THE BEST PLACE TO START YOUR VIETNAM TRIP! We've stayed at Hanowood homestay twice now - the first time in Dec/Jan when we booked one of the rooms with a shared bathroom, and the second time this month, when we came back to Hanoi with my parents, this time booking two rooms with ensuite bathrooms. Both times were excellent. Though old (which is why you're in the French Quarter in the first place - for the old buildings!) the rooms are exceptionally clean and comfortable, and at an unbeatable price for Hanoi. Hanowood homestay is located off the main road, in an area which is quiet and safe, but also has the advantage of being close to many excellent cafes and restaurants, and in walking distance to major Hanoi attractions. The service is what really brought us back to Hanowood though. Jack, Tony and Stella are fantastic hosts, so friendly and responsive. They really put the "home" in homestay, greeting us with cups of tea, recommending places to visit, providing us with a list of suggested restaurants (all of which have their own interesting histories and specialities), and they do a superb job of providing services to tourists. You really couldn't ask for a better place to start your Hanoi journey. After booking with Hanowood, you can organise an airport pickup, buy a SIM card from your hosts, and arrange all tours through them, as they are a travel agency too. It really is a one-stop shop, allowing you a hassle-free arrival, which is especially helpful if this is your first time to Vietnam. While we are usually skeptical of places that offer so many services, we found that we couldn't get a better deal elsewhere - the team at Hanowood regularly negotiated better prices for every tour than we found anywhere else, and got us deals far below the prices you'd pay booking direct. We were so impressed when we booked a day trip for two to Ha Long Bay at the beginning of the year that we booked a longer cruise and another tour through them for all four of us during our second stay. We were especially happy to hear Stella's recommendations about the Ninh Binh area since her family comes from the region. The rooms have work surfaces and the wifi is reliable enough to use for work or study. Hanowood is also home to unexpected extras - a free laundry service if you book tours with them, and on two occasions, we were treated to delicious Banh Mi breakfasts during our two-week stay. The staff are always happy to see you and organise everything so quickly, responding to messages night and day. We will always stay at Hanowood homestay if we come back to Hanoi in future, and we couldn't think of a better place for newcomers to Vietnam to start their journey. Cảm ơn Stella,...

This is the only 1* rating I am giving in Vietnam. Owner requested I don't write a review, more reasons to write one.

It's called a homestay but there was no staff/ reception/ lobby. On the phone I was assured that my bag will be safe if I kept it outside the room on top floor (the guest didnot check out yet).

Owner asked me if I can check in at 5pm, that there will be construction noise, I said no I can't and he changed his story and apologized that he mistakingly asked me (?). There was noise till 5 pm. And till 9 pm (washing machine next to room), and till 12 am (some pipe/ regulator). I was texting/ complaining all day. Owner even asked me not to compare to "5 * hotel rooms". I was comparing to other $14 rooms I've booked in my life, not 5 star rooms.

The bed is big and comfortable. Iron works. But the room was not clean. There were some hair, dirt, smelt like mold. One towel had a smell too. The whole place is just run down and looks very cheap. I didn't complain about this to owner, my one issue was noise.

Few personal belongings did go missing. I informed him as soon as I noticed but told him I'm checking with the last place I stayed at (it was in a temple and I remembered packing everything).

Instead of being concerned, owner got defensive and asking what evidence do you have. There was no staff or cameras or lockers, they don't have any facilities. His attitude changed completely from business guy to a jerk.

I wanted to pay and check out, on the phone said he is too busy, to leave the money on the table and go. He gave me a discount, because I didn't have change, not because of anything else. By now I would have expected a much lower price just for the inconvenience but I didn't ask and he didn't offer.

To the owner- You asked if I will report you, I won't , if anything please improve your "homestay", show...

The toilet seat and the walls were super dirty with someone's vomit all over it!! the room was also a mess... Previous guest's makeup removal pads, hairs, small plastics and breadcrumbs (of course with many ants) all over the place!! I reported this straight away. The lady at the reception apologised (at least) but she refused to swap the room for us. Finally a cleaner came and "cleaned" the toilet with a toilet brush and just water!! She only went to find a kind of a detergent after I asked for it. I was shocked by the whole situation. I have been few months travelling around Asia and this place was, for sure, the worst!! (Also a crazy amount of mosquitoes inside and on the corridor)
