The Palm Hotel — Hotel in Sonora

This place is awful. The photos on the website are amazingly deceiving. When we arrived we were checked-in my the owner/manager's 12-year old daughter. She was sweet, but 12?? When we walked up the tired carpeted stairs to our bedroom, my son was quick to point out the 20+ year-old analog TV and lamp on the hallway floor that looked like they had been sitting there waiting to be put in a dumpster for months! The temperature outside was pushing 100. Though the A.C. was on in our room when we arrived, it was very warm in the room. We turned the Swamp Cooler up at night. Because the sofa-bed was next to the Swamp Cooler, it blew directly on to my son, and he had to put his sweats and socks on during the night and slept poorly. The landing on the flight of stairs leading down to the parking lot was where I was shocked to see two very large hairballs that looked like they were coughed up by an animal of some kind, along with a dirty ashtray and a table (containing a spent matchstick), that wasn't fit for a garage sale. The fish tank in the lobby was so cloudy, my son and had difficulty making out whether there were live fish inside. The lady that seems to permanently occupy the unit on the bottom, a smoker, asked if my son and i could bring her a cup of coffee from town after dinner. The place had the lingering smell of curry. We had a two-night stay booked. I politely asked Gary, the owner/manager, if I could get a refund for the second night. I also told him about just some of the issues of filth and lack of care for the place. His response was weak, and lacked sincerity. I would bet the place is as filthy as when we departed. Though the place was not fully occupied, he stated that he could not comply, as others may have booked a room, had we not booked ours. Gary wanted my money. He got it. He also got this...

We were VERY disappointed...A waste of our hard earned money..We will never stay there again.I didn't even want to put one star but I cant post this unless I put one in. It was nothing like the website.I am not a picky person but to me this is false advertisement..Everything is outdated NOT "old Victorian" there is no Rose garden to walk through only a few bushes out front.Weeds everywhere that a very nice woman was trying to cut down as we drove up.There was a garbage can in the back corner,where I think you are suppose to be able to sit???full of stagnant water ,bugs and a HORRIFIC stench.I booked this hotel because it says it is a B&B to save money on eating out,and the pictures on their website looked so yummy.There was nothing even resembling the food pictured on their website.There was a runny egg and cheese casserole that was re heating on a hot plate(apparently the oven is broke,no wonder we could not smell any food cooking),2 plates of box made looking umm pastries ???The woman in charge was trying her best though to make things as presentable as she could with what she had.It was awful and then to find out the food is not even cooked on the premises ... oh yes there was even pee on our toilet .The owners of this sad old Victorian need to sell it to someone who cares about these old places and will truly make it a BED & BREAKFAST again as I did see past pictures in a photo album there that looked very nice and well kept(previous owners)......before its to late.Forgot to mention the only way our room had electricity was because there was a lamp plugged in outside our door that I asked about and the woman said its the only way they can get the electricity to work in the room...?????Looked at description of hotel and amenities on different sites,there is no managers reception,no...

While the house is nice, many things are inconvenient. The airconditioning cannot be regulated; we had to call the manager by phone and ask her to turn it off; very cumbersome. Also, it turned out that the airconditioning of our room and the next room are connected. When our neighbors wanted a cool room and we wanted the AC be turned of, there was contradiction impossible to reconcile!!

The booking was confusing: We booked a room for three persons, as announced on the web, we got a reply that the room was booked, and if we wanted another room; but it turned out that the room was not booked but only for two persons. after a few emails bach and forth with a delay of one day between each email, we got a room.

Other impracticalities are that it was impossible to take a shower, because there was only a bathtube, and no way to protect the batroom from getting flooded.
