Great Day on the Sea - DianiDhow 7th August
We were picked up early and promptly, and as a result, was as promised, one of the first boats on the water before the crowds arrived. The briefing was thorough, and shortly afterward, we were sailing and spotted dolphins after only a short time on the water.
The food was plentiful and delicious, with a generous breakfast and fresh fruit available throughout the day. Drinks were never in short supply, and we appreciated the variety of options, including wine and beer with lunch.
The snorkeling stops were exceptional, located in calm waters with beautiful reefs. During our first snorkeling session, we were fortunate to see dolphins swimming around our group. Although dolphin sightings can't be guaranteed, the crew's excellent communication with other boats maximised our chances.
We traveled with a 74-year-old mother, and while there is a significant step from the transport boat to the main boat and a walk through knee-high water to reach the restaurant on Wasini Island, the crew provided outstanding assistance. While we were snorkeling, they took great care of her and prepared everything for our return. She also said that whilst we were in the water snorkeling, the crew worked very hard preparing for our return, which was clearly visible.
Our two children, ages 10 and 14, participated in a fun dive to 7-8 meters. As experienced divers, we were initially cautious about the safety standards, but the scuba instructor quickly put us at ease with his professionalism. He connected well with our children and ensured their safety while pointing out various marine life, from moray eels and octopuses to spotted rays and a variety of colorful fish.
Lunch on Wasini Island was satisfying, and the optional lobster was a treat. We appreciated the inclusion of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, which many other companies do not offer.
We visited Coral Gardens, but unfortunately, the walkway was closed for repairs, limiting our ability to get close and take pictures. We could only view the gardens from a distance.
The visit to Slave Cave was intriguing, and the transportation to and from our resort was smooth.
The boat itself stood out among the numerous boats we saw, and despite a review mentioning a curtain only for the toilet, we can confirm it actually has a wooden door which has clearlybeen in place for the same time period as the surrounding syructure, though it is basic, it does the job. The boat is well-maintained, but a small solar light in the toilet would be a useful addition.
Photos from the trip were available the same evening via a Dropbox link, and while not professional, the crew member taking the photos did an excellent job capturing memorable moments, including the dolphins and a large lionfish.
Booking with DianiDhow exceeded our expectations. The crew worked tirelessly to ensure a fantastic experience, and despite being slightly more expensive than other options, the added value—such as included drinks, photos, and fewer guest, entrance to Coral Gardensxand Slave Cave justifies the cost. For anyone planning a sailing trip in Kenya, in pur opinion, DianiDhow is a top choice for an...
Read moreDo not trust Steffen.
Firstly we booked this trip early in 2023. We were then informed a couple of weeks before the trip that the prices had increased due to the park fees increasing and Steffen buying a new boat. We reluctantly paid the increased price (in part due to the positive reviews). However once we arrived we realised the park fees had not increased for children (they had actually decreased)… and we certainly did not see the new boat…
… Steffen clearly offers trips on 2 specific boats… but when you arrive after (hour or so transfer) you may be unwittingly assigned to a totally different boat with unusable facilities, and a roof deck which is very unsafe.
The crew did their best and it’s not their fault Steffen is misleading customers. He acknowledged the change of boat but then offered a 15 euro discount (on a 100 euro ppn trip). He said he does not guarantee any boat so beware. He also tried to say it was ok because he didn’t get other complaints… that we were the problem… and we saw dolphins… and looked happy on the photos that the crew took on the boat. What does he want miserable faces all day with my kids and the crew?! No we made the best of some difficult circumstances…
Our only negative experience in 3 weeks travelling in Kenya has been our interaction...

From start to finish, this tour was an unforgettable blend of nature, history, and culture. 🌊
The guides were knowledgeable, patient, and full of enthusiasm which made the experience seamless and enjoyable. Although the weather had its moments of unpredictability, it added a layer of charm and adventure to the day, and didn’t take away from the magic of it all.
Snorkeling was a highlight, offering clear waters and vibrant marine life. Dolphin watching added an extra touch of wonder through fleeting glimpses of these graceful creatures.
The visit to Wasini village was profoundly meaningful. Getting to see the rhythms of the community and knowing that our presence contributed positively to their wellbeing brought a powerful sense of connection.
And the Shimoni caves experience, standing inside those historic chambers, knowing the weight of the stories they carry, was humbling. It offered a real moment of reflection and reminded me of how travel can deepen understanding in unexpected ways.
