Cute little cake shop, but I’ve bought two cakes here that were horrible. The treats from the display case are delicious, and the coffee and fresh juices are good, but both cakes I’ve had were awful. First cake I had was one from the display case that my boyfriend got for my birthday, just a basic chocolate cake with some cute decorations. But the taste and consistency was horrible. Incredibly dense, crumbly, and dry. It was embarrassing sharing this $50 cake with our friends, and seeing the look of disgust on everyone’s face when they took a bite. We thought maybe it was a one time mess up, or maybe it had been sitting for a while in the display case, no big deal. I then went and custom ordered a cake for my boyfriend’s birthday a month later. A small, plain carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. I assumed that ordering a custom cake would mean better quality than one from the display case. I was wrong. It wasn’t quite as dense as the chocolate cake, but more dense than a good cake should be. Dense, dry, and crumbly yet again. We followed the instructions on the box for both cakes and they were still horrible. And embarrassing yet again to share a bad cake with the same friends. Even more embarrassing and frustrating that it was a custom order and it was still so bad. I feel as though I could’ve gotten a better cake from Woolies. Was trying to order a nice cake for a special occasion, but definitely will not be ordering a cake from...
Read moreWe drove past The Hungry Hummingbird earlier in the week and were immediately enticed by their 'best ever' French vanilla slice advertising. We're always up for a decent attempt, so decided to stop in and judge for ourselves.
Unfortunately, when we walked in we were notified that the French vanilla slices were completely sold out (usually a good sign) and that we could call ahead and reserve some another day.
So, today was that day! We called early and locked in two slices for PM collection. They were ready as promised when we arrived, and we drove to the lagoon to chill out and eat them there.
I'm very pleased to say The Hungry Hummingbird does indeed make an impressive French vanilla slice. Held between two exceptionally flaky, puffy pastry sheets sat deliciously light and creamy custard filling. Icing was thankfully absent, replaced by a sensible sprinkling of icing sugar (nothing worse than biting through an inch of solid icing every time).
Overall, although I cannot comment on their coffee or cakes, I am more than happy to offer 5 stars based on the product and service received. Alas, as it will take 20+ hours of driving to buy my next one, they will remain in my life as one very satisfying holiday memory. 😊
PS.......please excuse the photo, it was a token gesture after we'd already ripped the other from the box. Made it look messier than...
Read moreI initially had a quick response from here when I first enquired, but after that I didn’t hear back for over two weeks. I followed up twice via text, called, and even reached out on Instagram before eventually placing an order online just so I could get a confirmation.
Once the order was finally confirmed, everything seemed fine - but when we arrived to collect the cake, there was some confusion. They tried to tell my husband that I had booked for the day after the date I had actually booked and received a confirmation email for. It was a really awkward and disappointing moment, especially after the communication delays.
I’d also mentioned in my messages that I wanted the cake to be blue (and the photo of a similar design online appeared blue), but it ended up being more of a purple tone. Not a huge issue, but one of those finer details that wasn’t quite right.
The cake itself was beautiful and tasted lovely and was GF / Coeliac friendly but overall the experience just wasn’t as smooth or enjoyable as I’d hoped. A bit more care with communication and attention to detail would have made a...
