The aim of our trip was basically 'seeing puffins' - my mum is fascinated by them and always wanted to see them up close and had been disappointed by a previous trip years ago elsewhere where we only saw about five of them.
As it was a special occasion, we chartered the boat rather than join an organised tour. This was surprisingly cost effective and if you're a large group considering a boat tour it's always worth looking into. Also beware that as Golden Gate classed our 12 year old as an adult when we took our boat tickets to the National Trust cabin to pay the landing fee we were charged £15 (18+) rather £7.50 (ages 5-17). We did the tour that lands on Inner Farne and had an incredible experience - nothing I say can prepare you for being surrounded by that many birds (especially regarding the noise and smell!). This was only possible because they allowed our dog on the boat and the crew looked after her when we had our hour on the island.
