Vishandel Centrum — Local services in Amsterdam

Vishandel Centrum has the best haring, and it was evident even the locals agree! During my 4-day stay in Amsterdam, I came here almost everyday (3 days out of 4 because I only came to know about this place on my 2nd day in Amsterdam) for the haring, kibbeling and the smoked eels. I grew up eating a lot of seafood, and eating raw fish was not unappetizing. I enjoyed the slightly firm texture and the savoury flavour. The pickles and chopped onions that come with the fish also work well to cleanse the palate in between the fish slices. The curry-based seasoning for the kibbeling also adds a nice touch and the sauce is also tasty.

Because this is not a sitdown restaurant, there is limited seating available with a couple of small tables outside and a hightop tables inside for customers to stand and eat, but it wasn't a problem for me because I was there for 5-10 minutes only.

There is also a sink for washing your hands!

Excellent place where a lot of locals go to. The staff is friendly and the variety is just huge! There are so many kinds of processed fish (salted, smoked etc), different fish-based spreads and so on. The highlight of this place for me is the kibbeling dish - small pieces of deep fried fish in batter, with a nice sauce. It’s similar to UK style “fish” part of fish and chips except that the fish bits are small and the sauce is good. The price is very reasonable and was around 10 euro for two descent size portions.
