Let me wax poetic about the many ways Mizzica went to extreme lengths to make me a happy customer: back in September 2024, we stumbled upon Mizzica's storefront in Catania. It was simply gorgeous with beautiful artifacts and mementos of Sicily and Catania. As a fierce Catanian-American, every object at Mizzica evoked a tear in my eye. The forms, colors and shapes of the handcrafts reminded me of grandparents receiving dusty packages of handiwork sent from family on that beautiful island. Steve really loved some beautifully crafted "Cuore" that were in Mizzica's window. I dissuaded him from purchasing these pieces : my plan was to return a little later and purchase them for him as a gift. It turned out I could not return to make the purchase and we spent the next few days looking for something similar elsewhere in Sicily. We had no luck and Steve was so sad to not have these artifacts to take home. When we got back home, I wrote Daniela at Mizzica and asked her to mail me some of these ceramics. She wrote back immediately. She warned me that shipping would be insanely expensive ( as did every other shopkeeper in Sicily). Indeed the cost of shipping would cost 5X more than the price of the actual artwork. Daniela advised that I ask a friend or family member make the purchase for me at her store . Then my friend could mail me the objects privately for much less than Mizzica would have to charge. I was not in a position to ask for this favor, so I spent several weeks agonizing over the shipping price. I finally decided to ask Mizzica to ship the ceramics to me. As luck would have it, by the time I made this decision, the pieces Steve loved were sold out, and there were no more available. So with my consent, Daniela asked the artisans to make a set of new pieces for us. This was a labor and time intensive project and took 6 weeks to complete. Mind you, up until this point, all Daniela's and the artisans' hard work was done in good faith. I had made no deposits, no down payemts: just requests. Once the ceramics arrived at Mizzica, Daniela sent photos to the pieces to ask if I was happy with them. Only then did she produce a bill. She fostered me through every step of paying for them ( who knew it was so hard to make a purchase from the US in Euros ??). she then lovingly wrapped each piece in tons of bubble wrap, batting and more, and insulated the entire box for shipping. The ceramics arrived in just a few days, looking resplendent. I just unpacked the box today and was wowed with just how beautiful the Cuore are. The "trinacria" is gorgeous and the smiling "sole siciliano" is beaming down at us on a dreary Boston day. My aching Sicilian American heart feels renewed today. Steve is thrilled to pieces with the ceramics. If you have a chance, get to Mizzica! You will love their wares. And give Daniela a big hug of...
