of the region, is delicious, and quite affordable. Unfortunately, the plane itself has been temporarily closed.
This hotel has been recently rehabbed, and it's obvious. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and the hotel has all common amenities.
As I implied earlier in this review, you have to look pretty hard in Johnstown to find rude, and unhelpful people, and you certainly aren't going to find them among the...
Read moreExcellent Hotel and Staff. I am on a Power Utility contract here in Pennsylvania. I've stayed at this hotel now approaching 50 nights in the last 2 months or so. As is the case with Holiday Inn Express, the value for the money spent is really the best I have found and this hotel is no exception. I have thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Every staff member, from the GM (Melissa) on down, has treated me with the utmost kindness and respect. The front desk crew, Sheryl, Jared, Linda Amanda, Brandon, Cindy, David, have accommodated me in every way possible when needs are addressed. And the responses have been immediate and very positive.
The breakfast crew, Jill and Kelly have been wonderful. They have gone out of their way to let me know when bacon is on the menu for the next morning :). They are sure to ask if there are any needs before shutting breakfast down and will gladly meet any last minute requests.
I don't know all the house keepers but Sophia has been doing a excellent job cleaning my room and is always a joy to see. She gladly will go the extra mile with additional linens if requested and with full service requests....sometimes with short notice she still is happy to do a very thorough cleaning. THANK YOU.
As far as the room, it has one of the more comfortable King beds I have been in for a quite some time. The shower is THE VERY BEST shower in a hotel bathroom I think I may have ever had...with the exception of one of those multi nozzle rain showers in a resort somewhere....this one has FANTSTIC pressure and stream selections.
I will chalk the wonderful daily consistency of treatment and accommodation to excellent leadership and attitude of everyone here. It really is a joy. TAHNK YOU,...
Read moreFriendly staff. Clean. Newer furnishings. Was expecting this Hotel to cater to the business traveler but also expected it to be comfortable to the vacationing traveler. It wasn't comfortable at all to the traveler. Stark, very unwelcoming and cold. 🥶 As in freezing. Thermostat was at 61°. Fan constantly on. Couldnt get to the Thermostat that was positioned in the middle of the wall with a bed against it. Crawling across the bed the only way to access the Thermostat.... not an option for handicapped. 2 queen beds not arranged for couples. One up against the wall so no one could get in on left side of bed. The other bed had half wall up against right side with the rest of that side of bed blocked with furniture. No comfortable chair to relax in. Both chairs were at desk areas. Doors do not block out sound. Had to contend with some rude woman on speaker phone for over 30min right outside the door. Booked online so called twice & asked for a one bed option (more space to navigate for handicapped) & handicap bath. Neither request was granted & there wasn't that many guests when we checked in on a Monday. Breakfast was a joke. We asked it they were back to normal hot breakfast, the front desk person assured us they were. Omelets had to be from the day before! No waffles. No sausage or bacon or eggs. The kicker to it all was that they then charged you to park in their lot! As a guest you have to pay to park! It's not Boston or New York where parking is at a prime....it's outside of Johnstown! We were traveling with another couple and their experience was a bit better but not much. We all learned a lesson. Bye Bye Holiday Inn...
