I am beyond frustrated and disappointed with both Expedia and the Super 8 Motel in Sturgis, SD.
I made a 2-night reservation on August 13, 2024 and cancelled it on December 18, 2024.
I have an email confirmation from Expedia showing the cancellation date.
I even went the extra step and called the Sturgis Super 8 directly to verify my cancellation. The staff confirmed, and I was assured it would be taken care of.
Fast forward almost 8 months later — on my September 2025 credit card statement, I was charged $825.77 for the motel stay I cancelled!
When I contacted Expedia, they shrugged it off and told me there was nothing they could do. When I called the Super 8 Sturgis, I asked to speak with the manager/owner — but was told they weren’t available. I left my name and number and, not surprisingly, no one has ever called me back.
To make matters worse, the cancellation policy in my original Expedia reservation email clearly states:
No charge for cancellations made before 12 a.m. on August 7, 2025.
For cancellations or no-shows after August 7, 2025, only ONE night’s fee plus taxes would apply.
I cancelled in December 2024 — a full eight months BEFORE the deadline — so there should have been no charge at all. Yet, not only did they ignore this, they charged me the entire 2-night stay instead of just one night.
This is a clear violation of their own written policy and an outright scam.
👉 Expedia failed to protect their customer and offered no support. 👉 Super 8 Sturgis charged me nearly $1,000 for a reservation that was cancelled in good faith and per their policy.
I want others to be warned: do not trust Expedia to stand behind you, and think twice before ever booking with Super 8 Sturgis.
I will continue to dispute this charge with my credit card company — but no customer should have to fight this hard to stop from being...
Read moreMy husband and I were visiting Black Hills for the weekend and decided to splurge and get the king suite with the hot tub. We were seriously disappointed with the room. I looked at pics of this room on Expedia and at all the available pics on their website. This looked nothing at all like any of the pics I saw. Instead of the bright, pleasant, tasteful decorated rooms I saw online, our room was rather dark and depressing. The hot tub was a red heart shaped tub in the floor with no handle to help get in and out. It had 2 settings, off and deafening. There is no relaxed conversation happening in this tub. My biggest complaint though was that the room was 2 stories. In order to get to the bedroom you had to go up a narrow spiral staircase. There was zero warning of this anywhere I looked before booking. My husband and I are old and pudgy and I have some spinal problems that make regular stairs challenging at times. The cherry on top was the dead bugs in the skylight. I can appreciate that its probably a pain to clean, but it was kinda gross to stare up at. We ended up leaving the evening of the 2nd night, at our own expense, cause we just couldn't deal with the stairs again.
Aside from that I can say that the room was clean, dead bugs aside. The bed was very comfortable. The common areas were very clean and the clerks that I interacted with were very warm and friendly. If you're a younger couple looking for a romantic room this might be perfect for you. There's floor to ceiling mirrors around the tub and the shower is big enough for 2. I just wish there had been some more detailed information about the room...
Read moreI've been staying at this location for at least 10 years for the Rally. The new owners are horrible and need extensive training on how to operate a hotel. The previous owners were awesome and made it an awesome experience. There is nobody at the front desk at night and I personally witnessed this every night. Breakfast in the morning was cold even thought it advertised hot breakfast. Nobody tended to the breakfast area unless it was brought to the the attention then and only then they would restock the breakfast items. I personally watch manager (Shaw) heat the sausages and eggs for a minimal amount of time in the microwave and then put them into the warmer still cold they are lucky someone didn't get food poisoning. I have photos of front Shaw sleeping at the counter during breakfast. I paid $415 dollars a night for the room and this is the service you get unacceptable. Also during the rally people would stop and get rooms for as low as $250 a night and I'm paying $415 because I booked ahead of time how is that fair. The cleaning staff sleep in the basement in a conference room on the floor and then party all night come back to the hotel all drunk and staggering again unacceptable. This place used to be a blast to stay at for the Rally but the new management really needs some extensive training or needs to be replaced with someone that cares for the customer. Its ridiculous and unprofessional how this place is being operated and needs to be addressed...
