Hotel Review: InterContinental Moscow (Post-IHG Era)
Staying at the InterContinental in Moscow was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I’ve had, despite my extensive travel history and familiarity with luxury hotels. I’ve stayed at the St. Regis, Ritz-Carlton, Radisson Royal, Ararat Hyatt, and numerous others in Moscow. Naturally, I decided to give the InterContinental a try for a change. Its five-star rating, prime location, and past association with the IHG network gave me hope that it would meet high standards. Unfortunately, it fell far short.
From the moment we checked in, things went downhill. Our initial room was dirty—windows smudged, used cups and spoons left behind, and an overall lack of cleanliness. Instead of upgrading us or offering an apology, they merely asked us to wait while the room was cleaned—without even the courtesy of proper acknowledgment. This was particularly difficult as I was traveling with my 83-year-old grandmother, and waiting around was far from ideal.
Throughout our week-long stay, service remained consistently poor. Any request—whether for amenities or basic room service—took hours. Considering our long stay, and the fact that I hold status in the IHG network and visit Moscow twice a year, I expected a higher level of recognition and care. Sadly, there was none.
What truly baffled me, however, was an incident at breakfast that left us speechless. While dining, a man who appeared to be the CEO (or a senior manager) approached us—not in a professional manner, but to reprimand my brother for drinking “too much juice.” He went so far as to suggest my brother would get diarrhea. This was during a paid, unlimited breakfast service! The same individual also commented on my grandmother taking several one-time-use spa slippers, shaming her over what can only be described as a trivial matter. The entire interaction was beyond inappropriate, leaving us stunned.
Despite the overwhelming issues, I did encounter one shining exception: Grant, the night shift manager, who was kind and helpful throughout our stay. His professionalism contrasted starkly with the overall disappointing service provided by the hotel.
Ultimately, while the hotel’s location is excellent, the level of service and attitude displayed by its staff are unacceptable for a property of this supposed caliber. I’m sharing this experience because travelers deserve fair warnings about such issues. Unfortunately, until significant changes are made in management and service standards, I cannot recommend this hotel. Stay away—there are far better options in Moscow offering both luxury and respect to...
Read moreI had a reservation for 10 days there, in a lux room which turned out to be a disappointment:
very rude and stubborn staff who repeatedly rejected to keep my Yandex Eats deliveries on the reception for 5 minutes while I am coming down from my room (that’s first time like that in a 5stars hotel!).
rooms renovated long ago, old fashioned, doesn’t feel nice. the finishing is like in my grandma’s elevator in 2000🙈
Pros:
The service here is fantastic, every member of staff I had the pleasure of meeting were very polite. The rooms are in brilliant condition and provide an exceptional nights sleep. Anyone planning on visiting moscow I would definitely recommend for them to stay at this hotel. I look forward to returning in the...
