The staff at Cairns Botanic Gardens deserve special commendation for their dedication and knowledge. Their passion for horticulture was evident as they shared insightful information about the different plant species, their origins, and their significance in the ecosystem. Read more🌳🦋🦎 Beautifully maintained lush garden trails and tropical enclosure housing precious subterranean plant species and biodiversity including colourful butterflies and ground dwelling insects and lizards. Native Australian bush turkey and water fowl roam free along with a large variety of birds, reptiles, frogs and insects, including stunning double winged dragon fly and blue damsel fly. There is a cafeteria and numerous resting spots but ensure to take some water as (naturally) the walk can be quite humid. Don't forget to venture across the road for a stroll along the boardwalk trails to experience the established rainforest eco system and nearby river. (Tip: Pre apply insect repellent before entry if you're pre disposed to sandfly, midge or mosquito bites. Do not spray repellent once inside the gardens due to potential toxicity to wildlife.) Be aware that visiting during the summer period is not for the faint hearted or those affected by heat and high humidity. Not to discourage but probably best to visit very early in the morning or during the moderate winter season. Absolutely beautiful and educational site to visit when in Cairns. Entry is free and Cairns Taxi's will drop off and pick up should you not have transport. Also please don't forget to take your rubbish with you and use the bins provided 👍. Staff and volunteers do a terrific job of maintaining the park with love and pride. Highly recommend a visit...
Read moreAbsolutely beautiful. A must-see for any nature lover. Great display of rainforest trees, plants, and flowers.
Very easy to walk through different areas, plenty of informative signage - perhaps the only improvement could be on directional signage, some of it completely faded or missing the usefully "you are here" marker.
The garden are free to enter, and easily accessible by several bus lines.
There are two cafés on site, I tried the Tank 40 Café for yummy salad and fresh juice, right next to the Vsitor Centre.
Definitely recommend the botanic Gardens, I visited on a hot wet season day yet you can feel how much cooler it is to walk under the trees.
Perhaps my only suggestion would be some information, a display maybe, about the fauna that lives (or lived) in the various environments mentioned throughout the gardens.
The gardens are big enough to keep you walking for at least a couple of hours. Don't forget to stop by the conservatory, then just lie down on the lawn under the shade of one of the giant trees, very relaxing.
A great way to get a good dose of nature in our busy...
