MODU Eatery — Local services in Upper Harbour

We popped into this place after seeing some good Google reviews and because it is close to my son’s daycare. I was a bit nervous when my toddler had a little accident right after we sat down. I was so embarrassed. But the lady working there was incredibly kind and handled it with so much grace. Not even a flicker of judgement. I ended up asking for the food as takeaway, and in the car I told my husband that no matter how it tasted, they were getting a five star review from me based on that experience alone.

But honestly, the food blew us away. Easily one of the best Italian meals we have had in New Zealand. I had the seafood white pasta (had muscles, prawns and squid), my husband had the ragu and my son had the spaghetti bolognese. We also tried the fried chicken with snowy cheese, fries and garlic bread. Everything was spot on. We are already planning to go back tomorrow. The pasta tastes homemade and even my very picky husband said this is a pasta he would happily pay for.

The website makes this place seem like an upscale restaurant, but in reality, you order at the counter. The service was fine—our server was polite and friendly—but the atmosphere doesn't match the fancy vibe the website tries to project.

Now, the food... I can't understand why this place is serving pasta and risotto. The mushroom risotto was absolutely vile. Honestly, I’m wondering if the chef even knows what a risotto is. It was more like a sad rice pudding pretending to be risotto. If you want to make Italian dishes, at least do some research—calling it “mushroom rice pudding” would be more honest. As for the pasta, my friends' dishes were disappointing, and honestly, just call it noodles, because that’s all it was. This isn’t Italian food, it’s a joke. You really need to educate your chef on Italian cuisine, or stop calling your dishes Italian. It’s honestly...

Personally, I recommend the risotto for delivery. I visited with my 3-year-old, and even my child loved the risotto!👍🍝

Without a doubt, this is the best restaurant in Albany, and a choice you won’t regret.
