A Scandal in Japan: My Horrifying Language School Experience Warning: This is an exposé and a stark warning for anyone considering language education in Japan. I'm about to pull back the curtain on the horrifying truths behind the "Alice in Wonderland" facade marketed online. I came to Japan with the hope of learning Japanese and continuing my career. But after 9 months, it's crystal clear this school is nothing short of a fraud and a disgrace. The shock I experienced from day one is beyond words. Educational Catastrophe and Teacher Negligence The quality of education? Sub-zero! Their teaching skills are virtually non-existent. The teachers' attitude? "I'll just lecture and leave." They merely gloss over topics, utterly incapable of providing a genuine learning experience. It's as if we're being rushed to a finish line, cramming so many lessons into three months that you don't truly learn anything. What's more, their so-called "3-month period" actually consists of only 45 days of classes. Everything is a lie and a deception! Did I Come Here to Be a Dishwasher? When enrolling, the sales staff shamelessly tells you to "support yourself for 6 months" because, as an "afternoon class" student, your chances of working are zero! How dare they?! Are they training foreign students to become permanent dishwashers in Japan's food industry while supposedly teaching them Japanese? My profession is Supply Chain Management, and despite explaining my situation to the teachers for 6 months, they deliberately refuse to put me in a morning class. Their only suggestion? To work as a dishwasher after class! I did not come to this country to be a dishwasher! I have a profession, and this school is intentionally preventing me from pursuing my career, actively hindering me! The Epicenter of Indifference and Deceit Classes start at 1:30 PM and end at 4:45 PM every day, and they provide no opportunity for me to do anything related to my profession outside these hours. They don't help with any of our problems. They show not an ounce of goodwill. They brag about having "2000 students" yet are too pathetic to open a morning class. Everything they told us is a lie! The biggest problem is their indifference. No one cares about you or your problems. I have never seen a school so negligent, so utterly callous. I deeply regret choosing this school. This is the worst school I could ever study at. The teachers are irresponsible, they do not explain anything and if you ask something will just treat you like an idiot. They go quickly through the book without explaining any grammar or solving any doubts and will just say you have to study by your self and find your own way if there is anything you do not understand. If you did not understand something, they will say it is your fault and your problem, based on the fact that other students do not have that same doubt or question (some of them do not even care, as simple as that, since they only want to get the student visa). Teachers at this school are also irrespectful. They will discriminate students based on religion and ethnicity, only paying attention to those who are Chinese. If you really want to learn Japanese DO NOT go to this school. It is far too expensive for the bad service and attitude they have. They will chase you and harass you to pay for the next semester ASAP and will treat you like rubbish if you try to communicate any issue about their inexistant methodology or whatsoever. Eğitim Değil, Zaman Geçirme Seansları

İlk haftadan itibaren derslerin içeriği beni şaşkına çevirdi. Beklentim, dil bilgisi odaklı, sistemli ve yoğun bir programdı. Fakat karşılaştığım şey daha çok bir “çalışma grubu” havasındaydı. Öğretmen, sınıfın önünde bir moderatör gibi duruyor, çoğu zaman öğrencilere birbirleriyle konuşmaları için görev veriyor ve kenara çekiliyordu.

Bazı günler öğretmen neredeyse hiç konuşmadan dersi yönetiyordu. Sanki “siz kendi kendinize öğrenin” dercesine bir yaklaşım hakimdi. Bu yöntem belki bazı Asyalı öğrenciler için faydalı olabilir ama Türkçe gibi Japonca’dan tamamen farklı bir dil konuşan öğrenciler için son derece yetersiz kalıyor.

Ders sırasında birbirimize Japonca bir şeyler anlatmaya çalışıyor ama çoğu zaman yanlış bilgilerle birbirimizi daha da çok karıştırıyorduk. Öğretmenin görevi ise yalnızca gülümseyerek dinlemekti. Yanlış yaptığımızda bile düzeltilmiyordu; çünkü amaç “iletişim kurabilmek”ti. Oysa biz henüz temel yapıları bile tam öğrenmemiştik. Sınıf Şartları: Montla Ders Yapılan Bir Eğitim Kurumu Olabilir mi? Öğretmen Değil, Emekli Amcalar Teyzeler

Bir süre sonra dikkatimi çeken başka bir durum daha vardı: öğretmen kadrosu. Japonya gibi bir ülkede, öğretmenlerin ciddi bir eğitimden geçmiş olması, pedagojik formasyona sahip olmaları ve dil öğretimi konusunda uzmanlaşmış olmaları gerektiğini düşünüyordum. Ancak karşılaştığım manzara bambaşkaydı.

Bazı öğretmenlerimiz emekli ofis çalışanlarıydı. Aralarında eski banka memurları, sigorta danışmanları hatta ev hanımları bile vardı. Bu insanlar, belki hayat deneyimi açısından doluydu ama bir sınıfı yönetmek, yabancılara Japonca öğretmek gibi özel bir yetkinlikleri yoktu.

Daha da üzücü olanı, bazı öğretmenlerin bilinçli bir şekilde bazı milletlerden gelen öğrencilere karşı mesafeli, hatta zaman zaman küçümseyici bir tutum sergilemesiydi. Orta Doğu’dan ya da Afrika’dan gelen öğrenciler, sınıfta sessizleştiriliyor, görmezden geliniyor ya da sabırla açıklama beklediklerinde yüz buruşturmalarla karşılaşıyorlardı. Ben de zamanla bu bakışların hedefi oldum. Sorularımı sorduğumda bana öylece bakıyorlardı; cevabı vermek yerine konuyu geçiştiriyorlardı. Yavaş konuşmalarını rica ettiğimde, “biraz daha çalışman gerek” diyerek sorumluluğu tamamen bana yüklüyorlardı. Halbuki biz oraya zaten öğrenmeye gelmiştik. Öğretmenin görevi, öğrencinin seviyesine inebilmekti.ama yapmıyorsan ülkene dön diyen bile oldu. “Kokuyorlar” Demek Ayıp Ama Gerçek Bu konuyu yazarken çok düşündüm, çünkü hassas bir mesele. Fakat samimi ve dürüst olacağım. Ne yazık ki sınıf arkadaşlarımın bir kısmı, özellikle bazı ülkelerden gelen öğrenciler, temel hijyen kurallarına uymuyordu. Sınıf, kapalı bir ortam ve bazen saatlerce aynı havayı solumak.
