Ubud Traditional Spa — Local services in Pulau Bali

I messaged them at 1:10 PM but didn’t get a response. I called, but no one picked up. At 5:52 PM, they finally replied, saying the time I wanted wasn’t available. They didn’t suggest another time or date.

At 6:20 PM, I asked if it was possible to book for a different date or time. It’s been a day, and there’s still no response. They’re not answering calls either.

Update: Following up on my review I’d like to add more details. They only responded to me after I posted my review. It turns out they ignored me because, according to them, I canceled my appointment three times. In reality I only canceled twice. On top of that I’d been a regular customer visiting them weekly from mid-October to the end of November without missing a single session. It’s surprising that two cancellations were enough for them to ignore me.

Eventually they asked me to pay a 200 000 deposit which I paid right away. I wouldn’t have minded paying earlier if they had asked but no one ever mentioned it before.

After that they started pressuring me to delete my review in a very pushy way. They said since they gave me what I wanted I now had to give them what they wanted by removing my review. I told them I would consider deleting it after my massage on Monday if I was satisfied with the service. But they insisted I delete it immediately, saying they weren’t willing to wait until Monday. This made me feel uncomfortable and pressured. I didn’t like how they were setting conditions for me especially since my review was based entirely on facts.

In the end I decided I didn’t want to go there anymore because the whole interaction left me with a bad impression. I let them keep my 200 000 deposit “to soothe their grudge” and walked away feeling like I wasted my money and energy.

Here’s my conclusion: I really like the therapist Apri — she’s excellent at what she does. But the service and the way they treat their clients feel unprofessional and immature. The exaggeration about the number of appointments I canceled despite my regular visits was also strange.

So if good service matters to you I wouldn’t recommend this place. But if you don’t care about service and just want a good massage Apri is...

Two hour couples massage was not relaxing. It started with a very quick foot rub and then a quite lazy massage with repetitive movements and very little stretching. The last 5 minutes was a light graze of my neck. I had to ask for the masseuse to literally do anything else. Then a scrub was put on my body - not rubbed in but put on our bodies and a thin sheet placed over us. I started shivering from cold immediately and was told to “wait a minute” after I said I was cold. Minutes later, I was still cold and said so. I was told the air conditioner had been turned off after I said I was cold and I had to ask for a blanket. I can’t believe the “scrub” Is for you to lay there for 45 minutes with a cold mixture on you until is it picked off. While laying there, I was not only cold but couldn’t relax because I heard plastic bags behind me because they were setting up the bath. Then we were told to shower together to rinse off the remaining scrub and during the shower the masseuses stayed in the room cleaning and chatting. We couldn’t even leave the shower when ready because they weren’t finished cleaning the room. We got in the tub which was set up beautifully but quickly realized it was full of worms. One was crawling on my arm and then I saw several in the flower petals we were already laying in. Overall, I think we were likely the last appointment of the night and the whole experience felt rushed and a bit lazy. We were in our car home before the 2 hour time was up and realized then that we were not given a 2 hour experience - even with the long shower that was not supposed to be included in the time.

Update: the spa contacted me and expressed thanks for the honest review. They also said they plan to make improvements...

This spa is incredible! My wife and I had a 90 minute couples massage and it was professional, attentive, therapeutic, and enjoyable. From start to finish, the Ubud Traditional Spa took great care of us. We were picked up at our accommodation, had a welcome drink and chilled face towel in a lovely setting, we picked our choice of massage oil and had every step of the process explained in detail.

The treatment room is huge and well appointed with a shower, wardrobe, towels, sarongs, sandals, a tub and even disposable under garments. There are lovely flowers and plants in the room and everything is spotless.

Our therapists, Lusi and intan, were attentive, professional, skilled, caring, and thoughtful. They were as engaging as we wanted them to be and frequently checked in to see how we were doing and asking about the pressure. The massage started with a foot bath and foot scrub and then we were positioned on our very comfortable massage tables for an incredible massage (probably the best I have ever had)!

After the massage we had a lovely cup of tea and were then returned to our villa by an excellent driver. All of the staff, including the people who took our booking, to the front desk team, the drivers, and of coarse our therapists. Lusi and intan, provided exceptional service that was both professional and warm.
