La decisión de construir el monumento se tomó en 1919 y se abrió un concurso a finales de 1920. De alrededor de cuarenta presentaciones, el jurado seleccionó el proyecto de Camille Raynaud, por delante de los de Henri-Raphaël Moncassin y André Abbal; la ciudad de Toulouse, sin embargo, decide asociar a los tres autores en la realización final, bajo la supervisión del arquitecto Léon Jaussely. La obra no se terminó hasta 1928, y los bajorrelieves de Raynaud no se terminaron definitivamente hasta 1931. El costo del monumento ascendió a 1.349.540 francos. El monumento a los caídos está catalogado como monumento histórico el 18 de octubre de 2018. Forma parte de un conjunto de 42 monumentos a los muertos en la región de Occitania protegidos hasta la fecha por su valor arquitectónico, artístico o histórico (como el arquero de Heracles y el monumento a los muertos en los distritos de Bayard, Matabiau, Concorde y Chalets, también en Toulouse).
