I watched the Four Rivers production of Amongst Men at the Wexford Arts Centre last Friday, on Good Friday. I have been to plays and musical performances, but none since 2020 because of the pandemic. I was very glad to be back after all that time. Amongst Men was a masterpiece. The title for the play, of course, was a twist on John McGahern's novel, Amongst Women. And it was perfect, because it was a meditation on the same historical terrain. The play was the interaction between just four actors, four characters representing all the people who were present at the birth, and also living through the first decades, of the new Irish republic. The four filled the atmosphere with a little bit of comedy, a lot of tragedy, much passion and some anger and frustration. The audience, myself included, were completely drawn into the story, with feeling. Hats off to director Deirdre Dwyer and the play's author, Eoghan Rua Finn. A standing ovation for everyone who had a hand in this production. And a special thank you to everyone at Wexford Arts Centre.
