My experience diving with Mark, the owner operator of Ocean Tribe Diani, ranged between disappointing and dangerous. I had signed up for an advanced open water course, but received so little instruction the first day that I dropped the course and simply did a few dives for fun the second day. Outside of not teaching the advanced course material, Mark also failed to provide even a basic a refresher to my three friends and I, despite all of us not having dived in years and clearly having forgotten even the basics of diving. Furthermore, two days in a row the small rusty boat with an unreliable engine we dove off of showed up hours late, leading us to have to cancel our afternoon plans the first day. The captain the first day was also quite rude, and based off Mark’s offhand comments it seems as though we were diving at sites we were not even allowed at. A few of the tanks we were provided were low on air, and on one dive Mark went for a deep dive (30m) with less than half a tank himself, something he might be able to do but was clearly dangerous if we needed his assistance in an emergency. What was also a bit crazy is that Mark never had us sign a single bit of paperwork or release forms for the dives.
If you want to dive in Diani I would recommend instead the dive center “Diving the Crab,” where another friend of ours had a fun, in depth introductory course, with beautiful boats, a competent instructor, and lots of little niceties like coffee and snacks...
