This post is for future students of UofT, not the patients.
I graduated from UofT in the last few years, and I wanted to give an honest review of the quality of education at UofT:
The school is commendable for theory, and there is a good chance you can make connections and get into specialty programs because they prioritize research.
However, in terms of clinical training, the school is subpar! Here are the issues I encountered in various departments:
Perio department: They force dental students to spend half of their time in the clinic doing cleaning, a job that most dentists rarely do after graduation. It feels like the school takes money from students and makes them do tasks that are not valuable for their future careers. Oral surgery: They intentionally restrict opportunities to learn surgical extractions, leaving you unable to perform them as a general dentist after graduation. Instead, you'll end up referring everything to them. But, in reality, with proper training, GPs can handle all surgical exos, even wisdom teeth. Endo: The course material and exams have remained unchanged for many years, and the number of endo cases you get to work on is laughable. You'll likely graduate with minimal endodontic experience. Pediatric department: During my two-year pediatric rotation, I didn't have the chance to perform any restorations (filling or crown) for kids. The faculty is located in downtown Toronto, a city with millions of kids, yet they fail to attract patients due to their lack of marketing efforts. Oral Diagnosis: This is where you get new patients, but the process of patient assignment is entirely random. Some students may get lucky with 12 crown cases while others get only one. The school doesn't bother to screen patients based on students' clinical needs before making assignments. If you ask graduates from many years ago, you'll find that the school has hardly changed. Why? Because people in the faculty, except for the Dean, have high-paid, secure jobs, and they never get fired. The program directors in perio, oral diagnosis, endo, etc., have held their positions for decades. Even the manager of undergraduate clinics, Dr. P, has been there for 12 years and shows no intention of leaving.
UofT dental alumni should be more honest about their feedback regarding the school to future prospective students so they can make informed decisions about their future.
Now, looking back two years after my graduation, I can confidently say that UofT is a disappointing school for general dentists. You will primarily learn how to do cleanings and fillings.
FYI: This is not my real...
Read moreBetter to save your money and go to a real dentist who has the training and the experience. I've had several of the "professors" not wearing masks, touching chairs and then putting their hands in your mouth. Not being able to diagnose gum problems until I found it on Google and then suddenly they were able to diagnose. But the best was the cheap crown I had done, the student put on 13 temporary crowns over a two and a half week period, some crumbled before I even left the chair, finally she got one to stay on partially, but I couldn't get an appointment for two weeks, in the meantime I had to find another dentist to fill it in where it was breaking apart. When I got this gold crown, they sent it downstairs to have it "polished" the thing came back almost as flat as a frisbee. I had to go to another real dentist and have it reshaped, she also ground down the tooth above the crown and took too much off ruining my bite. I will have this thing removed at some point and pay the full $1,000 for a real crown. All they are doing is pushing these students through so they graduate, the professors themselves are not any better at diagnostics. To have your teeth cleaned can take months, because they just do a small area each time and it takes hours to finish. Don't waste your time or your money. And the front desk reception people are so bloody rude, you can't believe...
Read more.. The clinics are well if you go for cleaning. Otherwise it is waste of time ,energy, money . Because of repeated visits and exams. I am patient of faculty for 4 years. I have no good experience for making crown. This year I accepted the recommendation of the student for crowning of one my tooth which has been root canal before. I made mistake to accept. One single crown took 6 sessions. Only three session for impression. Each time the student and instructor who was only talkative done impression ,they sent to lab and returned.. I was engaged in 4 weeks for only impression. I complained to Dean of Faculty and Director of Clinic. Still nothing. !!I should say priority here is teaching to new dentistry students then treatment. The director of clinic in reply to my email for complain for treatment procedure and repeated mistakes told me that """"the Faculty of Dentistry is an educational institution and sometimes students are challenged by procedures they are relatively new to performing on live patients""" This director called the patients as LIVE patients. It seems the students have been working on dead bodies and now they are excited on working with Live patients.!! It seems the patients are subjects for testing on them and making...
