Ā Ā Ā Read moreShantilal Mithaiwala a name that I can proudly say that I have grown up with.
A small sweet and savory shop ( mainly serving Gujarati and North Indian items ) in the town of Mattancherry in west Kochi ( Kerala ) you can locate it just by its name. This tiny shop would hardly accommodate about 20 persons in seating, but at any given moment of time you can find about triple the amount of customers in the shop which itself is the evidence of its loyalty of repeat customers. As many would complain it is difficult to get attention of the staff I would advise for a little patience which would be much more rewarding once you had the food.
Apart from the food they are very famous for their Masala Chai ( Tea ) and Badam Milk ( Almond flavoured Milk ) which one should not miss. The assortment of items sold is vast but some must try would be Kachori, Bhajji, Pakvada, Jelebi, Kala Jamun, Gathiya, Aloo Bonda to name some. Another must have is Poori Bhaji but this is served only in the mornings by about 9 to 11 am.
They are open weekdays from 8.30 am to 9 pm except for Sundays when they close by noon. Mondayās they usually do not serve the Masala Chai ( Tea ). If you are reaching the shop by a car be advised that it could be difficult to park right next to it.
I would definitely suggest as the go to place for a quick bite if you are in Mattancherry (...

I have been coming here for at least 7 years now, whenever I visit Cochin. There poori bhajji for morning breakfast is good. It goes without saying that their dhoklas are simply awesome. So are snacks like kachoris, bhajis that you get in the evening. One snack that I felt didn't stand the test of time is Samosas. It isn't as good as it used to be. Tea and milk is must from here. Rating 5 The sweets are rather too sugary, rather I don't know how else to put it. I'm not a sweet fan of theirs. Rating 2.5 It isn't like a normal coffee shop, where you can relax and take your sweet time. It is mostly crowded and at times chaotic. When you go to have snacks here in the evening, what you get is confluence of cultures. You can see a Malayalee conversing in Tulu, a Gujarati talking Tamil in Malayalam accent, and so on. I think this is what makes it a great place to hangout. Rating 5 Does not have a parking structure or a lot. Overall rating is...
