We celebrated my birthday on Thursday night 25th November 2023. 5 family members. Looking forward to a great meal.Nikita our waitress was very friendly and my daughter-in-law advised that it was my birthday dinner as I was 84. We joked and Nikita joined in and played along. We placed orders after drinks. Taking our time to order as we were really looking forward to a good dinner. Firstly my daghter-in-laws Calamari strips were so badly off that we all smelt it across the table. We though someone maybe ordered a blue cheese sauce. She took a fork full and started to gag immediately. My son had ordered fried Calamari tubes which he tasted and were fine but still he had been put off by his wife's experience. Not a good start to our meals After the Calamari experience we tried to enjoy my birthday supper regardless. My order was a rump steak medium to rare, with the marrow bone, and their very nice chips. The marrow bone was very narrow but the rump was overdone and so full of sinews, it was almost impossible to slice, let alone chew. Eventually my son who was paying said "Mom, send it back," and he motioned for the waiter. I was offered another meal and so I decided on the Belly Pork with crackling, When it arrived my husband plus daughter had finished their steaks. My son and wife had eaten their chicken livers, stating that the sauce was good but livers were overcooked and dry. So they were all waiting for me to finish eating. The crackling was soggy so no chance of eating it, sauce plentiful but not the best and as for belly pork, I can cook better. It seemed more like pork fillet. Dry and tough. We were not impressed as we expected more due to their reputation. Three of us ended off with Chocolate Martinis that were very good. They did not charge for the Calamari that was off nor the Rump steak and marrow bone but in all just apologized. I'm not sure if it was a bad night but feel they have lost a good customer as we will be moving to Sandbaai in January and my son & wife eat out at least 3 times a week. We were really disappointed and my son apologized to me for a birthday supper that was a disgusting experience. Not that it was his fault by any means. His intentions were good.We all agreed that we don't think that we would be eating at that Hussars Grill again and rather eat at another Hussars in future when we are out of town. A Birthday supper totally gone wrong and I just hope my daughter-in-law did not get...
Read moreJust fancied a burger. It was okay. Had a decent patty but the rest of the burger just lacked any excitement. Plain ol roll, a limp piece of lettuce and an almostvripenslice of tomato. A handful of chips sat alongside on this massive plate. Service was great. Will be back for a steak sometime soon. Hope it's better than the burger.
10 months ago and I'm still waiting for that 'discussion' but I'm sure you'll have even more reason to call now...
We came back for date night... Welcome to flight DN-HG 2506... We were warmly welcomed and service was spot on, but damn if everything we ate didn't taste like aeroplane food... ie.. Bland and tasteless... The fried calamari was hot, but crispy? Nope... The chicken livers peri peri were way toi sweet.. And please, rocket has absolutely no place in a peri peri chicken liver. Wife's sirloin was nicely medium rare, but basically cold and that abomination of a deboned chicken should not dished up ever again. Put the bones back in, at least they might add some flavour. Nah man... Nasty. Your mash was a bowl of 'potato' gloop and that pepper sauce that we got with the steak was just a mouthful of uncooked floury glue. Thoroughly disappointing food that were we on a flight would have had the benefit of, well, at least we're going somewhere... Decided to give...
Read moreWe usually enjoyed most the Hussar Grill in Rondebosch, but this is now our new favourite Steakhouse in the Western Cape.
What a heartwarming service by Nandi, who started us of with the complementary homemade chips and olives, which we enjoyed a lot.
Starters were Biltong (great), Garlic Snails (Solid yet the baguette could have been more crunchy and warm) and Springbok Carpaccio (stellar).
As for mains, the burger was great (take the garlic sauce with it), but we were blown away by the Filet Béarnaise (sooo tender) and the Chateubriand (melts in your mouth), which we recommend with the mashed potatoes which were clearly freshly made. Ordered in medium rare, those steaks were a real treat. As for wine pairing we recommend the Alto Rouge Red Blend.
Regarding desert, the death by chocolate (brownie) was great, yet not the best we ever had. The Creme Brûlée whatsoever must have been one of the best if not the best in our history of reviewing restaurants. Absolutely wonderful.
The complementary chocolate liqueurs received as expected were a lovely Finale!
All in all a 4.8 out of 5.0 - well done to the team in Hermanus...
