The presence of a Roman settlement has not been definitely proven. The burgh, known as Pescino, was devastated by Rothari in 641 and by the Saracens in the 10th century. Later it was a fief of the Fieschi family until 1229, when it was acquired by the Republic of Genoa.

In 1432 it was attacked by the fleet of Venice and in 1549, together with Rapallo, by that of Turgut.

In 1813, under the Napoleonic domination, the two burghs of Pescino and Corte were unified as Porto Napoleone. Two years later it was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia as the commune of Santa Margherita Ligure. In 1861 it became part of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy.

Connected by rail in the 20th century, Santa Margherita became a renowned tourist resort after World War II.

Castello di Santa Margherita Ligure, built by the Republic of Genoa in 1550 as defence against the increasing attacks of North African pirates. It was designed by the same architect of the Castle of Rapallo. After World War I it was restored and entitled to the Italian victims of that conflict. Basilica of St. Margaret of Antiochia, built from 1658 on the remains of a 13th-century church. Abbazia della Cervara, a historically relevant abbey on the road to Portofino. Villa Durazzo complex, including two patrician villas, a 16th-century castle and...

We are waiting at platform 3 for our train, they announce it has changed to platform 1. We go there with other passengers. At given time we see our train at platform 3!!! We run and of course train leaves without waiting. We had connection missed because of that too and our whole day schedule! Went to ticket lady to ask what in the world was this and what do we do now. She shrugged her shoulders and said "just take a next one"... wow, how will it compensate our whole day of activities?! How tourist friendly is this? And not even an apology....

Close to the port of S. Margherita Ligure. It takes five minutes by walk. There is a bar called the Buffet Stazione in the station. This bar also is left-luggage office.🎒🎒. You should leave your bags as a deposit here. We missed the train at 9 p.m. There is no officer after 8 p.m., probably🤔. You should find the departure times by looking at lists. The station is so old. Finally, the public toilets are unclean. ( T-N...

The presence of the old architecture makes the place more attractive! But unfortunately after all, the train companies (Trenitalia), make your experience so bad. Another thing, when you’re about to take a train, look at the apps like Trainline or the train company’s app.

Entry point for the famous Portofino bay (part of the rich and famus circuit including Monaco and Nice). Several beaches and luxurious houses lay along a very narrow road, so my advice is to take a walk along the beach and enjoy the view.
