We loved our time in Sa Pa - massive Thank you to Sue and family who helped make this a wonderful experience for us!
Sue arranged a pickup for us from the town centre and we got a late dinner on our arrival - we asked for the dinner and really appreciated this following our bus journey.
I got a basic room and had 2 wonderful nights of sleep with the mountain fresh air and the sound of wildlife. We're really glad that we made the decision to stay 30minutes or so from the town centre in a proper local Hmong homestay - there are generations of families, dogs, ducks, chickens, goats, water buffalos, paddy fields and a cat
The lodgings have everything we needed and provided spots where you could be a part of the travelling community or break away to read.
There is a choice of two options at breakfast (i) noodle soup or (ii) pancakes. coffee and tea are also available.
We spent 1.5 days trekking with wonderful Sue - we arranged this upon our arrival. Water and lunch are provided. The treks were varied, and the views were spectacular. Sue gave us a good summary of local traditions, dress, different local tribes, celebrations and how things have changed over time. We saw how traditional fabrics were made and colours chosen. We were also invited to join a couple of local celebrations with the community being warm and friendly to guests. A couple of other Hmong local ladies joined us along some of the trek and had some scarf options and other bits to purchase.
The views at our lunch spots were equally as spectacular with one, a very local restaurant, looking onto rolling paddy fields with a variety of animals roaming. The lunches were flavourful and vegetarian options were available.
Sue organised everything perfectly - one example of this was that we had a coach booked to take us back to Hanoi booked at 2.30pm but wanted to maximise our day by going for a trek in the morning. She called the coach company on our request to double check the details were correct due to an error in the confirmation email. We checked out, left our luggage at the homestay and went on the organised trek in the morning. Given we were pressed for time, Sue called the restaurant where we were due to have lunch ahead of time to place an order which arrived shortly after our arrival. She had also organised a short motorcycle ride to take us from the restaurant to meet her husband (taxi) who had our luggage and took us to the coach station in good time. Everything is relaxed but gets done, great combination.

Read more12 months now since our Trekking Tour from Sapa, with Sue as our Tour Leader Extraordinaire!! What an amazing experience we had. I’m healthy and active, in my mid 50’s. This was a fabulous trek - not for the feint hearted!! Through gorgeous villages with beautiful locals. Sue was able to assist whenever needed. She met us in town and had our luggage (overnight bags) picked up so we didn’t need to carry them. The paths were sometimes narrow and slippery, uneven surface but Sue supported us through these points.
Then there was our Homestay, at Sue’s home with her beautiful family - husband, children (including an adopted infant) and grandchildren. The accommodations were AMAZING to say the least. A large room with a wonderful bathroom with shower and toilet, an extra-comfortable bed, fan etc. ✅
Then the food - so much food! A huge kitchen - so fun watching a meal being prepared for us tourists / foreigners. Delicious, mouth watering, YUMMO!!
Sue’s village is gorgeous. She is VERY knowledgeable about her village and people, about her Country. She is keen to know about her guests and their lives. Such a lovely, welcoming person. A strong woman.
Highly...
