Beautiful small church, not far from the Rialto bridge in the sestiere Cannaregio. Folklore says that this church, precisely because of loneliness and protection from prying eyes, was chosen by Giacomo Casanova as a script for the exchange of communication of love letters between him and the mysterious nun with the initials MM. The church of San Canziano or Canciano is one of the oldest in the city. The church was supposedly founded in 864 when citizens from the mainland town of Aquileia fled to the lagoon islands of Venice to avoid the barbarian hordes. It was one of the churches under the jurisdiction of the patriarch of Grado who lived in Venice. It is dedicated to Canzio, Canziano, and Canzianilla, two brothers and a sister who were martyred for their faith at Aquileia. The facade was built in 1707 by Antonio Gaspari. The central part, surmounted by a triangular tympanum, is flanked on the sides by two horizontal crowning wings. The interior maintains the basilica layout with three naves. On the entrance wall there is the eighteenth-century organ, on the choir loft designed by Giorgio Massari (1762). To admire are the two organ doors depicting San Canziano and San Massimo by Giovanni Contarini, a disciple of Titian (16th century). On the sides there are four altars. Built in 1730 by the parish priest Sebastiano Molin, they are dedicated to the Madonna, enriched with beautiful paintings, "the Immaculate Conception", a canvas by Bartolomeo Letterini, "the Assumption", a canvas by Giuseppe Angeli, "the Madonna del Carmine", by Letterini, "Our Lady of Sorrows with the Sacred Heart of Jesus", by...

Si entra in San Canciano con il consueto fare umile e dignitoso e si resta ai piedi della controfacciata qualche attimo per prendere intima coscienza del luogo sacro e poi salutare colui che ti ospita. La facciata settecentesca, semplice ma dignitosa, abbisogna certamente di un pronto restauro. L'interno, tripartito in altrettante navate, è accogliente e predispone al raccoglimento ed alla preghiera. Le decorazioni che impreziosiscono gli altari delle due navate laterali hanno quale tema principale la figura di Nostra Donna o Vergine Maria mentre la imaginifica volta a crociera dà corpo e sostanza alla struttura. Il presbiterio, realizzato dal Massari nel settecento, è opera architettonica di assoluto ingegno e di elegante fattura che si mostra con uno splendido arcone , provvisto di oculo, nel quale rifulge l'altare maggiore sopra il quale si innalza un bel tiburio ottagonale che fornisce luce come le finestre aperte al di sotto della volta. Di grandissimo pregio artistico è la decorazione di una delle due cappelle aperte ai lati del presbiterio, realizzata dallo scultore Moli che vi fece l'urna e la statua di San Massimo vescovo. In controfacciata, ai lati dell'organo, rifulgono le due portelle raffiguranti San Massimo e San Canzuano realizzate dall'esimio seguace di Tiziano, nomato Contarini. Letterini, Zanchi , Zoppo del Vaso, Angeli, Regnier e Celesti sono nomi oggi affatto misconosciuti, ma che nel XVII e nel XVIII secolo erano ricercatissimi in Venezia e, come tali, hanno lasciato in San Canziano il frutto del loro...
