Lago Azul Spanish School — Local services in San Juan del Sur (Municipio)

We checked into Lago Azul as a family for 3 weeks of Spanish, with our start skills ranging from school intermediate to complete beginner. We loved it and learnt loads. There are a few schools in SJDS, but I think we had the best location, especially at that time of year, the open sided restaurant provided as much breeze and coolness as you were going to find. I had Margarita as my teacher, first with my wife and then after a week with my son (this was our advanced class!) and she was brilliant. My biggest failing was vocabulary, but was able to pick up the grammar and structure well. My son absorbed a great deal. My wife and daughter were with Milady (sp?) and they had a super time too (in order, never spoken a word of Spanish and beginner). The pace was good, refills of coffee and water welcome and we left having not only learnt a great deal of Spanish but also feeling like we had a fantastic introduction to the town and Nicaragua. I'd highly recommend this school and, personally, Margarita. My kids definitely preferred the final half hour of games which they had stretched out to over an hour by the final days. My experience at Lago Azul Language School in San Juan del Sur was absolutely fantastic! I participated in the homestay program for 4.5 months, arriving with minimal Spanish and leaving able to have full conversations about business, travel, friends, and daily life.

My teacher, Margarita, was exceptional, making grammar clear and accessible. For my homestay, I stayed with Marta and her family in my own separate beautiful apartment overlooking the bay. Since Marta and her family didn't speak English everything was in Spanish. It was awesome!

Each day started with a mile swim in the bay, followed by breakfast with Marta and then an immersive Spanish practice. The school's beachfront location added to the charm, with free coffee and engaging lessons. Victor and Jenny ran the program very well, creating a fun and supportive learning environment.

San Juan Del Sur, with its stunning views, vibrant culture, and friendly locals, made the experience unforgettable. The combination of effective language instruction, cultural immersion, and beautiful surroundings made this an ideal place to learn Spanish.

Great school! I've studied Spanish in Antigua, Guatemala; Quito, Ecuador and Panama City, Panama and Lago Azul in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua has been the best. My course was a great mix of conversation, grammar, vocabulary and activities. To top it off, my homestay experience was incredible. I was blessed to be put with a great local family. Even though they knew some English, everything was in Spanish. I experienced local home-cooked cuisine and met some great friends. I was also able to attend a birthday party to get a full experience of the local culture. San Juan del Sur is very safe, calm and peaceful. The owners of the school, Jenny and Victor are very involved in the school operations. I saw them there every day. Before arriving, email communications were quick and understandable.
