There were rips and holes in the mattress cover. And the other outer sheet had a large possible blood like stain on it( pictured). The rooms themselves are nice enough, it's small but this is San Francisco. One big problem at least in my room was there is an enormously heavy chair that is impossible to pass by without stubbing your toe. The plant in the room is dying and needs to be watered. One of the plants seems to have some spider mites. I guess I would say that my biggest complaint is that the safe isn't even bolted to anything. Somebody could just take the whole thing and all your valuables with it. I will say that the front door man keeps a really good eye and everyone that comes in and out greeting you and welcoming you as you come and go. The elevators are a bit slow even though they have four of them two of them actually work. The location is great, being next to Union Square. I will reserve my decision of the decor since they are under construction while I was here. The large animals on the doors along with the dark theme is a little creepy, but I actually enjoy it more than some of the Marriott or other generic Hotel. Since I got this hotel on a deal I'm not at all concerned, but if I were to have paid 500 or more a night to stay here I don't think that would be acceptable. All in all a very good hotel especially for the location.

The only good thing about this hotel is the location which is pretty central. However: 1. They massively inflated the price due to the per night "resort fee" that is forced upon you. Therefore you should compare the price per night of other hotels in the area including the larger resort fee you'll pay here. The only thing in the resort fee useful to us was the internet... which is usually included at most hotels. So the resort fee was useless for us. Part of the resort fee is a present they give to you upon arrival. Yeah, I don't need another water bottle... 2. They also charge another $4 or $5 per night if you choose to pay with a credit card! 3. Jasper's restaurant / bar is in the bottom of the hotel but there's no easy way to order food up. There is a menu which is out of date and without prices. But to order food they force you to go through a third party mobile app which didn't work for me. 4. There's no tea or coffee making facility in the room. Not even water. 5. They give you ear plugs as a present. So I'm guessing some rooms will be very loud. 6. The quality of the rooms is a little worn. 7. The staff basically never smile and look grumpy. Would I stay there again? NO...

Lovely hotel with amazing service and great rooms - if you're willing to splurge a little. We stayed for a couple of nights over New Year's Eve and absolutely loved our stay at Hotel Spero. Staff was very welcoming and helpful and the service in general was outstanding at the hotel. It doesn't offer the full service that other hotels offer, such as breakfast (food can be purchased at an adjacent bar), but for our purposes the hotel was perfect. We booked the Serenity Suite, which quite honestly proved to be the best choice for us as it was spacious, furnished with cute decoration and a large couch, and generally felt very cozy. It almost felt like we had our own little apartment in downtown SF. The only thing I would want other guests to know is that there are many homeless people around. This is absolutely not the hotel's fault and shouldn't deter you from booking a room at the hotel - you can avoid most of it by spending as little time as possible around Market St. However, this will still ultimately serve as a reminder for the urgent need for policy change at city, state and national level.

I happened to glance at other reviews and was super disappointed that people were not all giving five stars. I feel like having stayed here repeatedly over the past two years plus that I should offer a little bit of corrective insight. The area is just like every other part of San Francisco, where you cross the street on one side it’s not the best but you walk across the street on the other side and it’s amazing. Hotel Spero is diagonal from a very well known high end hotel and if you walk towards union Square, it’s amazing so the person who said that they wanted to go for a walk but they couldn’t, all they had to do is choose a different direction.I walk everywhere around this town, every time I stay here and never had a problem. Now, if you walk the opposite direction, then you head into the tenderloin, which is not known to be the best area however, the hotel sparrow sits right on the edge of it and going in the other direction leads you to Union Square, which has all the brand name stores and everything, it just depends which way you choose to go. The staff which, thankfully everybody recognized is extremely hospitable, are some of the best people that I’ve ever experienced from all the hotels I’ve ever stayed in. They are attentive, pleasant, respectful, kind, and go above and beyond I’ve never encountered a negative experience with any of the staff in my entire two years of staying here. The person who said that the Gym is in the basement, I’m wondering why does that matter? It’s on the lower level why does it matter if it is at the bottom of the hotel or at the top of the hotel? I’m not entirely sure why they felt the need to point that out. There may not be water in room, however on the main floor in the lobby, there is a filtered water system with a ton of cups available that you have access to. And there’s no coffee and tea in the rooms because they serve fresh coffee and tea every morning. I can’t believe someone said Jasper‘s food was gross, I’ve eaten there so many times and every time I’ve been overly satisfied with all my food, Their chicken wings are some of the best wings I’ve ever had. Their soup’s amazing even their Caesar salad is just so delicious and the staff at Jasper‘s is again so incredibly friendly. Someone said that security is minimal. The doors are locked at night. You can’t use your key card to get in. The security has to let you in at night and they don’t allow deliveries or DoorDash or anybody to just come upstairs anybody who walked through the lobby they make sure that they are staying in the hotel and not just trying to access the elevators and also if they access the elevators which they don’t, but if they did, what does that do? They can’t get in your room they can’t have access to you. Other hotels their lobby is unlocked and they may have a key card required to get in the elevator to make it operate, but anybody can just hop in the elevator with someone else who has a key card and go right up the floor. I know I’ve done it. I purposely stay here and refuse to stay at any other hotel every time I’m in San Francisco because I’ve never had a negative experience here and it breaks my heart that other people don’t walk away with the same feeling that I do. It’s also a boutique hotel, the rooms spacious they’re beautifully designed the bathrooms might not be the biggest…some are some are not. But when you stay at a boutique hotel, you’re getting a unique experience. The furniture is unique. it’s high-quality. The beds are comfortable. It’s not your bland, ugly interior room design that so many of the other hotels have. I understand that everybody is entitled to their own opinion however, I couldn’t just let the less than five star reviews deter someone from staying here. It is extremely well priced, and with IHG you know you can earn points for free stays.I feel safe here I feel welcomed. I feel appreciated. I love the rooms you can’t beat it. I felt the need to have to share this because all these people that come here are staying for the first time and one night and who knows what they have going on in their life to cause them to have their perception different but I’ve been staying here for over two years. I’ve come here in a good mood I’ve come here in a bad mood. I’ve come here when I wasn’t feeling well and I’ve come here when I was irritated. They’ve always made me feel welcome at home and have been kind and I think after staying here more than t00 times and having more than 100 positive experiences, hopefully you’ll listen to someone who has a long-term experience and connection with them versus someone who stayed one night and doesn’t...

