We could not even imagine what a wonderful surprise awaits us by crossing the Ponte del Cavallo. From the bridge the view of Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo is magnificent. In front of us are two magical buildings, the Scuola Grande di San Marco and the Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo. With the square and the surrounding palaces they form a magnificent whole. San Giovanni e Paolo is the main Dominican church in the city, built of brick in the Italian Gothic style. It is not dedicated to the apostles John and Paul, but to the martyrs of the early Christian church of the same name from Rome. The Venetians colloquially call it San Zanipolo. It is one of the larger Venetian churches with the status of a minor basilica and has served as the tomb of Venetian doges since the 15th century, so that a total of 25 were buried in it. The initiator of the construction was Doge Jacopo Tiepolo, whom God allegedly addressed in a dream and told him that this was the place for his preachers. In the early 15th century, numerous Venetian patricians were appointed procurators of Zanipol to ensure completion and decoration. Finally, almost two centuries after the beginning of the works, the church was consecrated on November 14, 1430. The façade is typical of Italian Gothic, vertically divided into three parts with two massive pilasters and a large central rosette, and two smaller ones on both naves. Zanipol houses the works of many famous artists, such as, Giovanni Bellini, Bartolomeo Bon, Piero di Niccolò Lamberti, Giovanni di Martino, Lorenzo Lotto, Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, Veronese (Ascension, Annunciation and Adoration of the Sages on the Ceiling of the Chapel of Rosario and Adoration of the Shepherds also in the Chapel), Bartolomeo Vivarini and many more. An exceptional experience.

The huge brick edifice was designed in the Italian Gothic style, and completed in the 1430s. It is the principal Dominican church of Venice, and as such was built to hold large congregations. It is dedicated to John and Paul, not the Biblical Apostles of the same names, but two obscure martyrs of the Early Christian church in Rome, whose names were recorded in the 4th century but whose legend is of a later date. In 1246, Doge Jacopo Tiepolo donated some swampland to the Dominicans after dreaming of a flock of white doves flying over it. The first church was demolished in 1333, when the current church was begun. It was not completed until 1430. The vast interior contains many funerary monuments and paintings, as well as the Madonna della Pace, a miraculous Byzantine image situated in its own chapel in the south aisle, and a foot of Saint Catherine of Siena, the church's chief relic.

I was trying to find the Vaporetto stop to go to Murano when I found this gem if a church. The florist was decorating for a wedding that morning and the organist was practicing some of the music he was about to play. The scale of this church is absolutely immense and it was filled with sunlight coming in the stained glass windows. This church was built when the Venetian Republic was incredibly wealthy and gave generously to fund the building and decorating of local churches. Centuries later, we walk through the same spaces they did and are in awe of the art and architecture.

Very peaceful and tranquil place to contemplate & admire the place. Lot of history that I didn’t have time to search but was very well explained inside. La Capilla del Rosario was built in 1582 and is the lovely place to relax, reflex, pray and be with God. The entrance was €3.50 and as it’s a bit away from the main part of Venice it’s not crowded A special place to go back again 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
