I always love Taupo, always something happening, from 1/2 to full marathons, Ironman, ironwoman, and Maori ironwoman. Markets at the weekends during warmer weather. The "hot spots" in the lake from thermal activity. There are warning signs of scolding thermal activity, which are roped off for a reason. The swimming beach is calm, not patrolled as not a surf beach, so it is better to swim with others. No sharks (of the wild kind), so that's reassuring. The water can be clear, and çooling , but during winter, the snow and ice run off the mountains . A quick refreshing dip or wetsuit if you take a dip. Ideal for children to play on the edges but must always be supervised. Popular for Jet Skis, but must abide by rules and not come close to people swimming. They have their designated areas. Of course, Lake Taupo is known for trout fishing, so this is another attraction. Driveable to the ski fields for the day. There are plenty of nice restaurants and indoor and outdoor dining. Read moreI love swimming in Lake Taupo. From November until the end of March, the water temperature is sitting around 18 - 22* at its peak. The waterfront is very safe as you can stand up comfortably on the sandy bottom 30-40m out from the lake edge, sometimes further. The water is clear, and it's free from boats and other water craft.