To note, before i begin my review, 2 stars for service for eventually swapping our room, otherwise no star. 1 star for the quality of both rooms we received. BTW this was a 6-night prepaid trip so the hotel knows I'm not writing for any incentives here. We only expected basic courtesy and didn't receive it. Checked in today. There is nothing for me to wait before writing my review so here goes. Received room 511, upon entering the carpets and bathroom floors were dirty with particles. There were pills on the floor, a usb flash drive on the lamp. I found a housekeeper in the next room and asked if she can help vacuum. She came over and agreed the room was not cleaned. She also found a can in one of the storage unit under the TV. Fridge was dirty. She called someone twice and on loudspeaker a guy was yelling for her to text him and that he can't speak with her in English but she seemed to be talking in Spanish. Meanwhile my husband went down to report at reception with photos. My daughter and i stayed back waiting outside the room for the housekeeper to finish what she was doing. She came to ask us in and spoke in Spanish mainly we think and kept saying no clean. Right before my husband came up with a new key to swap the room, this Asian American man in white shirt and orange pants comes into the room, walks straight in and doesn't acknowledge my daughter and i standing there, no greeting, no introduction.. do you work here? Starts to pull his mobile phone out. We had our belongings still in that room. Then walked back to the front door, My husband arrived. We both said you might want to take that usb stick with you. He just went oh and walked back in the room and started calling someone. We left to the new room. Unprofessional member of staff who needs to be onboarded to deal with guests frontline. New room was dirty too, not only dusty but carpets not cleaned, fridge dirty etc. Informed Hom who gave a courtesy call later. Services are paid for not free so I hope management notices this review and uses this as an opportunity to improve. Also this room has no fancy bedding throw on both beds like the other room so pls don't blame us for that!

Not a 4- star in 2024. Probably in it's early glory days. Families with kids, note that the double room doesn't have a microwave. No coffee or tea in the rooms, but the hotel offers them at the lobby from 7am to self-serve.

Location is good and accessible to union square amenities and key shopping zones. Yes homelessness is an issue and extremely sad but no disturbances. Past that folks we met are all friendly and helpful. City is so diversified and full of vibrant folks, food...

I booked this hotel without realizing it was a non-refundable reservation. As the check-in day approached, one of us couldn’t make it due to medical reasons. I contacted the travel agency (Priceline) and Hotel Spero to inquire about canceling the booking for a full or partial refund, or even changing the date within a one-month frame. But they firmly refused, insisting on ‘no refund’ even if it’s due to medical or whatever reasons.

Reluctantly, I decided to travel alone to avoid losing the money. Upon check-in, the front desk requested a $225 deposit, refundable at checkout. This was understandable.

The hotel, a bit old but classic and situated in a somewhat janky area with many homeless people on the street, gave me an unsafe vibe but okay; I stayed for three nights without daily cleaning, which was odd. The TV wasn’t a smart TV, and watching shows or movies required payment, so I didn’t bother. And no water provided, nothing in the fridge, which was fine. Despite lacking amenities, I was content, as I spent most of my time exploring outdoors and only returned to the hotel to sleep.

However, upon returning home three days after checkout, I discovered a $60 additional charge. When I inquired about the fee, they claimed it was an agreed-upon amenity fee mentioned in the reservation - but I never got explained. Instead, I had to check my digital invoice from Priceline, and I am seeing the fees were being included (which doesn’t explain what this fee is though. So I reached out to Priceline, and they advised they will check withe travel partner (Hotel Spero I assume), but no response yet).

Typically, hotels inform guests about such amenity fees upfront and charge them on the first day during the check-in with an explanation and provide the invoice, which didn’t happen in my case. Moreover, the so-called amenities, per Priceline/Hotel Spero’s explanation, included basic services like business center use, local telephone lines, and Wi-Fi. It’s interesting that these are labeled as amenities, which I’ve never used these anyways except the Wi-Fi. Had I known, I would have used my data with no Wi-Fi or chosen a different hotel with genuine amenities. (Is this a 4-star hotel practice)

I suspect many others have had similar experiences after reading some reviews on Google & other websites, and I can confidently say there are better hotel options available. It seems this hotel operates in a slightly dubious manner when it...
