I came here today and saw a four pack of coconut drinks priced at $3. These drinks are usually sold individually at other Asian grocery stores, so I assumed this was just bulk packaging, like 1.5L x6 Coles water or beer packs where you can take one bottle from the pack.
There were two $3 price tags right next to the pack, which made it very confusing and seemed to confirm that they were sold individually. So I opened the pack and took two.
When I went to pay, the staff member was upset that I had opened the pack, which I completely understand, but instead of calmly explaining, she lectured me for nearly five minutes, loudly scolding me in front of others.
Even after I apologized and explained my misunderstanding, she kept repeating that I “should have read the writing” under the price tag. Realistically, customers rely on clear shelf placement and visible pricing and two identical $3 labels side by side are bound to cause confusion. It’s not reasonable to expect people to stop and read every line of fine print while shopping.
She then made a personal remark, “You’re a pretty girl but this behavior is ugly” which felt humiliating and completely unprofessional. She also kept ordering me to “go bring the other two bottles.” My partner brought them over to end the situation, but she continued lecturing me, which showed there was no point to the demand and it felt unnecessary and controlling.
Looking back, I regret even staying through the whole lecture and purchasing anything from this shop. I should have just walked out and given up trying to explain myself. It was just an honest mistake and no customer deserves to be treated like that.
A polite, clear explanation would have been enough. Instead, I left feeling embarrassed, disrespected and so shocked by how aggressively this was handled. Very poor customer service and extremely...
Read moreWarning: Consume all your fresh food within 24 hours otherwise Asian Food Store does not accept liability for spoiled food. We have been frequent customers of Asian Food Store and have not previously had any ongoing issues with food spoilage. However we purchased some fruit on Sunday 4th June and opening these 2 days later on 6th June, discovered that not only one, but two (of two) fruits were rotten from the centre and this was not something that could have been discernible from the outside.
Upon immediate discovery, we proceeded to return back to the store on the 6th June to raise it to management’s attention but the immediate response was that this was our fault for not consuming the fruit within 24 hours, alleging that this was our fault. Despite prepared to show our bank account statement that a purchase was made here on the 4th, the manager insisted on an actual receipt to confirm that we were not lying. In the absence of this, she offered the produce manager to call the next day to defend their position and their insistence that there were no issues with their supply chain.
We are not trying to say that there are permanent issues with Asian Food Store’s supply chain and produce, and understand that there is a degree of reasonableness here as a retailer cannot be expected to replace fresh food at every customer’s whim but the truth is that there was an issue here and staff should not merely blame the consumer.
It would have been far easier to acknowledge and accept that this was a once-off supply issue, apologise and make up for what is a straight forward issue. However, the staff on duty were not willing to accept this as an issue, and rather blame the issue on the consumer for not consuming said fruit...
