Beware of misleading practices – we do not recommend this company

We booked a full-day hike in Arusha National Park to Miriakamba Hut (24 km round trip from Momella Gate) and confirmed this plan multiple times with Norbert (the manager/boss?) and our guide. We paid for and expected the day trip permit that allows this hike.

However, when we arrived @ Arusha NP, there were delays of almost an hour at the gates due to “permit issues.” We later discovered that instead of a day trip permit, the company had only purchased the cheaper “long walk” permit, which only allows a shorter 4–5 hour walk. Because of this, our hike was abruptly cut in half. Instead of going to Miriakamba Hut as agreed, we only hiked to the fig tree arch, waterfall, and back (about 12 km in total).

What was most frustrating was the lack of communication. Even as we began hiking, we assumed that there wasn’t any change of plans (going to Miriakamba Hut) as no one told us otherwise. We only learned midway through the hike that this was not happening. Afterward (on our drive back to the hotel), Norbert joined us in the car and excused it as a “new rule” and claimed they “didn’t know they had to pay extra.” But after speaking with other guides from different companies, it’s clear that this distinction between permits is common knowledge in the industry.

We would have been happy with the shorter hike if it had been communicated honestly upfront (at the time of booking). Instead, we felt we were misled, lost time waiting, and did not get the experience we paid for.
