I'm so glad I came across this hotel. It's newly remodeled. The room was very clean and quiet and came with a refrigerator (no freezer) and microwave. There's no elevator (it's two stories with stairs), so I requested a ground-floor room and they were able to honor that request. ||They are a long block from a nice beach with great sunset views, but be warned you have to walk down several stairs to reach the beach and at the bottom there are some rocks you have to maneuver down to get to the sandy part of the beach. To get to the beach from The Shoal you don't have to cross the busy La Jolla Blvd, unlike the hotel directly across from them on La Jolla Blvd (Holiday Inn Express & Suites). ||There are several restaurants within walking distance (a block or two). We ate at the coffee shop right next door (Cafe Vahik - they serve breakfast and lunch), The Shack Bar & Grill, and the Promiscuous Fork while we were there and also got snacks at the 7-Eleven.||A huge plus for this place is that they let you check out beach gear (umbrellas, chairs, sand toys, and towels) for free. My 8-year-old niece was with me, and she really enjoyed the sand toys. My niece also love the pool and hot tub. The pool isn't that big, but she was thrilled with it, and we saw several other guests enjoying it too.||Parking is also a bargain at $15 a night for the first car (not sure about additional cars because we only had one). The parking lot is small, but they have additional parking in the back. We were there Tuesday-Sunday and never had a problem finding a parking spot in front of the hotel.||Every employee we encountered was very friendly and helpful. The lobby was clean and has free coffee/tea/hot chocolate/filtered cold water and oatmeal packets 24 hours a day. They also sell snacks at the front desk. There's an ice machine outside the front entrance. You can tell they take pride in the cleanliness of the hotel. I noticed the maintenance guy wiping down the front of the building on more than one occasion. ||They have bicycles available. I'm not sure if they charge or not because we didn't use those. ||Before I found this place, I was about to pay at least twice as much at the hotel next to La Jolla Shores. La Jolla Shores is only a short drive from The Shoal, so one day we drove there with our beach supplies that The Shoal loaned us. ||The only negative I experienced wasn't with the hotel itself but with their billing system. I made a reservation for two rooms late one night and the next morning realized I never received a confirmation. I thought maybe I hadn't completed the reservation, but I called the hotel and they found the reservation and emailed the confirmations. Each room had its own confirmation number. When it was time to check in they only sent a link to check in for one of the confirmation numbers, but I called them and they said it would check me in to both rooms. When I checked out, I only received an email receipt for one room (I just now realized this and haven't called to get a copy of the other one yet). As far as I can tell, though, when you call them you get someone at the front desk and not a central reservations line, and they answer calls quickly.||I'm so glad I took a chance on The Shoal. I highly...
Read moreThis is a motel style accommodation situated about 5 minutes walk from Windansea Beach in La Jolla where there is quite a lot of surfing. The Shoal is not in the centre of La Jolla (La Jolla being about 2-2.5 hours drive south of Los Angeles) but not far from La Jolla's centre with a car. There is a well stocked supermarket within walking distance as well as a 7-11. La Jolla is simply lovely, very relaxing, good shops, eateries, access to beaches, good weather and a laid-back atmosphere.||The rooms and bed at the Shoal are very comfortable, great shower pressure in the bathroom and reception staff very pleasant and helpful. There is a nice pool onsite too. I would have liked a long mirror in the bedroom however and the lighting in the bathroom could have been brighter as well as more plentiful in the bedroom. ||Parking onsite s on a first come first served basis at $15 usd per night payable at reception. Alternatively you can park for free on the street near the hotel - but beware of coloured markings on the footpath or curb which are often hard to spot or understand (certainly for me as an Australian I had no idea what they meant or what to look for) - if in doubt don't park there - sadly I got a big parking fine! ||There are no restaurant facilities at the accommodation (they do offer some very basic cereals at reception) but plenty of good eateries within a few minutes' drive. Duke's in La Jolla is really good, as is Queenstown and Marisi (although it's very dimly lit which personally I don't like). A little bit further outside of the centre of La Jolla someone recommended Urban Plates which is very good.||The accommodation is within about 30 minutes' drive of the the wonderful San Diego Zoo, and Bilboa Park, Sea World, and San Diego airport.||Typically for La Jolla this accommodation is not cheap but was one of the better priced accommodation option for the area.||I would recommend...
Read moreThis was my turf time staying at The Shoal and it is by far my favorite hotel in the area thanks to the incredible service by both Cory and Tricia. We did have a bit of a bumpy ride with the rooms this stay. Our first room was not cleaned properly prior to our arrival and had hair left places and there We’re some little black bugs which caused some bites. But, Tricia and Cory jumped right on it , we were comped one nights stay and moved To another room promptly. Our second room was much cleaner and comfortable. But, the AC unit wasn’t cooling and the Filter had not been changed. We were offered another room upstairs but made the decision to wait for the maintenance person to fix the AC the next day. After maintenance came the AC was intermittently cooler even cold but it was extremely loud when cutting off and on throughout the night like helicopter blades in the room that woke us up several times throughout each night. Everything else was great! The beds were comfortable, good linens, and even makeup wipes were provided and beach towels were provided. So, given that the staff had all been so pleasant, comped one night and seemed to do their very best to make sure we were happy and comfortable, we decided not to complain any further. They were far too kind and pleasant. So, we didn’t want to be burdensome. Plus, we were here to be near Windansea Beach. Even though they were at capacity, they went above and beyond to provide an amazing experience! Corey and Tricia are simply amazing and made us feel appreciated and welcomed! My family all loves staying here! The spa was amazing. They did a thorough deep cleaning mid stay and were Extremely helpful and accommodating! I will absolutely be...
